Yamaha RX-V757 or RX-797?
GimmeHiFi replied to evo's topic in AV Receivers, Multi-channel Amps & Processors
I'd go for the HT receiver to leave your options open in the future. I have the RX-v657 and I'm happy with it. -
thanks for the info

I am going back to lifestyle store tomorrow where i got it in about march last year. ROTEL should be able to handle a bit of abuse anyway I reckon. The boss knows me there as I have spent lots of money and he said they'll look after me in the future. Hope they come to the party. I will update as the situtation develops!!

Productive as ever DodgyD Might be under warranty, Something caused it to heat up, It was VERY hot when i pulled it from the rack to inspect. Hotter than the amp normaly gets after watching a DVD. There must a be a reason a PS2 has a fan!! those crazy gamers will play nonstop for 18hrs.

No there not, I'm just trying to look on the positive side. THe plot has thickened, My G/f asked her if she used the DVD player, She said no, I get accused of calling her friend a liar. I reply with well we'll go to the shop and tell them it turned itself on and burn't out. I noticed this morning that the DVD remote was not in its draw, I say thats conclusive eveidense that she played with it yesterday.
-
The amp underneath was off and there was about 50 mm and 19mm of solid pine between it and the player. I am guessing she tried to play a dvd and as she couldn't get it going (my g/f doesn't even know how to work it she just left it going) I have only had it for almost a year, I pulled the top off and it looks OK. Not that I am an expert. Is it worth taking it back to the retailer and trying to make a warrenty claim? As for the guest she refuses to help at all with cooking and cleaning and now this, She aslo broke a can opener today. If she didn't have fake boobs she would be out on her arse. She could at least tell me she tried to use the DVD player but I guess the look on my face was enough to scare her senseless.

I got home today and noticed the dvd player was on, We hae a guest staying and didn't think much of it. I went to put a disk in it opened, closed and the OSD came up with messge "now reading" It just stayed like that, I tried a few more disks and nothing changed it would openand close but not read the disk. I pulled it out and it was piping hot. I think our guest in her wisdom left a disk in there on pause for hours. Bust she won't admit to anything THinking it might have overheated athough I have never heard of this happening to DVD players, i left it for an hour unplugged. Same thing happened. I am really pissed of that our GUEST!! has f##ked my DVD player and won't own up to what she has done. Any Idea what may be wrong and why it would have gotten so hot. Its a Rotel RDV995. Many thanks

akg 240 monitor headphones?
GimmeHiFi replied to pomdomz's topic in Head-Fi, Portable & Desktop Audio, Hearables
True, Bass impact and imaging are not the same. But what can be better for true 2 channel hi fidelity reproduction than awesome headphones, I hear things in good head phones that a $5000 Stereo doesn't reproduce. If you have little care about imaging or "feeling the bass" but want to experience True HiFi then a good set of head phones is a must. And it won't cost you 100k -
I have been given a comp C12 12in Kicker sub (SVC 4ohm), I am in two minds on weather ot put in in the car or use it in the home. Would this driver be suitable to run of a Jay car Sub amp Amp, Is there anyway you can use a Car Amp to drive the Sub of mains power. This means I can have the option of puttting it in the car at a later date if I build the box to suit the car without having to buy two amps. Thanks for the help. http://www.kicker.com/05/05kicker.html

akg 240 monitor headphones?
GimmeHiFi replied to pomdomz's topic in Head-Fi, Portable & Desktop Audio, Hearables
Thats a big project, I have these ones $165 from JB http://www.syntec.com.au/*ws4d-db-query-Qu...ow.ws4d?SNHD515 I would like a pair of active noise canceling closed back for air travel and gaming but you can't have everything. I wonder how those $30k ones sound, probably better than any loudspeaker in the world -

this is what you really want http://www.syntec.com.au/*ws4d-db-query-Qu...how.ws4d?SNHE90 -
surely its possibel to have the best of both worlds in one system, A Krell surrond processor, 3 channel power amp and and 2 monoblocks, when you play cd's just don't turn on the 3 channel for surrounds and center, surely that will sound better than having a dedicated 2 channel Hifi and HT for the same budget, For most (myself included it costs to much to have both and there must be a comprimise) You may be interested to know that IMO my parents Rotel CD player with rotel intergated amp (2x 50wrms) driving B&W DM 601's sounds better than my Yamaha RXV 657 driving DM 600's, The amp is about 15 -18 years old. I like the ablity to experience HT aswell so think the reduction in musical quality is worthwhile. That said DM 601's are, I belive the best speaker under $1000 and I wish I had bought them over the 600's but didn't have the extra $$ at the time,

The Diamond 9.6 FS look good on paper, 3 way, full range, good efficency and would match with the others, I'm not a huge fan of the Dali's IMO they look abit el cheapo. trust your ears. When I have been loooking quiet often a more expensive speaker sounds worse than some cheaper speakers.

Yamaha RX-V557
GimmeHiFi replied to Xstatic's topic in AV Receivers, Multi-channel Amps & Processors
Hello, I have the RXv-657 and can I like it, Just driving 2 B&W 600's at the moment and it sounds good for me, Form the research I did it was worth it to go for the 657 over the 557, I got mine a few months ago from Bing lee for $890. -

GimmeHiFi replied to aka_nsx's topic in Stereo, Home Cinema, Headphones Components
I think he means the Martin logan Sequel II's that are not advertised for sale but in your sig -
Nah, its definately just a crap recording, checked all my cables and everything is in order. Also other Cd's play as normal

I just bought the Neil young Greatest Hits in Cd fro $10, I have been a fan for a while and finaly got around to buying it, got all my favorites such as after the gold rush, heart of gold, old man etc. I think the recording must not have been dig remastered as there is HEAPS of static like interference. The're was a DVD recording also for sale but that was $40 not $10. HAs anyone had the same result from old recodings released on CD. I thought this sort of stuff was of days gone by and eliminitated with a dig recording

I may be interested in the CD player, Any pics? -
Thats slightly more realistic, Haha
-
That is huge!!! I love it, I was thinking about doing something similar but the G/f would never let me have anything that big, What sort of volume would the box need if it was sealed?
-
Thanks Tom The Square metal legs are actually pieces of 40mm square steel piping I bought from a steel supplier who cut them to length, I then spray painted them black, If I build another one in the future I think I will go for stainlesss but that will cost big $$$$. Just waiting for 81cm LCD TV's to reach my Budget and I will be very happy.

I'd prefer to have a $2000 2 channel setup than a $2000 5.1 setup. I wouldn't comprimise SQ for 3 extra crap speakers and a Sub.
