achjimmy replied to JPete9's topic in General Hi-Fi & Beginners Discussion
Great thread, just returned from Japan. Didn't look around much as only had Thursday afternoon and being such a great day I spent it in the imperial palace gardens cause there awesome. Interesting on the news on Wednesday night they are having a lot of trouble with some Chinese tourist groups with people disappearing whilst visiting basically skipping their visa? -

Thanks again everybody. So the history my dad bought this in the mid 70's I thought new but it may have been a trade too? It's pretty much original except for the CEC headshell and somebody has put rca terminals to the rear without an earth point! I have since earthed it but it's not right through . There's definetly something interfering in the arm /connector. I have purchased the ortofon headshell cause it came with bolts and leads. I have a spare M 95 ED cart as well so will set that up with a new stylus. I am going to rewire the tonearm and put new RCA leads through the back (with earth) try and get the strobe light going (globe is faint) oil the motor then use it again. My preamp is a rotel 990 with ability to do MM or MC It's a little bit labour of love because it was dads and I used to love playing with it as a kid and being told "to be careful" might lare it up a bit with a technics skip mat lol -

Thanks all. currently in Japan and going to pick up some wires this afternoon. The only headshell they had was the ortofon 4 which looks nice but I don't think it will be as good as my CEC as its a cast shell although if the plug is dodgy. Million needles to choose from. Might weight and go to another store in Tokyo. -

I have revived my dads old technics sl1500. It sounds overall great but there's a mild hum? I have done the weights and tracking. The wires on the cartridge are shocking and the screws look Suss! So was going to get some new wires and screws (ebay) The cartridge is an original 70s shure M95ED it never got played a lot . I have a spare too. The head shell is a CEC and looks to be cast alloy. I have attached a few photos. I like to go over it and check the wiring in the arm too. But next week I will be in Japan and just wondering if it's worth picking up a new cart for it up there? One of the denons? Are they cheaper in Japan and what would be a suitable cart for the technics 1500

Yamaha Bd-S677 Region Free Dvd Codes?
achjimmy replied to achjimmy's topic in Media Servers & Source Units
Yeah thanks mate. This is a stop gap waiting to see were uhd goes. Don't really want to spend much dosh on it. I have two other MR DVD players and no OS BRs so will probably just slot a DVD player in for the few discs I have less than 10 I suspect. It's just plain stupid though why have manufacters gone back to locking DVD players a decade on? -
Picked up a BD-S677 player from Corza which is all good. But I was told by a retailer that they can be made region free for DVD by a remote code? Ofcourse not buying of them they are not going to be forthcoming. Not interested in multi region BR just DVD as I have a few discs Does anybody no the procedure ?

Suprisingly Surface mount electronics arent made on a robotic line or in the true sense of the word. Automation in electronics is nothing like the level of automation in general manufacturing. Most "surface mount lines" best called as SMT lines are staffed at the very best by one person per two lines but invariably person per line. The reels of components and blank PCBs must all be stacked on to a machine manually as they empty out. Yes everybody likes to show a video of the "Mounter" screaming away placing components , but they dont show somebody managing all the tape reels loading the boards and filling the solder paste on the screen printer. Not to mention managing and inspecting the boards as they come thru. Even with what's called "automated optical inspection " AOI there is a high level of management required. Further more this equipment requires a much higher level of operator and training than your normal "process worker" and as such Chinese manufacturers can't afford for them to switch out jobs regularly which is the bane of manufacturing in China (keeping staff) The final thing that usually advantages the Chinese manufacturer is the cost of the actual components. They source them unbleviably cheaper I can tell you of a few local large scale manufacters who have either abandoned their low cost products or one who out sourced all their electronics SMT production because they could get the whole board manufactured and supplied for what they were paying for components alone! And these are large wealthy companies with buying power. I guess the other drive for some hi Fi manufactures to make in China is there own domestic market? It's huge for this gear, those that have been will have seen the stores and the level of equipment being offered. In downtown Shenzen in one street there was three stores offering nothing less than B&W 8 series as a minuim. Sorry OT
-
China is no longer the dirt cheap manufacturing country it once was. That's moved to other Asian countries. Especially if you have a well controlled facility producing quality gear. You need to pay more agin to keep staff. Further more any hifi manufacturer the world over doing any sort of volume manufacturing will be getting there internal electronics (SMT PCBs) most likley made in China by a subcontractor.

I don't know Trevor. I could find out but all seems good. The repairer is a very experienced electronics engineer -

achjimmy replied to achjimmy's topic in Power, Cables & Electronics
The rail and everything else was checked. The sub was popping intermedialty started strait after a storm and lightening. Also lost other gear. Perhaps it was close to age/failing and the storm took it out? No idea above my pay grade -

achjimmy replied to achjimmy's topic in Power, Cables & Electronics
Closing this I still didn't find any caps. It was the smaller caps that the surge had taken out. My repairer checked the big ones and all seems okay for now. I will keep looking and try and source some replacements for later on. For now though it's back together and last night on spectre I thought it sounded more beefier than ever! Maybe it was just I went through and set everything up again?
