Stepped resistor ladder. Great for impedance matching downstream. IIRC lamp docs are like 600 to 1k ohm. -

Heil AMT made in Switzerland by http://precide.ch/eng/eheil/eheil.htm uses their own hand made Heil open baffle dipole MF/HF drivers in 2 way designs. Oskar Heil co-founded this company and gave them some unique trics. The speakers are not very expensive by audiophile standards (the most expensive, Kithara, is less than USD$7K). I have heard them all and owned 3 of the 4 models. http://www.amazon-audio.de/Engl_AMA_amt_one.html , also makes a Heil fully open baffle speaker with a 15inch woofer and sources the Heil driver from Precide. No other make of AMT matches the one from Precide, despite the marketing hype. The trick is to have the woofer keep up the unholy speed of the Heil AMT driver ( really, an Air Velocity Transformer). The 3 lower models use 6 inch mid/woofers and cross over at 1khz, while the flagship uses a 10inch woofer by crosses at 650hz, using a larger AMT tweeter. One neat trick with Heil AMT speakers is that all run perfectly in phase, so you can stack them up in a "wall of sound" sound configuration to increase soundstage height to taste. The Heils all have upward firing woofers so that the sound is pseudo "point source" and the AMT driver in the Kithara is a bit omnidirectional. Images like crazy. Nothing to do with ROON or any player per se. The limitation for Mac OSX playback is core audio, similar to Linux. The Dac will have to have a dedicated Mac OS driver to handle ablve DSD128, like the modified Steinberg Mac driver that ExaSound provides with their Dacs. Linux can do DSD256 of both the USB receiver and the Linux playback source are patched, as there is no official version of Linux that support these higher rates today....but it will come soon.

Yes, feedback at DSD512 is consistently good. Native rate playback opinion is mixed.

Anyone heard Chord Dave yet?
wis97non replied to hibo's topic in Digital Sources, DACs, and Computer Audio
Interesting! I heard the DAVE last November and liked it a lot, even though I hatted the Hugo. DAVE is a LOT better. It compared favourably to the MSB Select for me, but they were in 2 different rooms and in 2 different buildings, so a couple hours separated the listening experience. Though I prefer my Lampi Golden Gate , with R2R PCM and chipless DSD256, I was very impressed by DAVE. However, over at WB Forum (Chord Dave on a 2-Ch rig thread), someone with a MSB Analog Dac with optional power supply thought differently. To each his own! -

Yes, its has a stepped ladder volume control (2 resistors max in the signal path)and one analog input and 3 digital inputs. -
I personally know 3 former or current Trinity owners that now Lampizator Golden Gate Dacs at one third the retail price. Combine that dac with the new limited edition EML 45 Anniversary MESH globe and it's a winner. Lampi has chipless DSD engine and Ladder PCM in the same box. ...though many just upsample everything on the fly to DSD256 for playback. Very, very viable option for those of us that like the Lampi sound. A jewel in disguise. Having said that, the Trinity is wonderful on PCM, as is the Chord DAVE. I am hearing that the T+A Dac8 is great on (chipless) DSD 512. I heard the MSB Select in Show conditions and am still looking for the missing $70K!! That is, it sounded great, but nowhere can I justify the price on sonic grouds. The Nagra HD Dac at US$20K is a FAR better buy.

Nagra is very nice, but I am partial to DHTs and chipless DSD. See my baby here and a Bal version too: -
DSD DAC without Headphone amp and pre-amp
wis97non replied to DSD_Fan's topic in Digital Sources, DACs, and Computer Audio
For DSD??? Get a Lampi or the T+A Dac8. Both use chipless 1-bit converters. Lampi has the advantage of tube output to give musicality while maintaining great freq extension....and the Euforia is significantly cheaper. The T+A offers PCM too at US$4K. -
MQA CANNOT challenge DSD64 much less DSD256...all other things being equal, such as music mastering. I heard a demo of MQA and was decidedly underwhelmed. it think its more of a streaming play. Nothing close to DSD128. Methinks most here have never heard DSD done right. Plus, you dont need MQA in the Dac, you can have it in a streamer like the Aries feeding any Dac.

FPGA dacs like chord/psaudio direct stream and LAMPI DSD. none use commercial chips for conversion. -

I heard the Nagra in Sept at the house of the Stenheim CEO…lovely! I need to bring my GG there once to hear it thru his Ref Statement speakers. -

To me the TotalDac is not as good as even the Big7, but I have only heard one model. The Lampi PSU is better IMHO. To each his own opinion though. Yes, I am in contact with the "heavy hitters" as one Audiocrack is a pal and I have been to his house and have an open invit to return. His speakers are crazy good, I am told…Tidal L'Assoluta. Trinty is PCM only and Lampi has both PCM and DSD. The recent change to PCM has taken that closer to the chipless DSD. R2R ladder with FPGA control. My GG took about 2 weeks to arrive, but I am in Europe (Switz). Mine is SE, so less delay that Balanced…which was more popular and had a temporary chassis shortage since solved. The real beauty (and curse) of the level 7 Lampis are the tube fanaticism generated. I now have 10 pairs of DHT output tubes and about 13 rectifiers. Fortunately I got most of mine cheap and used locally. As the lampi is a gentle preamp circuit, even very weak tubes will work for a couple years and medium ones for 10 years. Changing tube combinations have GREAT impact on the presentation and is great fun. Also allows one to match tube to music genres! The GG is a stunning Dac when broken in and they take MONTHS to reach peak. Audiocrack finally got his server to work today and when we spoke he was grinning from ear to ear as his SECOND system is now sounding divine (and he does not yet have bespoke tubes like the Elrog 300B or EML Anniversary globe 45 yet. Mike Lavigne just got teh Elrogs and is now in love…he is Balanced DSD only! Nothing in digital sounds like Lampi DSD and with on the fly upconversion to DSD256 by HQP (or Bughead Emperor) and chipless playback….I cant ask for more! -

First off, I am no guru and have my subjective preferences like everyone else. Lampizator series 7 (Lite7, Big7 and Golden Gate) are fundamentally different to the Level 4. The 7 series use big bottle Directly Heated Triodes, like 45, 300b, 101d, 2a3, 6a3, VT-52, VT68,PX-04, KR242, etc. Any 4 pin DHT will work without a base adapter. There is a switch in the single ended Dacs to change the circuit optimization from 1 group to the other. The L4 uses small signal tubes. Furthermore, the DSD is "chipless" design (still quite unique in the Dac world) and the PCM has recently switched o R2R Ladder with FPGA control and is getting rave user feedback for increased resolution and dynamics, though certain tubes like the KR242 increase the dynamics of the Big7 with the older PCM implemenation as well. Lampi sound is amazing, especially the DHT Dacs and the DSD is divine. Upsampling PCM to DSD256 with a highend computer server in Core Mode with Bughead Emperor on the Golden Gate is the finest digital I hae ever heard so far and gets into reel to reel territory. IMHO. The Dave I heard at the show sounded superb, but it was still a very ate stage prototype and Rob Watts says the commercial version will be even slightly better. I dont like the Hugo at all, I prefer my Qute EX with LPSU, so when I give a thumbs up to the DAVE, I think that means something. I only heard PCM, so not sure if DAVE brings Chord DSD up to world class. All Chords lagged on DSD in my experience so far. The tech specs on the DAVE are outstanding and my demo listening was very positive, so i expect good things...unlike with my experience with Hugo. I never heard any Vitus Dacs, so cant comment there. Try to demo as much as possible, even at shows to get a handle on YOUR tastes, as that is all that matters in the end. -

HOWEVER, I HEARD NOTHING WORTH $90k...SORRY. JUST MY OPINION, NOTHING MORE. BUT I DID HEAR BOTH. http://parttimeaudiophile.com/2015/11/13/warsaw-2015-dac-ology/ -
