  1. Thanks Gordon. Don't worry, I wasn't planning on re-powering after that show! I'm in Sydney's Inner West, pretty sure that Classic Hi-Fi in Newtown have a tech that deals with tube amps, I'll give them a call unless other SN members have other recommendations. Appreciate your response, cheers, Brad.
  2. So last night my venerable AI500 decided to blow. Very sudden; I noticed one of the EL34s was glowing bright orange, then within 30 secs it went purple, then pop! Fair amount of smoke from the back of the amp. I've had an EL34 go bright orange before and have just replaced the quad set of valves, but never anything like this. Any idea of what's gone, aside from the tube, much appreciated. Also any recommendations for a brand of EL34, I might steer clear of Electro-Harmonix from now on...
  3. Ah Boston, there's a ghost from my long-haired past, what a great noise! All good re tape out to line in, thanks all.
  4. That's kind of what I was thinking in the first place, but I'm mindful that attempting this incorrectly could lead to a world of pain. The Marantz isn't being used for anything else, so a spare line in is no problem.
  5. I have a Marantz KI66 solid state integrated amp that I've been hanging on to since a friend kindly gave me an Audio Innovations 500 integrated tube amp. The AI500 is wonderful, but it lacks a headphone output so I'm wondering if there's a way to hook up the Marantz to the AI500 to use solely as a headphone amp? The headphone stage on the Marantz was pretty well regarded in its day. All thoughts/ridicule happily received. Thanks, Brad.
  6. Many thanks all. Hensa, I did check with regular and 180g vinyl and there is a slight but noticeable "downtail" for both. Soundfan I will PM you re that VTA adjuster, thanks.
  7. Hi all, just invested in the above cart for my Rega Planar 3. Sounds terrific, but I've noticed that the arm slightly tilts up towards the cartridge, as opposed to being level. Is this an issue? I know that some people recommend using 2mm or 4mm spacers underneath the RB300 arm unit when using certain carts, any thoughts? Thanks, Brad.
  8. OK, pics are attached, let me know if they are useful (first time posting pics so apologies in advance...).
  9. Thanks for your replies folks. I'll try to post a pic tonight, and if that doesn't lead to anything I'll try the Speaker Hospital, they're not too far from me in the Inner West. Cheers, Brad.
  10. Can anyone recommend an outlet that might sell binding posts for Kef Q35s? One of mine's broken and I'm having no luck with Kef, either directly or through a dealer...thought Jaycar might be able to help but they don't have anything the right size. Any advice gratefully received.
  11. Hi Dealo, in ref to Sgt Pepper, I have an '80s stereo Japanese pressing (Toshiba) and it sounds...FAB...for want of a better word. Over Christmas I picked up the new mono release just to see what all the fuss is about. It's also FAB, but quite a different listening experience to the stereo version. If it's a favourite LP of yours, as it is for me, you won't regret having either or both! After 40-odd years of vinyl addiction I still find a lot of fun in experimenting...ENJOY.
  12. And if Marsy thinks twice about it I'll take it off your hands for a mate of mine...
  13. Hi all, many thanks for the tips, I'll do some more investigation. Ken, I'm running the Rega through a late 80s Audio Innovations 500 tube amp. I'll dig around for the manual, will be in the box somewhere.. Thanks again and Happy New Year! Cheers, Brad.
  14. Hello, this is newbie Brad posting from Sydney's inner west. Looking for a replacement for my ageing Linn K9 cartridge on my Rega Planar 3. Saw someone was selling a near-new Dynavector 10x5, which I've heard is a good match for the Rega - grateful for feedback from anyone who has this combo, also any other carts up to $500 I should consider? Planar 3 is mid 90's with RB300 arm plus the motor upgrade. Will keep nosing around, lots of good info here by the looks of things. Cheers, Brad.
  15. Hi, whereabouts in NSW are you? Would it be possible to hear this cartridge on your system? Anm interested in one of these to replace the ageing Linn K9 on my Rega Planar 3. I'm in Sydney. Cheers, Brad.
