Dyson Launches New OnTrac Headphones Without Air-Purifying Feature
After launching the interesting Dyson Zone air-purifying headphones last year, the brand is back with its first pair of audio-only headphones in the Dyson OnTrac. Claiming best-in-class active noise cancellation with up to 40dB reduced, eight microphones on the headphones sample external sound 384,000 times a second.
Jake Dyson, Chief Engineer at Dyson told StereoNET:
"Dyson's audio engineering mission is to preserve the integrity of the artist's sound wave, free from interference. We also wanted to create a set of headphones that people would cherish, be excited by, and be proud of. With over 30 years of experience in aeroacoustics, we've mastered sound physics. By reducing noise through in-house anechoic chambers and expert engineers, we've applied and further expanded our audio knowledge to develop the Dyson OnTrac™ headphones. Our first over-ear audio only headphones deliver best-in-class ANC, exceptional sound quality, and all-day comfort through unique materials, design and customisation."
The headphones have a unique customisation feature with swappable outer caps and ear cushions, with CNC Aluminium, Copper, Nickel and Ceramic Cinnabar colourways. The ear cushions are made with high-grade foam for comfort and a soft micro-suede covering. Thanks to Dyson putting the battery in the headband, the weight of the headphones are supposed to be evenly distributed, making for a more comfortable wearing experience.
Inside, 40mm neodymium drivers are tilted at a 13˚ angle towards the ear, with a frequency response from 6hz to 21kHz. In our previous review of the Dyson Zone, we were impressed with the sound quality considering it was Dyson’s first attempt at an audio product. We’re definitely looking forward to seeing how the Dyson OnTrac does.
Other software features include wearing detection, dual beam-forming microphones for voice calls and real-time sound tracking to indicate possibly harmful levels noise levels. All this is available through Dyson’s MyDyson companion app, along with custom EQ modes.
The Dyson OnTrac headphones will be available around August 2024, with a recommended retail price of AU$799.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
