  1. Soo, This sort of thing annoys me, he mentions the system worked 15 years ago, but cant confirm now whether the system is fully functioning?? Umm, how about plug it in and see if it functions? the seller mentions it is the complete system?? the seller is just talking himself out of a sale. Well, that's my rant for the week, now it's just going to be pleasantries and niceness. maybe.
  2. So Trevor, What's the deal with Monaros, sounds like you've got to get something off your chest?
  3. Oh, I know what I like, I'm quiet happy with my system and that's with a room that is not even properly treated, YET. And have heard reasonably expensive and well set up systems and yet I'm still happy with what i have. i'm not saying my system is the best of the best, not by a long shot but I can't see myself investing in a new system anytime soon, maybe just tweaking bits pieces here and there ie: room treatment obviously, postioning of speakers and the like. and currently cycling through a solid state integrated and a tube pre-amp in front of a solid state power amp. they both have obviously pros and cons. I'm just on a quest for knowledge, and its always good to get other peoples opinion and views. I am an infant when it comes to things hifi but have learned heaps since starting out also. for something that would seem so simple on the surface, there seems to be a bottomless pit of knowledge to be had. Oh well, enough ranting and topic derailment from me, it's beer/whiskey o'clock in a couple of hours and that means i get to go home and listen to more music.
  4. Ok, time for me to learn something, When people talk about colouration, do they mean colouration from one component to the next? (in the case of the example i had above with adding a power amp to the AVR, I heard pretty much no difference in sound besides being able to go louder and a tightening of the bass) or is it more about reproduction as close as possible to to what was originally recorded in the studio/ how the artist intended it to sound? but then that would also just depend on how a particular studio is setup also? Or is it to do with flat frequency response, or am I just missing something else all together?? I get the feeling I've just opened a can of worms the size of Uluru. Am I over analysing things again??
  5. Hi all, Sorry if i'm repeating anything from the above posts or if i have missed anything pertinant to the OP. Another opinion if i may, I have an AVR (marantz sr7007) which I thought was lacking power and sound quality so invested in a second hand power amp (Sansui b2101 200 watts into 8ohms), and while it certainly tightened things up the sound signature pretty much remained identical, a bit harsh and/or bright to my ears. i was always told a good quality power amp won't colour the sound of whatever is being fed into it (how true this actually is I'm still not sure). so if the avr is still doing the processing, its just going to sound like a more powerful version of the same avr. (as i'm typing this i've realised people have already mentioned this, especially like the tomato sauce on bread analogy ) sorry. So another option which I am currently now running (but takes up a bit more room), try and get a dedicated pre and power amp or integrated, there are plenty of price friendly options for second hand equipment on gumtree or ebay that i think will really surprise you quality wise. and because you're using the same set of speakers i have acquired an amp switch from ebay (beresford tc7220mk ii) which so far i have not had a single problem with and doesn't seem to colour the sound at all. from memory it was $165.00 off i-enjoy (based in Australia) I think the switch also has a bi-amping option as well. So now changing between quality music or watching a fully surround sound movie is literally the push of a button away. I think in this way you don't get the avr or your 2 channel gear influencing each other at all. I suppose if relevant the only influence would by the amp switch itself, which as mentioned above seems to not be the case at all. Hope this has been helpful.
  6. Damn your good reasoning and common sense! I have nothing more to say but to go with the flow.
  7. HAHA, I really try hard to keep the kilos down over the week, but then comes the weekend and I think to myself, why bother.
  8. actually sounds a lot like me to be honest... There's no need to be ashamed DJB, you should be proud of your appetite for beer, wine and pizza. I am.
  9. unassuming young man sipping water huh? hhhhhhhhmmmmmmmm....... The truth comes out.
  10. Holy Shitballs!!! I know sweet f!*k all about TT's, but is that price pretty close to the mark???
  11. Awesome pic!! Love a nice, rich, smooth, creamy hit of caffeine at least twice a day... but also love a good wine, beer, spirit when the time is right also. [EDIT] as for visuals whilst playing music? not for me unless it's a live recording DVD or BLU RAY, but i certainly wont complain about Alicia Keys seductively looking back at me...
  12. ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? a good point, but If he is telling the truth, and is easy and cheap to get these parts, then wouldn't you get them, install them and sell the unit as a functioning complete unit? but then his sale description is certainly convoluted also. why would someone pilfer 12-18 dollars worth of transport and laser that can apparently be obtained of the internet and then send it back to him? and what does he have to gain? he's surely not ripping anybody off at that price being that the average consumer is not spending $1000 on cd player and the people who know what they're buying would be wandering, if it only costs 12-18 dollars and (i don't know how many hours to install??), seems a little bit dodgy. But in saying that, he does have 100% positive feedback. Maybe he was drunk when he put the ad up. Just odd. ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? Ps: am i just over analysing this??
  13. Uuummmm, whats this 'tard up to?? It's being sold as working, but...um... not as a CD player????? Very strange. [Edit] oh right, i get it, but still as deano23 said....
  14. Yea yea i know, common sense must prevail, but i'm still gonna sit here and enjoy my time with it, maybe I'll get it looked over after christmas. And yes! lets hope i have scored a gem!
  15. Hey, Thanks for the thanks in strange kind of way Maybe this whole me finding the marantz through gumtree and you finding your KT 3's after viewing my link is a good omen?? We both seem to have scored excellent examples of what we wanted. I guess only time will tell, but i'm certainly confident that i wont need to be running this amp off to the techie to give it a once over. I've got a good feeling. Enjoy the KT 3's!! Mike
  16. I've got a feeling this amp has hardly been used, the internals just look to good. I think I stumbled upon an excellent, hardly used example. but that may be just wishful thinking from me. I think I'll re-contact the seller and see if he can ask his old man how much use it actually has on it?? I don't know? I sometimes have a weird sixth sense about stuff like this and I think i'm owed it considering the other second hand amps i've bought and the issues and money i've invested fixing them. Something has to go right for me sooner or later.
  17. ah cats, those furry little rats get into everything. claw the bean bags, in the linen closet, hiding under the bed.. on the amp?? really? Bbq cat anyone?!? Can't help but love those little shitheads.
  18. So picked up the amp yesterday, was nice and clean and looked very well looked after. Had it running for a few hours yesterday and didn't really run hot at all just warm. But will certainly give it a good run over the weekend and see how it go's.
  19. WOW, talk about efficient. Sale complete, made an offer of $400.00 which he seemed happy to accepted. I think that's a fair price for a nearly 30 year old amplifier. just got to pick it up tomorrow and hope everything actually is in good nick, certainly appears that way and the bloke seems very genuine. Cheers again to all.
  20. ah thank you all for the responses, I think I'm going to go for it, he says It only had one owner besides him (his father), he's an enthusiast who seems to know what he's doing and has done a full clean of the internals. he sent me some more pics to my mobile of the internals it indeed looks like a nice clean well looked after piece. thanks again to all. Mike.
  21. Good morning/afternoon all I have the option to buy marantz pm64 mkii off gumtree and just wanted some opinions of this amp. It will be driving a set of ascension summoners 1093 srtl. He is asking $450 for it. i have also asked him how many owners, service history and if he has any internal pics of this amp. so far i have read pretty much all positive reviews. But mostly just wanted to find out any opinions of this amp from here. I like a clean detailed sound leaning towards neutral/natural onto warm. Any help would be most appreciated. Mike. http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/innaloo/radios-receivers/marantz-pm-64-mkii-amplifier/1118012536
  22. yep, there some nice rust going on there...
  23. Hey again, As i think was mentioned by a few people above (I'm having a few beers tonight so probably missed comments above, sorry to anyone who i'm double quoting) Play with the room dynamics and room treatment for a bit, this is very relevant at the moment as I'm currently listening to some music now in my concrete jungle of a music/theater room (has some junk and rugs and a couch [renovations]). after months weeks days of listening you can tell what some detrimental issues may be. and it's actually a good learning experience listening in badly treated rooms and well treated rooms as I've found out. And that's not the beers talking either (well maybe alcohol does have bit an impact on your listening experience but i'm not that drunk)
  24. I shouldn't really say because its his business and being different amps the pricing may be different. But my sansui b2101 power amp was around $140-$160 (cant exactly remember) for the initial testing stage. and if, for example, your amp has an issue, depending on what needs servicing replacing could cost anything from $200 -$2000 (as an example). and with my amp, because I went ahead with the service he waived the initial testing fee. But again I stress every amps obviously different, so a guide of sorts only. Hope this has been helpful.
