likwidsh0k Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 (edited) After reading Marc's excellent thread "It's about the music.." thought this question asked on Rockwiz would make a great thread.. 1st album: First album I bought with my own cash was a cassette tape of Hoodoo Gurus - Mars Needs Guitars 1st concert: Tough to remember exactly which one was first, but a standout was The Cult's Electric tour in 1987 at Bombay Rock on the Gold Coast. Awesome concert and just read 'When the world tour wound through Australia, the band wrecked £30,000 worth of equipment, and as a result they could not tour Japan, as no company would rent them new equipment.' caddisgeek Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 First album was also on cassette, "TNT" by AC/DC, I was about ten I think. Concert, well, not really a concert goer per se, more of a sweaty pub gig kind of guy. First gig was the Painters and Dockers at the local pub (the Caledonian) when I was about 15
hired goon Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 G'day, Heh ... we'll have to call you Julia from now on, Mr Shok. Anyway: I popped my concert cherry with Kiss at Lang Park in 1980. The first album I ever bought was either Mike Oldfield - "Tubular Bells" or Kiss - "Destroyer" (I think ... memory is getting a bit hazy in my dotage and a history of substance abuse doesn't help either). Quote ... a standout was The Cult's Electric tour in 1987 at the Bombay Rock on the Gold CoastI saw The Cult at East Leagues Club on the same tour and it was the loudest gig I have ever heard.--Geoff

mondie Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 Great idea for a thread. My first ever music purchase was a tape in 1981 at 11 years old - it was a compilation 1981 Rocks or something similar, l still have it somewhere. Being a country boy concerts were difficult to attend so it wasn't until l was 17 when l went with some mates to see Dire Straits at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. Couldn't see a bloody thing but still enjoyed the experience. Cheers, mondie

Yep, and at the age of 16 I was mighty impressed. We had originally planned to go and see Creedence Clearwater Revival, but then we heard that Led Zeppelin were playing at the same time. I remember that we turned up at Memorial Drive only to find out that the concert had been postponed to the following evening due to rain, so we could have gone to CCR as well, as it turned out. Anyway, turned up again the following evening and the concert went ahead. I can still remember Jimmy Page playing his guitar with a violin bow on Dazed and Confused. Would have loved to have seen Creedence too.

However a friend of my father had one.He was a very fussy music guy wouldnt let anyone touch his stereo equipment let alone some kid. This guy was throwing a birthday party for his daughter and Dad and i were invited.I cunningly hid my copy of 'Machine Head' under the present. Whilst everybody was outside celebrating the girl's lighting of the candles i made my move. I had actually started to press the start button to play when i was busted. Its funny how these days if you drag your kids by the ears and whack thier asses with a leather belt you get in all sorts of trouble...

raptor Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 My first album was Cheap Thrills - Big Brother & The Holding Company My first concert (ignoring pub rock) was probably Jethro Tull at Festival Hall soon after Thick As A Brick was released.
Jake Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 Strangely I havent really thought about this before and I always thought my first album came in the guise of Meatloaf - Bat Out Of Hell. However, now Ive thought about it I am certain it was, like Nude, Explosive Hits 74. First concert....thats a little harder. Im pretty sure it was either Eric Clapton or Stevie Ray Vaughan at Festival Hall, Brisbane. I saw them both around the same period, mid 80's. EC was great but SRV was mindblowing. There was nothing else there in the world like him, and I had never even heard of him until 2 days before! My GF at the time got some tickets and I was just mesmerised. His brother Jimmie and the Fabulous Thunderbirds were the support act. EC's support act was Renee Geyer, and she bloody rocked! Cheers, Jake
Gee Emm Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 1st 7" single; Beatles something or other 1st 7" EP; Beatles something or other 1st LP; Beatles "Please Please Me" I know one of my older brothers 1st album was Chuck Berry "The London Sessions" The other older brothers 1st album was either Deep Purple "Machine Head" or Black Sabbath "Paranoid". Ist concert I went to was one of those Oz rock concerts put on during school holidays at Festival Hall in Melbourne by 3XY (1422 on the AM dial; where "No wrinkleys fly"). I think I was 14, maybe 15. I think (?) my first international act I saw (at Festival hall) was America. It was fantastic!
