Jone5y replied to StereoNET's topic in Speakers, Soundbars and Subwoofers
Alrighty, early impressions Shipping: Faultless. Speakers arrived in custom CNC ply boxes and wrapped in protective material. One of mine had copped rough enough handling to have fully punctured the box, yet the contents were unscathed. All cables neatly positioned at the top of the boxes. Install: Simple. Connect sources to right speaker, use supplied cable to connect right speaker to left, connect both to power. Turn on left speaker, then right and away you go. They autodetect incoming signals and auto switch between sources accordingly. This makes them very family friendly and simple to incorporate into a HT system. One thing to keep in mind is that, due to their high sensitivity, care must be taken when switching to a CD source to not have excessive volume. Sound: Bass: Prodigious and fast. 15" woofers help here. As mentioned to Ross, i noticed an increase in bass quality and quantity after about 10 days of normal listening. That may have come from more confidence in upping the volume or something else, but i recall a distinct day where i could tell they sounded different to the day before. Using a phone app, most music i listen to bottoms out around the 35Hz mark, the minis handle this easily. I know they do it 'easily' because the amps provided a warning light if they are getting close to overloading and cut out if that limit is exceeded. This is yet to occur for music, but has a handful of times in some war movies. Mids: i think this is where they are at their strongest. They hit hard on drum tracks (almost anything from Def Leppard, Stumblin by powderfinger a lot of metallica etc) and have a real 'get up and dance' energy to 90's/00's RnB classics that simply puts a smile on your face. It was the RnB stuff that had my wife searching her memory for what track to play next when we first listened. Extremely enjoyable Highs: the minis will expose bad material. The live version of Ecstasy of Gold by Metallica and the San Fran symphony gets particularly screechy. This is the same for some other low quality string based classical pieces. It is not evident in other recordings with live audiences such as Hotel California and the MTV live compilations. i think its recording specific, not an issue with the frequency per se. I have a lively room with a long slap echo, this would add to the phenomenon. YMMV Imaging/soundstage etc I have tried many positions for the minis and all manner of combinations of distance from the wall, each other, the listening position and toe in. I'm not certain i've found their 'perfect position' yet or if there are some aspects of my room that i wont be able to get around. What i do know is that subtle changes are detectable at the listening position. Using Paul McGowans set up CD, changing toe in, lateral separation has the predicted change in response. The width of the soundstage is extreme for any recording designed for it. The Sleigh in Roger Water's "Too much Rope" starts outside the room to the left, thunders across the room before it disappears way outside the left of the room. There are a couple of tracks with barking dogs on the Amused to death album, they are generally heard coming from behind the listener. This same surround effect of singers in the rear of the room is present in many songs i've not noticed it in before. Soundstage height is less predictable. 'Bubbles' by Yosi Horikawa has balls bouncing from the ceiling, for and aft (a little) and at distinct left to right positions between the speakers. Other tracks known for similar effects, such as Bucketheads Big Sur Moon do not attain any real height at all. As far as depth goes, aside from the minis throwing sounds to the rear of the room at times, i cant get any. I believe this to be a function of my room. I've discussed it on separate threads here previously, but my soundstage depth does not err from the front/rear plane of the speakers. Ever. Even when I've heard it from those same speakers in a different environment. 95% of the time it is at a single height too = the top of the speakers/entertainment unit. In summary, I love them. To my eyes, and more importantly to my wife's eyes, they are beautiful. They do almost everything i want them to, are dead easy to use and forgiving to place. Ross has been in touch several times since i took delivery, which i appreciate. I'm looking forward to settling on a placement that provides the best balance of soundstage, imaging etc and just sitting back and enjoying. I'd buy them again -

EXPIRED FS: Hegel H300 amplifier
Jone5y replied to hififan's topic in Stereo, Home Cinema, Headphones Components
Whilst the buyer of the amp is free to do what he likes with it, it does leave a bitter taste to know it was flipped for a higher price. Obviously that was not the intent of offering it for a good price here. Good luck with the sale, it's a great amp -
How much better is Atmos than 5.1 surround
Jone5y replied to Jone5y's topic in AV Receivers, Multi-channel Amps & Processors
Thats a concept i had considered under the floor previously (couldnt due to it being a thick reinforced concrete slab). Due to the design of the ceiling there is no significant void between it and the roof so unfortunately ceiling mounted subs wont be an option. No need to discuss further specifics of subwoofers and their placement at this stage, I'll start a new thread as suggested when the time comes -

I've learned she must see things in person. The journey to find new mains was a long one. After literally years of "do you like these?" from web photos, A trip to the hifi show was arranged to see as many as possible in the one place. It turned out that height was the disagreeable factor. With that determined, the search narrowed considerably -

I'll keep it in mind. It'll need a very gentle approach and sometime after the dust has settled on the upcoming upgrade to the fronts. -

Jone5y replied to Jone5y's topic in AV Receivers, Multi-channel Amps & Processors
Yep thats what i'm considering. From memory i think the 'mini marty' will fit in there. It'll be an incremental process over a decent timeframe tho, anything will be a big step up from the 3.0 system i have atm. The new mains will replace the current DIY bookshelves, that'll be a massive leap in quality and dynamics. Those bookshelves will get sent to the back for surround duty. More gains will be had in doing that. An updated AVR will add further to that in due course and Sub to follow when funds and wife tolerance allows. Well, thats the plan at this stage anyway... -

Oh I agree, but "must not be visible" is a requirement. Everything is a compromise, hence the unusual setup I have planned for the time being -

The pic is taken from in front of the TV looking to the rear of the room. The space available is behind the cupboard doors on the left. Its a brick/cement enclosure. Doors would be open when in use -

Exactly my situation. the only position with suitable WAF is the rear rt cnr of the room, in an enclosed space. No other options will be considered I will definitely do this. Some time may pass before doing so however, my better half has a strong desire to "just enjoy the new speakers when they arrive" before I "go making more changes and adding stuff" -
How much better is Atmos than 5.1 surround

Will still keep an eye out for used AVR bargains. Previous chats on here have pointed to rear placement for the sub not being ideal due to possible localisation/integration/cancellation issues -
How much better is Atmos than 5.1 surround
Jone5y replied to Jone5y's topic in AV Receivers, Multi-channel Amps & Processors
What I'm hearing is the general gist is that Atmos itself is not as important as the overall setup so I wont rush for a new AVR just yet. I think I'll grab the Panasonic DP-BP820 Bluray player. It has one HDMI for audio and another for the picture. That'll enable me to bypass the AVR's limitations and get a 4k Signal to the AVR. When the current one dies, I'll add in some ceiling speakers and upgrade to something like the Denon 3700 for a more complete experience. For a pseudo 5.2 arrangement, the makers of the speakers have recommended using a line combiner to merge the signal for the sub and mains together and onward to the mains (15" drivers). Might not be perfect, but a big step up from not having a sub at all. My only other option is a single sub in the rear of the room, which is also not ideal -
How much better is Atmos than 5.1 surround
Jone5y replied to Jone5y's topic in AV Receivers, Multi-channel Amps & Processors
Cheers didn't consider that the audyssey would be where the biggest difference might lie. -
Context: Ive got an old Denon 2311 (no 4K) which has HDMI 1.4 functionality currently acting as my control hub. There are HDMI 2.0 cables from PVR, PS4, DVD player to the Denon into a Arc input in a 4k 6 series Samsung TV. Streaming is provided by a Chromecast with Google TV, connected directly to the TV. My question basically boils down to whether i should a) connect a (new) Blu Ray player direct to the tv and eArc the sound from TV to receiver for 5.1 surround or b) upgrade the AVR to something like the 3700 (I need preouts), and connect all devices to it. I have tentative approval for some ceiling speakers in the medium term future For those who have experienced Atmos, or used a 3700, are either a significant jump from a 2311 and 5.1 and worthy of investing in?

Further information: Powerful amp with excellent connectivity. 250W into 8 ohms, 430 into 4, stable down to 2. If you've got difficult speakers to drive, or like it loud, look no further. Purchased from a forum member in 2020. Has had an easy life driving 96db efficient speakers speakers and is as close to mint condition as I can tell. If you're in the market for an integrated then you would be well aware of Hegel quality. Nonetheless, here is some literature that doesn't come from the guy selling it From Hegel themselves: https://www.hegel.com/en/products/discontinued/h300 Reviews https://www.theabsolutesound.com/articles/hegel-h300-integrated-amplifier#:~:text=If you're looking for,transparent%2C harmonious window of sound. https://www.soundstagehifi.com/index.php/reference-components/622-recommended-reference-component-hegel-music-systems-h300-integrated-amplifier-dac I am only selling as I am moving to active speakers. We also had an experience that mirrored yours. I had um'd and aah'd for a while about sharing it as it seemed in contrast to the good time most people had. This year's was my first show and like you, I took my partner along for her input. Our brief was simple, find something that sounded good to me (given the confines of the demo rooms) and look nice enough for her to want it in the main lounge. After managing to time our visits with jazz or diana Krall playing in most of the rooms we entered, my wife asked if we could listen to something else toward the end of the day. The response was "its a hifi show, of course we play jazz and Dianna Krall, what do you expect". Which was quickly followed by some inappropriate sexist banter between the vendor and other attendees about the singer herself. Needless to say we left the room and will spend our money elsewhere For us, the day was saved by our time in the Pitt and Giblin room, easily the highlight in terms of what we were there for.

Colour me interested. Were these from a published design or did you design them yourself?
