Further Information

These Coral coaxials are extremely well built with crystal clear treble and surprisingly rounded bass. The tweeters in particular are things of beauty; 1 inch, edge-wound, former-less voice coil with mylar dome, they even look similar to early Western Electric designs.

  • Sensitivity 96db (parameters of this measurement not stated but presumed db/w/m)
  • Impedance 8 ohms
  • Frequency response 25Hz - 20,000Hz
  • Lowest resonant frequency 25~40Hz

As the drivers are very sensitive you can use low powered tube amps to good effect.

I built these speakers out of 18mm hoop pine plywood based on designs published by the Coral company themselves sometime in the 60's (I believe): 700mm (H) x 490mm (W) x 395mm (D).

I kept the recommended cabinet and port volume but customised everything else including the port dimensions (cylindrical) and driver placement etc. The cabinets rely on rebate joints and glue, the only screws being the ones holding the drivers in place and affixing the bottom panel to the undersides of the cabinets.

Inside the cabinet I used woollen blankets to cover every surface and I hung a sheet from the ceiling of the cabinets to reduce standing waves.

Wiring is Jantzen 16AWG Teflon-insulated multi-strand silver plated copper wire and binding posts are Dayton nickel-plated.

I planted magnets behind the front baffles to snap on the grills, which I covered in a synthetic hessian-style cloth.

I welded thick steel bar stands for them and painted them with a cream coloured metal paint. These stands are 300mm at the highest point.

There are two scratches on the rear baffle of one speaker but not very visible and certainly not at all noticeable during everyday use.

What are the dimensions? Any other technical information like sensitivity?

They look great for DIY.

I just updated the ad to include driver specs and cabinet dimensions.

Thanks for the compliment. Perhaps 'DIY' is not fair. I've built several pairs of loudspeakers using a professional workshop and tools, having built furniture previously and also having restored around 30 pairs of vintage speakers.
