Hi All,

I'm looking for a cheap screen, 16:9 about 110". I don't want to spend too much as I'm still torn between motorised/pull-down and fixed.....my lounge has advantages for both and I'd just like to run with the motorised option to see how I go. I'd hate to sink large amounts of cash and then have to re-sell at a loss.

I saw the Dinon and Himax @ graysonline:

The Dinon is matt white while the himax is glass bead. I do have a bit of ambient light. With a budget of about $300 for the screen, what would you get?

TIA

It's only $8 shipping for me. I know the screens are not great. Roughly how much would a similar 'good' screen set me back?

Grays also have a 15% buyers premium, so for every $100, add $15.

So do they have a sellers premium as well?

Must admit that anything I've been interested in from Gray's has ended up going for far more than I'd be willing to pay, hence have not once bought anything from them.

I've seen second hand pj's go for close to what's available new (with a little hunting and haggling) and no warranty!

Reminds me of Ebay.

I had a Dinon had ripples in it, sold it and bought a decent motorised Herma Granview 92" was about $850 from Good Guys, is perfect.

Ripples as in from being 'stored' on a roll?

Ripples in roll down screens generally come from the material not being put into the top and or bottom roller/bar evenly, it only needs to be out by a fraction and the effect of ripples is exaggerated on the material itself. There can also be ripples from the screen not being used for extended periods. Leave it rolled up for months (unlikely) and you can get ripples going across the screen.... leave it down for months.. well you might aswell get a proper dedicated screen... :ninja:

Don't confuse herma's screens with the Grandview line, Grandview is just another cheaper chinese screen, probably a little better than the 'dinons' of the world, but none the less a cheaper chinese made screen. They just have the import rights to the Grandview brand, it's not their own product, they simply import them..

Thanks for the information. What are the Selby screen like? I imagine I can at least exchange it if it has ripples....

Are ripples that bad?

My cheap pull-down screen is fairly rippled, in a V pattern from the botom middle where is has sort of come loose from the bar.

The thing is they are noticeable when you stand next to the screen, but from 4m away they are only barely noticeable when reading text, but are not even slightly visible when watching a movie.

If the ripples dont bother you or you dont notice them then leave it at that. If on the other hand you sit there looking for them all through movies because you know they are there and want to catch them out, then that might be an issue.

Is that a recommendation?

Are you saying a dropdown is OK vs a pulldown is not?

ie, Get a quality motorised style.

Just trying to understand the semantics. :)

Just to help clarify, pull down screens put pressure on the bottom bar, (ie "pull") usually translating into stretch patterns in the screen material.

Chain drive or motorised drive doesnt create the same pulling effect on the screen material.

But both are dropdown screens vs a fixed?

true, fixed would be best if you can afford the space for an always "ready to go" screen.

sorry I thought we were discussing "pull"down vs drop down, and the inherent problems associated with these.

Yes you were. I was just asking for clarification.

The only difference I can see is one is a manual "dropdown" and the other is a motorised "dropdown". :D

I agree, the pull downs put strain on the screen which can create ripples, where the motorised make it a smooth controlled operation and I've found its stays nice and flat.

I like many would dearly like a fixed PJ screen, but I need the screen to come down in front of the TV as I don't have a dedicated HT, it also gives me choice TV or PJ.

Same here, I can't really do without the Plasma for daytime viewing. Now I just need a new bracket that brings the TV closer to the wall!

Yeah, daytime viewing in my briteish room is another reason for having a TV too.

Try Selby for thinner wall mount.

Searching for the similar cheap screen as well.

But to my limit budget, I am considering the manual pull down screen instead of motorize one.

I reckon it will be even cheaper.

If there is any one want to sell theirs old one to upgrade a better one, I don't mind if stuff is in a good condition.

Still a student in uni, the the price will be the limit factor for me.

My movie space will be 3 meter from people to screen, so I believe under 100" will be the choice.

Cheers

Do you guys know how those cheap motorized screens on Ebay etc are powered? Does it just have a standard power cord that plus into the wall or what's the deal?
