weavzy Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Ive just paid for (haven't received yet) an ortofon 2m bronze to replace the 2m red on my pro ject xpression classic turntable. The problem is I have no idea how to change it. Well, i have a vague idea but any advice would be great. Ive searched youtube and there was one or two helpful vids. Anything i should be wary of?? Thanks.
Guest Hensa Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 (edited) The 2M carts are self tapped so there's no fiddling around trying to get the screws into the nuts (strictly audio related!) The 2Ms also have a stylus guard so make sure you have that affixed while mounting the cart to the arm. Otherwise, it's a matter of doing everything gently - particularly removing the tonearm cartridge tags from the 2M red. You need to ensure you grip (I use small needle nose pliers) the tags by the actual tags that are on the pins rather than gripping the wire. If you break the wire from the tag, you'll need to get the soldering iron out. You'll need scales and an alignment protractor to then dial in the right geometry and tracking force. As long as you don't rush and proceed gently, you'll be fine. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Edited November 24, 2015 by Hensa
Newman Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 It always helps to remove the stylus while you mount the body!
cheekyboy Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 It always helps to remove the stylus while you mount the body! Presacery, Newman, if the stylus is removable, which it is on the 2M Bronze. Cheers, Keith
cheekyboy Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 I'm the real cheekyboy around here, hey Yeah, I'm only an amateur by comparison, mate! 3
vedi Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 (edited) I think you are on the right track with some youtube research. When I was starting out I found this video to be a helpful and fairly comprehensive guide (skip to around 5:40 for some cartridge tips): Add $20-$30 for some electronic scales and a turntable protractor off ebay and you are good to go. brownemi Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 From what I understand the bronze and red have the same cart body just the stylus are different. So easiest approach is to remove the red stylus and put the bronze one on. Leave the body and tags alone and achieve the same result without any potential tears.

I understood the Bronze body to be the same construction as the Black while the 2M Red and Blue were compatible. So while the bronze stylus might fit the red body, it would not be the optimum set up for the bronze stylus. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
brownemi Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 Yes worth checking this as I have also read that the red, blue, bronze and black bodies are the same but yes best to check with whom you bought the bronze from
Guest Hensa Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 (edited) Did a quick check on the Ortofon site and the Bronze stylus is listed as interchangeable only with the 2M Black cartridge... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Edited November 25, 2015 by Hensa
Guest Runaway Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 Ah....yes. I remember my first time. Take your time. Have a strong light. A torchlight is useful. Stop often and check. Take safety precaution. Have coffee or herbal whatever helps. Be gentle but firm. But my first time changing a cartridge was a disaster. Sorry, just kidding. If you are unsure, you can do a practice run by completely removing your 2m red and reinstalling it. After doing one, you will definitely be more confident.
blybo Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 If you are anything like me... have a soldering iron at the ready... 2
Citroen Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 Practicing on the Red is a great idea! Wish I'd thought of that the first time I changed a cart Actually, I've only ever broken the tonearm wire tags once, out of hundreds of times swapping/installing carts. (But more broken headshell wires than I would care to remember. I blame old wires, and less care taken, as these are easily replaced cf having to resolder tonearm clips). 1. Take your time 2. Put down a drop cloth just in case one of those tiny cartridge screws goes astray 3. Have one (and no more than one!) glass of wine/beer to calm the nerves. 3. Sellotape/secure the tonearm before attempting removal of cart 4. Put stylus guard on cart, or remove stylus 5. Use a pair of forceps - much better than clumsy fat fingers 6. Once installed, check everything, check again. Then recheck just to make sure. 7. Then pray to the gods of music, Apollo or Minerva?, or to your beloved if you're an atheist, for many years of musical enjoyment. 8. But most of all, revel in the sense of accomplishment! Good luck, you'll need it (jk) 1
weavzy Posted December 4, 2015 Author Posted December 4, 2015 Just letting everyone know i got it on today. No major issues, but i found the headshell screws very hard to get out. Oh,and ive put the lifter bit back on upside down accidentally. Whoops. Sonically the jump is a big one. Sylabence and inner groove distortion are virtually non existent. Thanks for all the advice 1

TOPSHELF Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 If it's a new cart you will love how it sounds next week.
