The Gales were a more relaxed speaker

My first serious speaker was a pair of Gale 402's from 30 years ago. Relaxed, refined, a gentleman's speaker is the way some reviewer expressed it. But I am surprised people are still talking about them - while 100% for sure its better than some of the junk that is sold as speakers today the state of the art has moved on and many modern speakers are easily better IMHO eg I suspect any reasonably built speaker with modern drivers powered by a DEQX is better.

Thanks

I have auditioned number of Oz made speakers and the one really caught my attention was Whatmough Leadline 201i mid 90s from Ceto (Audio Excellence), purchased on the spot. Subsequently, upgraded to 502i and never looked back. I believe, Oz can make excellent speakers that compete with the so called "best" in the world. :P

Bill , with all due respect you used your 402's with a cheap and cheerful 40 w Proton amp. Perhaps if you used a pair of 402's with source and amplification of commensurate quality your oppinion would have been different.

On the other hand we may just look for different things in the way speakers reproduce music as I have now heard a few pairs of Ml1's , including REF , and they just leave me cold.

The best Australian speakers I have heard (for my way of listening) were the Duntech PCL25's.

As far as Gale 401a's vs NS 1000's they are both great speakers and yes,I agree the 1000's are probably more accurate tonally but the Gales have more true to life dynamics and imaging imho.

Anyone know if Mike Lenehan will be exhibiting his speakers at the Sydney AV show this year?

Zero idea mate. Best to drop him an email to find out. But as a general rule he doesn't exhibit at many shows from my observation - and like many that have visited his factory you soon find out he tends to eschew the traditional marketing model - check out the rant on his web site.

Thanks

Yep , Mario , to my ears a well configured system using Gales creates an image that is more reminiscent of the live expereince than the uber pinpoint rendition that is possible with small monitor style speakers.

As for dynamics , Gales wee on most speakers at many times the price but they need a very grunty amp in order to demonstrate what they can do.

You listened to a chamber orchestra and became the grim reaper?

That's terrible. What were they playing to have caused such a horrific transfiguration?

P.s. sorry for any negative comments towards you I may have made or implied through sarcasm in the past. I have a young family, and am not keen to leave them any time soon!

It must have been some seriously good (or bad) music to result in such a transformation! The last thing I heard (according to His disciples) was that Mario was God...

I agree. No vinyl, tubes, DACS, speakers of any flavour either.

Snapper fillets are going for $23.99/kilo at the Queen Vic market this weekend as well.

Interesting concept. David Suzuki, who is a very keen fisherman, says that he would never torture a fish just for sport, only to eat it.
