  1. Rollins, still being misquoted even on bulletin boards, lol. Read the rest of the article and give the comment some prospective.
  2. Really depends on how much of a cheapskate someone is being during production. Once upon a time you used to have a vinyl and a cd mix, sometimes even different producers/engineers worked on each one because you go about each master quite differently, but it really is becoming common now to have both made from the same original master. Sometimes you get a little bit of tweaking for each product, but the problem you run into is if the master is terrible to begin with, doesnt matter what medium you use its still going to sound rubbish. Massive recent example in the metal community is metallica - death magnetic. Wow, so much clipping, its quite pathetic, but the vinyl isnt really any better to suggest it came from a different, original master. Yeah, the mid range isnt scooped as much as it was, so you get a little better definition through the vinyl edition, but its still bricked in all the same places, not even worth considering. I hate remastering on both mediums too, ive got some records that are nearly 30 years old, compare them to a new reissue and they are much louder and so much has been lost in the remastering. Yeah, they give you a fuller sound, but why did it have to be about albums being so loud all the time? Thats the point of an amplifier, if its not loud enough, I can just turn up the volume, I dont want someone to tell me how loud it should be and ruin the record in the process.
  3. Had something rare turn up like that a couple of months ago, refunded from insurance as you could see it had something heavy leaning against it rather than being sat flat, but the problem is trying to replace something that is hard to find, especially if you got a good deal. Need an extra $150 to replace it now when they pop up from time to time.
  4. Was just thinking about this today too. Recovered my old turntables (technics SL-B2 and Dual CS415/2) from my mothers place last month, ordered some replacement parts from the US that arrived this week and I suddenly realised my HT amp doesnt have a phonostage. Went back to my mothers and dug out my marantz 1070 receiver and was looking at the outputs on the back, would you guess? phono in and preout. Im still looking around to put together a 2ch setup, but I must admit, Im getting excited about hearing some old records again and I dont think I can stand to wait any longer so I was thinking about doing the same as the OP. Guess it solves my question too
  5. and you quoted my post... because?
  6. you can pick them up for under $160. Its got to be a software thing though, so it is a real twin tuner. I put one (along with a 500gb hard drive) into a friends ps3, you set something to record then can still watch and pause live tv, so it appears the functionality is already there.
  7. Definately cant. tried everywhere, "sale" price on these now is $1789. Cheapest anyone would do was $1650. Ive noticed the price on pretty much all tv's has gone up 10-12% this month. Good guys wanted to know where the price was listed under $1500 because its not in any catalogs they know of still current. Regardless I tried a couple of stores and nobody was willing to sell them even close to $1500 this week. Pretty much all the good deals everyone got last month have vanished and sticker prices have gone up a huge amount, doesnt matter who it is, JB, GG, Clive anthony, etc, all have put their prices up. Edit: Here, compare these sticker prices to last month. KDL40W5500 JB Hi fi - $1893 GG - $1789 Harvey Norman - $2199 Bing Lee - $1999 DSE - $2497 Videopro - $1797 People are willing to do deals to clear stock, but from walking around its pretty apparent the stock they want to "clear" is actually stock they have bulked up for the christmas/boxing day lead up. Wouldnt be surprised if the prices have gone up so they can come back down for the "sales" after christmas
  8. Just looking for a tv to replace the KE series bravia in the lounge room, did a bit of calling around and the 40" V series bravia (KDL40V5500) can be had for $1250. Not a huge saving when you compare it to the deals going previously, but compared to what its now being sold at other retailers, its a good $200 off. Videopro have them listed at $1296 so you can use it as room to haggle with other retailers who seem to be willing to come to the party.
  9. still a cabinet. We have been doing renovations lately, currently in the kitchen so have been doing some shopping. I found these really heavy duty sliding (and locking) runners for a pull out shelf or partition. They lock in place at either end and take a bit of force to pop them out, make quite a considerable *thunk* at either end which got me quite excited. Im thinking ill use them in my cabinet, atleast for major components like the receiver, power amp, htpc and conditioner, should make it easier to get to cabling when the whole shelf can be moved forward. Good thing about them is I reckon I can make up an alloy frame to sit inside the runners, allowing you to drop a shelf inside to sit your components on. Could put pretty much anything in there you wanted, stone, glass, dense wood, composites. I want to get the kitchen finished quickly in order to start making the cabinet
  10. blue lights have been a pretty common thing with them. My dvd player does it when it has a hdmi connection.
  11. Look a lot like the ones ikea sell (but cheaper). I got these a couple years ago to sort out some stuff. I really like the 4 sided ones ive seen on ebay, they open up with racks on the inside, helps hide everything. Going to have to sort out something soon as ive run out of dvd/cd space.
  12. i can vouch for the drinking in NZ. Averaged about 4 hours sleep a night over 2 weeks while the rest was spent drinking, traveling to a place to drink, or eating something to allow more drinking.
  13. put in my preorder for Iron Maiden - Flight 666 on bluray. Only 2 days to go before iron maiden madness arrives.
  14. nice bokeh on the shot of your niece johna, the lions look like they are eyeing you off for a meal though
  15. 170mm of rain in a bit over 24hrs, so I did bugger all but sat around drinking bourbons, playing pool and listening to vintage heavy metal.
  16. Just a note, unless they meet certain seller requirements (feedback score, time registered, etc), paypal holds the funds for 21 days or until feedback is left. So this means its much easier for paypal to reverse the transaction and give your funds back. From memory, its something like you needing to be a verified member for more than 6 months, have a feedback of atleast 100, a low buyer dissatisfaction rating and a couple other things. So basically, unless they are pretty regular users/sellers, most people wont meet the above, meaning the funds will be frozen. When dealing with paypal make it clear that it never worked properly from the day you got it, dont say you suspected something was wrong, it might not have worked properly, etc, just be clear and to the point. Goodluck.
  17. Its all an elaborate rouse, its really a man under there. It was the 80's, the earing and the lipstick just throw you off the scent so to speak
  18. drill press, plasma cutter, welder, check. Hope to add a tig welder to the mix soon, alloy, sand filled rack perhaps?
  19. DSE have a similar soldering station for $99.95, I got mine for under $70 when it was on special a month ago. http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/4a08e75e0637f106273fc0a87e0105ed/Product/View/T2200
  20. Buy/build a new cabinet to store everything in. At the moment stuff is all over the place
  21. They only vent through the top (no vents on the sides), the fets run pretty much right across the middle of the unit with the transformer sitting in the middle, so a lot of heat is located towards the front of the unit. Even with the fan id probably be trying to make a little extra space in that shelf, can you drop it down in the unit? even if it means cutting through the sides to remove the shelf? mdf is pretty easy to work with. I guess a fan is going to be better than nothing. The SR7002 ive got surprised me with just how hot the thing runs even when its not driving anything, pumps out a huge amount of heat, even with an open cabinet and a good couple inches clearence. I was playing around with some hdmi connections the other day, never realised just how hot it got.
  22. As said, switching provides the ability to switch between sources so you can connect dvd players, stb, etc to it while using a single hdmi input tvs usually have. Switching and pass through essentially do the same thing and quite often you'll find them used together which can make it confusing too. The audio side of things in relation to hdmi is pass through. Pass through pretty much just passes on the signal to the target without any real processing, they dont do audio. Its largely due to the rights management and the big song and dance routine drm holders performed when they realised hdmi could make it easier to bypass copy protection. In order to utilise audio, you really need to look at hdmi repeating too which will give you full audio over hdmi too, need to spend a few hundred more to start to get into repeating. Its not that big a deal really if you have optical outputs, so you'll be fine. However, if you are looking at it from an upgrading standpoint to incorporate everything into a home theater receiver, might be an idea to save a little more money and have a look around for units that do hdmi repeating. Hdmi 1.3 is the latest current standard, it will give you support for lossless audio like dolby HD, so if you have bluray sources and want to take advantage of audio and video together, this is what you want to look for. It will largely future proof your receiver and provides room for future technology updates that wont see you having to replace it in 12 months time.
  23. thanks, these are still made in canada, the alpha's (although rated very highly for the money) are part of their entry line, not the image, so there is a bit of a difference between them. Id rather pay alittle extra now when im able to and buy up a little higher, the extra gives you better midrange, more bass definition and generally something that copes a little more with heavier music and louder operation. But of course, they cost more I had a look on APG's website but they dont have anything about psb listed, so ill have to give them a call.
  24. thanks, but ive already got floor standers, im after a pair of bookshelf speakers to complete the set and looking for better quality, dse speakers dont really interest me im affraid.
