Finally willing to part with my Quad II Forty. 40W (tube) per channel. It has a sweet sound which I can only replicate with my recently purchase Accuphase mono blocks which are much bigger, heavier and more expensive. Even my McIntosh MC275 does not go as sweet as this pair of Quad. Although the Quad II Forty is one of the most beautiful looking amps (IMHO), with the Accuphase I need to create some space. I pair the Quad IIForty with the big Quad ESL, no issue at all with powering those speakers unless you play really loud or rock and roll. With efficient speakers I don't see any problem for the 40W driving them. I did AB test with the Accuphase monoblocks, with simple acoustic music IMHO it gets to 70-80% of the Accuphase. Vocal is ever so sweet and airy which is hard to compete, the jazz instruments are big and realistic.
It has great potential and one can see the improvement with pre-amp upgrades. The Quad IIForty sounded beautiful with direct feed from PS Audio Directstream and Schitt Freya; nevertheless I have upgraded the pre-amps over the years and I can see the improvement with the Quad IIForty with each step.
Today I did AB testing with 2 pre-amps: Aesthetix Janus which is a very good tube pre-amp vs. Accuphase C2800 which is a much better pre-amp. I could hear a huge difference between the 2 (Accuphase-pre producing a much more 3D, bigger and realistic picture)- showing the QuadIIForty if being fed appropriately can only continue to improve to much higher levels.
Recently I upgraded the 2 pairs of KT88 to Shuguang black (KT88-Z) which will be included in the sale. I have boxes for the amps. In good condition, one of the cages has been scratched at the back (see photo). At one stage I have used the amps without the cages to display their beauty, I left the cages on the floor near the wall. One day when moving my bookshelf speakers unfortunately the stand scratched one cage. Only the paint came off, the cage is still in normal shape and fully functioning. It can only be seen if you look from the back of the amp.
