Old Akai SR-A331 - any comments on quality?

Hi,

 

$10 bought me a pair of Akai SR-A331 speakers which look OK, but sound a little thin until the volume gets wound up a little.

 

At $10 I am not complaining, but can anyone tell me anything about when these came out and where they were pitched at?
