The KEF Cantata was a top of the line speaker produced by the British brand, KEF around 1976, recognisable due to drive units such as the ‘racetrack’ aluminium-reinforced polystyrene bass driver, which were featured in other well known brands’ speaker line ups.
To preserve symmetry in stereo reproduction the two midrange and high frequency units are mounted off centre in mirrored pairs, and the tweeter is positioned below the midrange in order to prevent detrimental lobing.
Construction is extremely solid, with thick panels, bituminous lining and internal bracing.
Crossover is a third-order Butterworth filter response with 18 dBI octave cut-off slope.
The original speakers had been painted black, so this was stripped off, the grain filled and finished with Polyx oil, which provides a satin sheen but also a degree of durability and water resistance.
The front baffle and rear panel were sanded back then two-pack epoxy filler was used to flatten and smooth the surfaces. They were then were finished with ‘rubbed brass’ metallic finish.
The bass drivers were taped up and finished with the same paint.
New grills were fabricated and installed with magnets to snap onto the baffles, with premium SoundLabs charcoal cloth covering.
All capacitors have been upgraded from electrolytic to Dayton polypropylene, including the hard-to-reach bass circuit.
