  1. Much cleaner UI It's easier to see where you are up to in the playing queue You can add a play queue item to a playlist (pity you can't bulk select at this point...)
  2. Just installed the update to their app. It's a huge improvement.
  3. Could you take some photos and post them here of the connections you have in place on the back of the Micrex? Perhaps we could see what you actually have plugged in and where.
  4. Although I would normally suggest the Mac, I recommend that you check compatibility with programs and accessories your daughter needs. If you have a family apple store or microsoft account, for some apps you may already have them as part of your subscription and you can save money that way. No need to spend a new MS subscription if your family already has an apple version. As for security this is an interesting situation. In the corporate world Microsoft servers dominate and government regulated security assumes use of Microsoft products (1). Macs are more of a personal computer. Check if the school has any policies regarding security and how that would be implemented/enforced on your daughters computer. (1) For example this site by the Australian Cyber Security department: https://www.cyber.gov.au/resources-business-and-government/essential-cyber-security/essential-eight/essential-eight-maturity-model
  5. Hi fellow NAS users I am considering swapping out my Synology NAS (416-play) with 4xSSD drives for a four bay QNAP The main reason is that the Synology is not playing nice with my M2 MacMini. Example 1 - if I have a keynote file on the NAS and open and edit it, autosave comes up with an error message : This is a pain when I am working on the document. Example 2 - (This is a bit more complex) My music files are on the NAS. When I update the metadata, I use applescript to instruct Music app (new iTunes) to effect the changes. Music app in turn triggers "AMPLIbraryAgent" service which does the actual file writing and management. If Music app is forced to close before AMPLibrary agent is finished then the metadata (including file location) may not be updated, even though the database of Music app has changed. The issue here is that AMPLibraryagent is not syncing correctly with the NAS and it can take up to 2 hours to record changes to 600 tracks! Example 3 - Backing up from the NAS to a USB3 SSD attached to the NAS is horrendously slow. An initial backup of my music files alone takes about 2.5 days! (3.75Tb) Other back ground info: I have 4 macs connecting to the NAS and Roon is running on a Nucleus with it's own internal SSD. Nightly scripts back up NAS files to attached USB drives (rsync protocol) and copies altered music files to the Nucleus. Any feedback would be appreciated in assessing any change.
  6. Firstly turn every thing off and leave them off for a while. Micrex amps carry a far bit of charge after turning off. (Mine continues to play for about 1 1/2 - 2 minutes!) Once cold, remove and replace the valves, cleaning the contacts. Never turn the Micrex on with no valves in it. However the sound you describes might be caused by trying to plug in a turntable. If so, you are out of luck - there is no phono input on this model. You will need a phono pre-amp to go between.
  7. In line with the house image above:
  8. My toilet is fitted with Dolby: It takes the hiss out of the piss and puts the hush into the flush.
  9. A few years ago (before the earthquake), we did road trip around the South Island. Flew into Christchurch, took the train trip across to Greymouth Picked up the hire car from Greymouth ( people often end their hire there so it was cheaper to start the hire at that point). Then just took our time, cruising south - glaziers, then Queenstown, Fjords and back up the east coast to fly out from Christchurch. Motels usually are self contained so it was a lot of fun and not too expensive.
  10. I haven't upgraded the power supply. My system uses an Isotek Aquarius with a dedicated power circuit. It might make an improvement, but my personal preference would be to make sure your DAC is very good. In using the same DAC there is a subtle difference between connecting the Nucleus to the DAC via the NP5 (with wired network cable) and connecting directly using USB. The USB is just a little darker and less dynamic, but only after careful listening. I'm sure the NP5 does contribute a little here. The other issue is what type of software will you use to drive it? Roon works very well in this regard. The native Primare app is okay but not in the same league as Roon. The Primare app does have the advantage of connecting via chromecast and the apple equivalent so your input options increases. Hope this helps
  11. I'm using a NP5, primarily because it integrates with my Primare Pre60 (pre-amp with built in DAC). It is a nice, unobtrusive, reliable device which integrates with Roon, including the ability to alter the volume of the pre-amp itself. The actual sound quality is dependent on which DAC you feed with it. There are various output sampling rate options to suit and other settings I don't bother with.
  12. Whoops wrong model (600 not 160), but still recommended.
  13. And a bit of nostalgia from the 1970's
  14. Another option is your local tile shop - they sometimes have sample pieces from discontinued lines. All I had to pay was a cutting fee and I had 4 reasonably matching pieces for my system.
  15. #Heardle #72 ️️️️️️ https://heardle.co Yep! Proud to state that I didn't know that one.
  16. Also just check it's not a video of a Celine Dion Concert...
  17. Some very worthy listing here oh, minimal equipment! - my bad!
  18. I run a Roon Nucleus with iMac and iPads as clients. Music is stored on a NAS I occasionally get this and it seems to be between the Nucleus and my endpoint. Switching them off (and the hub in between) for a few minutes seems to resolve this. A few housekeeping things you could do: In Roon Settings: Force rescan Clean up Library Advanced actions in Roon Settings Clear Cache (Settings - Setup - Clear Image cache) On client computer Clear Roon Preferences (~Library / Roon, for mac OS) Hope this helps
  19. Thanks for this list - a genre I do enjoy The criterion is books rather than short stories, otherwise I would have picked "Nightfall" by Isaac Asimov to be up there. Oddly the linked site now has a different order: 1 Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley 2 Dune, by Frank Herbert 3 The Martian Chronicles, by Ray Bradbury 4 The Fifth Season, by N.K. Jemisin 5 Kindred, by Octavia Butler 6 The Left Hand of Darkness, by Ursula K. 20. Other areas didn't do so well There is no petrol stations with fuel, milk is in short supply, no mobile phone coverage, most stores are shut. Level 4 water restrictions - water supply is restricted to water in the reservoirs only
  21. I'm based just outside of Murwillumbah. We have had power outage from Monday 2am until Tuesday (today) 11:00am. The mobile phone towers are also affected with no internet access either. For the first time since 1974, water has come into the CBD but stopped in time for any serious flooding. Areas outside the CBD are seriously affected though. This is inside the CBD which shows how close it came to retail shops (in 1974 the flood water was 2.4m deep in the Church building).
  22. And here I am in my man cave wondering what decided to sleep on my acoustic panels: And on closer inspection, I have a batman cave
  23. Yep - that's a Windows update for ya!
