Up for sale is the FirstWatt F8, one of the latest and most refined designs from Nelson Pass, crafted in his personal laboratory outside of the mainstream Pass Labs production.

This is a solid-state amplifier delivering 25W into 8Ω and 15W into 4Ω. But don't be misled by the numbers—Nelson Pass prioritizes quality over quantity when it comes to power. His philosophy is to make the first watts count, ensuring exceptional musicality and purity. If you typically listen below 90dB, the F8 provides more than enough power, even for moderately sensitive speakers. With high-efficiency speakers, 25W is ample—for example, with my Zu DW6 (95dB sensitivity), I only use about 60% of low gain on my preamp.

I currently own two First Watt amps—the J2 and the F8. While they share similarities, the J2 has a slightly different tonal balance with my setup. So, I’ve decided to let the F8 go to someone who will truly appreciate its exceptional spatial reproduction, pinpoint imaging, deep soundstage, and remarkable transparency.

In terms of competition, the Pass Labs XA25 or INT25 are the closest alternatives. I’ve had the opportunity to audition all three, and while each sounds fantastic, the First Watt F8 has a unique magic—there’s something incredibly engaging and addictive about its presentation. Pair it with the right speakers, and you’ll have a world-class hi-fi system at a reasonable price.
