McIntosh’s PS1K Subwoofer Promises Precision, Power & Passion at a Price

The new PS1k powered subwoofer from McIntosh promises 1,000 watts of precise bass for those with deep enough pockets.

McIntosh's newest powered subwoofer, the PS1K, boasts "unmatched bass precision and power" and has been designed for audiophiles and home cinema buffs searching for the sub of their dreams.

Loaded with a pair of 13-inch McIntosh-designed drivers featuring McInotsh's Low Distortion High Performance (LD/HP) Magnetic Circuit, this, says the company, will reduce the PS1K's distortion and improve power handling. Additionally, the multi-layer carbon fibre cones are said to resist flex even at high outputs, resulting in superior clarity and rigidity.

Pushing those woofers along is a brace of 500-watt Class D amplifiers, giving the PS1K a claimed 1000 watts of neighbour-taunting output. However, it's more than just low-end grunt as McIntosh pledges clear, tight bass for music as well as movies.

The new sub is a sealed box design sporting a 1.5-inch thick enclosure baffle that should translate to no port noise or vibration. This is all finished in a high-gloss black with carbon trim, with the PS1K sitting on an aluminium base.

Naturally, you also get McIntosh technologies as standard, such as Power Guard and Sentry Monitor, which will protect the sub from power surges. The PS1K also offers balanced and unbalanced subwoofer connections, adjustable filters, and parametric EQ, enabling it to be fine-tuned to suit individual listening environments and preferences.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
