Audio-Technica Announces ATH-ADX3000 Open-Back Headphones

Audio-Technica has announced their latest open-backed headphones pitched squarely at the discerning audiophile.

The Japanese company says its ATH-ADX3000 Open-Air Dynamic Headphones are "designed to deliver true high-end experience, featuring unparalleled sound quality and comfort".

Audio-Technica says that the open-back design allows unrestricted airflow, producing incredibly pure audio quality with lifelike sound staging and imaging. They are hand-crafted with precision in Audio-Technica's factory in Machida, Japan, using little to no dampening material or acoustic aides.

They feature 58 mm full-range drivers designed and manufactured entirely by its in-house engineers and technicians. The driver uses the same technology as the company's acclaimed flagship ATH-ADX5000 headphones. 'Core Mount Technology' positions the driver's voice coil in the middle of its housing so that the acoustic space is balanced in both the front and the back of the driver.

A single integrated driver unit combines the tungsten-coated diaphragm, pure iron magnetic circuit, voice coil, and aluminium housing. The diaphragm is exceptionally lightweight and responsive, and the pure iron magnet enables exceptional dynamic range and high efficiency, according to the company. This approach creates an ideal structure that offers superb clarity and stereo imaging, with articulate bass, a smooth midrange, and detailed, extended high frequencies.

Audio-Technica lead engineer Hiromichi Ozawa told StereoNET:

Our engineers worked hard to achieve a frequency response that is not easy to obtain by using only natural airflow. Our expertise in driver technology influenced our approach to open-back headphones and enabled us to ensure that the driver diaphragm moves with the purest motion possible.

Weighing only 280 grams, the ATH-ADX3000 is designed for long-wearing comfort and is perfect for long listening sessions. It comes with a detachable 3.0m cable with A2DC connectors and a robust aluminium storage case.

StereoNET is putting the Audio-Technica ATH-ADX3000 through its paces right now, so stay tuned for the full review soon.

Available now, the Audio-Technica ATH-ADX3000 sells for $1,799 RRP in Australia.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
