NAS recommendation
markeroonie replied to goooobags's topic in Digital Sources, DACs, and Computer Audio
Ok, i bought it, installed a total of 8GB of ram and a 2TB HD, it's booting up from a usb using ubuntu/linux, but that is where i am now stuck. when it boots up it asked what language, then asked if i want to install or just try/test. when i choose try/test, the home screen comes up and that is as far as i have gotten. how do i add or edit the boot up procedure, also how to i download/install squeezebox onto the usb. i also cant see if the 2TB drive is there, nor how to set it up so i can access it via the home network stupid me, stupid linux -
NAS recommendation
markeroonie replied to goooobags's topic in Digital Sources, DACs, and Computer Audio
rather than start a new thread I thought i might as well tack my questions here to keep it all together. This is my first nas so apologies in advance is they have been asked already, I had a look around but couldn't find anything that seemed to answer my questions I have just bought a n40l from shoppingexpress since they were running them out on special yesterday, only $199. it has a 1.5Ghz processor, 2GB ram and a 250GB SATA HD already installed. What I want to do with it... Run Squeezebox music server, i have about 140GB of music, almost all FLAC, this would (as it currently does from my laptop) stream to a squeezebox Touch via the wifi back up two laptops via the wifi, probably using Crashplan, currently about 200GB Watch movies etc, perhaps streaming to my PS3 via wifi. Don't have many digitised at the moment, but do have about 100 dvd's that could go onto the NAS Perhaps use it to download torrents, that currently gets done on my laptop, using µTorrent leave on 24/7 Questions... what operating software to run. FreeNAS and nas4free I have seen mentioned a few times. another is linux, something i have had no experience with. I am after something that is as user friendly as possible, am happy to pay up to about $50 if needed. Is 2GB of ram going to be enough? i understand it can take up to 8 or even 16GB will the 250GB HD be ok to leave in to run the various software i want to use, or should i consider a solid state HD or run everything on the bigger HD I have to get anyway for the backup and storage purposes. i have also seen some comments that suggest using a usb stick to hold the operating system on, though not sure where this would go , inside or outside. I am thinking of just getting one 2TB WD Red Caviar since this is primarily a backup for the laptops as well as to stream music. I will also have another off site backup, I figure that makes three versions of my data, two always up to date and the external one being done every few weeks. i also have a lot of doc backups being saved in dropbox if i feel the need to have a RAID 1 setup then it will be fairly simple to drop in another drive how secure is this setup, if i give someone access to my wifi, like a house guest, will they be able to see and tinker with the content on the NAS thanks in advance for any advice mark -

Squeezebox touch issues
markeroonie replied to markeroonie's topic in Digital Sources, DACs, and Computer Audio
the usb hdd is mains powered. it has some 6000 files on it, mostly music with sleeve images for the albums, so that is under the 10000 file limit suggested by logitech there is about 130 gig of music, on a 500 gig drive -
Well, mostly just the one issue, the Touch keeps losing contact with the usb external hard drive, giving me the message it can't find connect to the usb. I have tried leaving the hard drive on all the time, ejecting it prior to turning off the touch, leaving both on, all with the same result. When it works it is fantastic, but this has been frustrating me for over a year, though obviously not enough to actually do anything thus far The only thing i have tried is to change the USB cable, with not apparent difference. the hard drive has about 130gig of flac files, i have reset and tidied up the meta tags, i have also defragged the drive and deleted the squeezebox files and started over. would a solid state hard drive make a difference?

Not sure how long this deal will last, but Logitech are selling a lot of stuff on ebay at rock bottom prices. http://shop.ebay.com.au/logitech_australia/m.html?_trksid=p4340.l2562 Logitech Harmony 1100i + PS3 adapter - $230 - ($195 without the PS3 adapter) Logitech Harmony 900 + PS3 adapter - $320 ($285 without the PS3 adapter) Logitech Harmony - $129 Not sure how I would feel if I were a reseller, (the 1100i and 900 go for around $600) but as a buyer, bring it on! Ps, I bought the 900 with PS3 adapter since the blaster ir/rf feature seems handy

Grrrr, update, screen now has a vertical line of dead pixels, almost dead center. Samsung will send someone out in the next few days and hopefully will fix it within a week. Happy update, got the Topfield TRF7160, nice pic and easier to use than the old one...and that was pretty easy to use. Now have just 3 x hdmi cables connecting 4 componants, instead of ????????? Almost takes the fun out of it LOL -

5.1 and beyond......?
markeroonie replied to Bus_Boy's topic in AV Receivers, Multi-channel Amps & Processors
Interesting, I had a look at the list, and find it hard to believe that a lot of those releases were ever 7.1 in the first place, old movies, tv shows etc Perhaps it's a little like adding colour to B+W movies, or adding 3D after filming has finished. It's possible, but why would you bother -

Friday update... Watched RED, with Bruce Willis and a stellar cast, BluRay disk, absobloodylutley fantastic. Then thought I should give the PS3 a spin as a gamer, so fired up Call of Duty - Black Ops. first up it wanted to download an update, fair enough, then WTF, the screen is all blurry! Oh, whats that at the corner of the screen, a message for me to turn on my 3D glasses. I didnt even know that the game was 3D! It works fairly well, though the weight of the Samsung glasses, plus my glasses, started to gt a bit heavy after a little while, so am not sure if it's something I will use too much. -

mid morning update... been playing around with a usb stick, have some mps's in one folder, and some flac albums in another, and they all are recognised and playing! I know it was possible, but seeing and hearing it in action is awesme. Next to see if a usb hdd (with no power supply) works as well, since i have about 80gig of flac music waiting to get played now the CD's are packed away -

Sunday update. Yesterday it was one of the easier hookups I have ever done, and just about everything worked first time. The auto speaker setup with the mic worked a treat, and looked about the same settings as I have used in the past. Watched Mama Mia and some of Alexander (DVD'S), interesting that Alexander had a mucher biger lipsync problem, but easily fixed. Audio and vision on both were great. Next to get hold of some Blu-Ray discs -

Once in a decade upgrade?

finally got it up and running, also managed to mount it on the wall. used my reference dvd to set up the picture settings, and bugger me, they were about spot on out of the box. have an audio delay via the stb and ps3, cant fix that till i get the new amp picture quality is lovely, even the standard def from my topfield via componant looks amazing, can't wait to get a blu-ray disk, however don't have the ps3 audio set up for digital yet, once again, will wait till i get the new amp, i only want to pull everything out and rewire the once haven't tried the 3d, what wasn't really why i got it, so will have to wait for a while to report back. am now on the hunt for the yamaha rx-v 1067 (for around $1200), that will have hdmi etc and audio lag settings afaik. -

Yup, all my cd's are now flacs haven't really gone down the HTPC path, but could stream from my laptop direct to the yamaha as far as i can tell. this is what yamaha say... with the screen, the ps3 and the amp all being networked, it's just a case of which way i go, i think.the amp will take wav and mp3 straight from a usb too -

Thanks guys. Thus far, I have decided to get a 50" 3d Samsung since Bing Lee are running them out at $1200 A friend is taking the old 42" off my hands for $300 Next, as soon as funds permit, it will be a Yamaha RX-V1067 to go to work as a pre-amp, also about $1200. It appears that the RX-V is almost identical to the RX-A1000 I agree, the arcam will be next to go, since i have digitised all my cd's so no longer need a player, and the PS3 might as well stay for dvd's and blue ray. Any suggestions on what it might be worth? I have the PlayTV option on the PS3, but it sucks, can't record more than one channel at a time, and I have had all sort of dropout and freezing issues, whereas the Topfield has been perfect for the past 5 years or so. It's only drawback is that it isn't hi-def. I can get a 500gig toppy for around $450 with quad tuning (however that works, given it only has 2 tuners) Will compare the tuner with that in the receiver, I mostly listen to FBI these days, so not sure how much difference it will make, I also like the idea of reducing the number of componants in the system. Never watch tv in the bedroom, thats for sleep and you know what -
Decisions, decisions. What to do? From the start, the easy and cheap option is to do nothing, and wait till something gives up the ghost, and perhaps just replace stuff incrimentally. However that also means that there will be no resale value to be offset against buying new stuff. Anyway, here is what I have and am thinking of changing... 42" Hitachi HD plasma monitor, 7+ years old, still going strong but the fan is pretty noisy - thinking about replacing with a 50" Samsung Rotel RSP-976 pre-amp. Works fine but it annoys me that there is no onscreen display when in componant mode, Thinking about replacing this with a Yamaha receiver, perhaps the base model Advange this would be used as a pre-amp. PS3 - currently being used mostly as a blu-ray player and HD tuner, could sell and replace with dedicated $300ish BR player Topfield TF5000PVRt - working fine but only standard def, thinking about replacing it with the new Topfield quad HiDef tuner with 1 terabyte HD Tuner - Denon TU255. Works fine but could sell since the Yamaha will have a tuner inbuilt. Arcam DV88 - working fine, doesn't get used much anymore, and if replaced with bluray player, cold move on to a new home This is what I have and intend to keep... 3 x ME power-amps driving 5 speakers B&W speakers, CM4, CM2 and Cm center KEF sub So there we have it, I figure replacing the screen, PVR and pre-amp might cost around $3k. I might be able to recoup up to $1k if I sell the screen, dvd player, PVR, tuner, pre-amp and PS3 comments, thoughts, suggestions? thanks in advance

as i said, i am happy with it so far, but agree that it is a compromise. the one mustard has got does do a wicked sharp edge, but the anolon is easy for occasional use.

only just read this so am a bit late to the party... a friend has one of the sharpeners that Mustud just got, and he too swears by them, along with a bunch of his farming/hunting mates - they bought a job lot of em i currently use this http://www.anolon.com/cs/Satellite/mArticle/1177513656321/anolon/1177513657047/Page/ShapeName/Sharpeners/en_US/FullPage.htm it did pretty well in a choice test of non electric sharpeners, and so far i am pretty happy with it.
