Further Information
I have a pair of Lowther PM6A drivers in simple open baffle frames, which were gifted to me some time ago.
Some in the audio world regard the PM6A as one of the best loudspeaker drivers ever made.
This is a 15 ohm, silver voice coil version. A quick scan says they can be purchased new for around AUD2,500.
One of these gifted drivers arrived requiring driver re-alignment. I sent it to John Stevens the lovely Lowther guru in South Australia who re-aligned it and sent it back to me.
I very much enjoyed listening to this project, the midrange for vocals as good as I have ever heard of any loudspeaker, a beautiful match for a tube amplifier, but never got around to creating a nice bass solution for it. I simply crossed it over with some subs at around 120hz IIRC, which worked fine.
To complete the project you would just need to get the driver repaired, and then use a suitable crossover to a woofer or subwoofer.
I just pulled them out of retirement and it seems the other driver now needs re-alignment. It will need to be shipped to John in SA (I will provide his details), to be re-aligned, and he charges an exceedingly reasonable fee for this service plus return postage.
I won't have space for an OB project in the near future, so for a keen Victorian member of StereoNet interested in making a DIY open baffle project, I am giving these away for free. All I ask if that you make a donation to StereoNet of any amount that makes you feel good about supporting this amazing community we are lucky to be a part of here in Australia.
The open baffle panels are pine, and finished in pure Tung oil, providing for some lovely chatoyancy.
