  1. damn it, to late. happy buying and selling guys... on a side note, if they both fall through @MediumBrownToast, I'm happy to take it.
  2. it's a good point, but to be honest its going to be the newest thing I have ever owned besides the speakers. all my gear is vintage marantz, denon, cary. etc. and the a-hem sansui (god rest its soul) but will ask to check over the internals for anything that might come up as glaringly obvious. Any idea if parts and service would be easily accessible. no known unobtanium parts to speak of that anybody knows about. Thanks again for all the help.
  3. There is parasound HCA 806-A for $400.00 near me as well, it has 4 channels you can bridge @ 240 watt per channel. it seems to get good reviews. and within my budget. so maybe, maybe. I guess any opinions on that, at least it's been up a while and shouldn't run the risk of being sold under my nose. If only my sansui b2101 didn't get butchered a while back I wouldn't be chasing.
  4. yea, there is a Halcro mc20 on gumtree near me for $2750, but that is unfortunately out of my price range. I should of just jumped on it when i saw it, I caught the ad at about the 35 minute mark. it just wasn't meant to be.
  5. and damn. It sold already, less than a day. Oh well. at least i get to keep my $900. Thanks all for responding.
  6. Hey Al, i just realized that sounded like a dig at you, it really wasn't. What was I thinking really! 'Sock' signature! I'm losing it a bit I think...
  7. thank you Leon and Al. I was thinking that last night. If i do take the plunge, and turns out it's no for me then what would resale value be like? good to hear I should easily be able to redeem the price of admission. Thanks again.
  8. Hey Al, thanks for the input. Just curious what you mean by 'sock signature'? i've never heard of that describing sound signature before. Mike
  9. Hey Damien, First of maybe let us know what equipment you currently have and if possible what speakers you think you might end settling on. this will let the community know possible best options with what connections everything has. SO... Depends on the outputs of your laptop but I'd warrant a guess you'd be looking at USB out from your laptop, but looking at the input of the speaker above it would need to be that square looking usb connection (can't remember the technical name for it). but if you happen to have optical out would probably be best. and i doubt you'd have RCA out from your laptop. another option is you could implement something of a USB DAC, but hopefully some other members can give some more comprehensive advice on that. that would be connect the DAC via USB/optical and then you'd have to go RCA cables from there. that could certainly help improve the sound depending on your current equipment and choice of DAC. And same would go for the PC connections, I would assume the creative 5.1 would have RCA out. so keep it simple. Going bluetooth is very convenient but depends on what device you are streaming from, for example , I have a little 2.1 edifier setup in my parents holiday house and what I I found bluetoothing from my i-phone 13 pro the sound is really not up snuff muddy, distorted etc, point being it depends in the implementation of the bluetooth module which will vary from device to device, as it turns out the bluetooth capability in the iphone 13 is somewhat sub-par. so something to look out for, if useing bluetooth, you'd want look for something called Aptx, its a HD bluetooth 'format', but i think it's best if it's implemented at both the streamer and the receiver end, but not necessary for both BUT i think it needs to be implemented at least in the streamer end (IF SOMEONE COULD ELABORATE/ CORRECT ME ON THAT?) but this would require buying new gear unless what you have now already has Aptx. you could then just try out a couple of options and see what you like the sound of best. But ultimately, my opinion, a good wired connection is typically the way to go if your after the best sound quality your current equipment can dish out. Hope this helps somewhat. Mike
  10. Hello to all again. So doing my regular scavenge through gumtree and came across a Halcro MC 50 going for $900, seller is highly rated and claims the amp is in good condition aside from the rubber feet on the bottom. I currently own a retro thermionic cello, which is a great little amp, but have always wanted to try something that has a lot of power, current, headroom just to see how the speakers perform. It would be driving a set of summoner 1093 srtl currently with a Cary AE3 tube amp in front of it. I like a clean natural sound leaning into something warmish and smooth (hence the tube pre). it almost seems this amp would be something close to endgame (especially considering my modest system) but also if i decide to upgrade various components later on down the track, this amp seems it could certainly be the beating heart of any upgrade/component change in the future. So I guess my actual question is does anyone see any potential problems or issues, being such a high powered amp compared to anything I've owned previously and any opinions from any previous owners? Any thoughts or opinions welcome. Mike
  11. What's that little weird furry acoustic treatment that sits on top of the horn? do you think it works? Certainly comes under the interesting/ home grown aspect of this topic.
  12. Good morning thejt. Im currently looking at a power amp, but don't really know much about class A/B design or chip amps. Basically I'd be running SET tube pre amp in front of it, speaker would be ascension summoners 180 watt 6 ohm, 91 DB sensitivity. Just wandering if this would be a bit a bit under powered to drive these speakers well? I'm also thinking i might pick marks brain regarding this. Thank you and look forward to your reply.
  13. ooooooooo, Thanks for the heads up, looks lovely. I'd love to have a crack but Im going to sit tight for a bit. a bit to much money for me at the moment. Looking on to see who would purchase this beautiful looking piece.
  14. Sorry all for the slow reply, had my 3 year old daughter by myself yesterday in the middle of toilet training. fun times. I did notice the part about the source direct and wondered that myself. glad you called, I was going to do the same when I had the time. and yea, when relating to an amp like a sansui alpha the description was terrible, but just looked now and hes edited the description to give a bit more info. previously he didn't mention it was 100 volt and he danced around the fact it only works in direct source. I'll be passing on it. On a side note maybe ill check yahoo japan and see what comes up. I really don't want to be buying another amp but is only because my sansui b2101 is in the shop and the current tech is having trouble sourcing correct components, its been there 6 months now. but this would never have happened if the previous tech did his job properly. May be I need to just sit tight and keep using the marantz pm 64 mk ii, which is a great amp but maybe a touch under powered for my speakers. but I do like the sansui sound better. Appreciate all for your input and sorry for the rant at the end. Cheers!
  15. G'day all to the brains trust. One for the Sansui nutters out there. Just looking online recently and stumbled upon a sanui au-alpha 907 for a touch under a grand. I know they are highly regarded amplifiers but judging by the quality of the ad I am a touch tentative. I just wanted to know how easily one could acquire parts and a suitable tech here in Perth if the need should arise (which I'm certain it will). as far as build quality go's i can only assume very good, but some input on this would be goods also. also is the price in the right ball park? As yet I have not contacted the buyer and wanted some opinions first, I have heard one the alphas previously (albeit a fair while ago) and remember enjoying the sound but cant remember what model. i am also the owner of Sansui b2101 power amp with a cary ae3 tube pre in front and chasing something similar sound wise. but seeing as a techie here in perth previously F'd it up and now dosn't answer my calls I am looking at options, hence this post. Any opinions appreciated. Thank you.
  16. would this suit your needs? I used to use one in my setup and never had problems with it,can do 2 sets of speakers and 2 sets of amplifier. rated at 200w (I think). https://www.playstereo.com/en/selettori-audio-video/2197-beresford-tc-7220-mkii-selector-for-amplifiers-speakers-8012420123100.html# Hope this helps.
  17. Simply hifi is perth based but not sure if they have a store front. check it here www.simplyhifi.com.au I've never dealt with them but know they have both new and used gear on offer.
  18. yep, I have one of these and think it is a very nice amp. id say the cost of repair is worth it considering if you were to buy a new amp today to the same quality you'd probably be paying into the thousands. But trust your own ears on that.
  19. Magico Ultimates? would love to hear these. what do they cost again???
  20. welcome mate not that clued up about AV receivers but to help narrow it down, how many channels do you need/want and what sort of features are you after and are you looking to expand on it later? more channels etc. Is there something specific about your current receiver that your not happy with? Lacking power to drive current speakers, missing something like bluetooth/airplay etc. or is it just at the end of its life? At $500.00 I'd be thinking you need to look at the used market place if that's an option but Im sure someone with more experience will be along shortly.
  21. or Jason Boyd from Ultrasystems/speaker Doctor. also a professional.
