Black Friday Sales (2024)
AvSat44 replied to captain starlight's topic in General Hi-Fi & Beginners Discussion
I'm hoping to pick up a 4K TV at around 40 to 43 inches for my PC. I'm going to park my Wharfedale Dentons (vintage ones) on either side so that I can listen to my faves and work at the PC as well. Why such a large monitor? Well I don't actually need it, I just want it. I don't need all the "smart TV" stuff, just a super clear monitor. Should be nice with music vids. Besides, try buying a large 4K monitor that isn't 16:9. I'm not a gamer so these long, narrow, curved monitors are a drag. -
Their equipment may be/sound very good but the pricing isn't justified. In the statement from Mr. Deletraz, the thing that really concerned me was where he said "will now be made only on demand". This is BS speak for give me your money in advance and I might build you something and when I go broke...... too bad. Also, he doesn't want owners of his gear to sell off because it'll devalue the perceived luxury/rarity of the gear. I would imagine that owners would struggle to recoup their "investment" in years to come. Investing in audio equipment with the hope of making a financial gain is optimistic to say the least. I think we all know that doesn't happen unless maybe in the case of a Marantz Model 7 and the like. Finally, I wonder if Jay's Audio Lab would would care to be highlighted as his "personal friend" as you might then start over analysing everything Jay says!

Duntech Speakers Owners & Discussion Thread
AvSat44 replied to Mr Frank's topic in Speakers, Soundbars and Subwoofers
I'm not really all that peed off about what I found. Curious would be appropriate. The Sub works, The external Active Crossover works. So for $200 I consider myself to be way ahead. When situations like this occur, I have this innate desire to find out the history behind a situation. I would dearly love to know what the original driver was, even though I will not be able to find one. I'll refurbish the crossover and the plate amp, restore the cabinet and if I can't get this driver to do what it's told, I'll chose an appropriate replacement. You see, it's the history in this hobby (or rabbit hole) as much as anything else (for me anyway). Thank you for your response as it is most valued. I hope others will assist me in my search. -
Duntech Speakers Owners & Discussion Thread
AvSat44 replied to Mr Frank's topic in Speakers, Soundbars and Subwoofers
Further to my post of 02.10.24, I have removed the driver of the IB-20 and discovered, of all things, a Magnavox sticker and a Total Recoil Sticker. The TR sticker indicates that the driver was most likely worked on as it has a roll surround fitted. In all my years of playing in this sand pit I've never seen a Magnavox driver with this type of surround as they were usually just a ribbed continuation of the cone. Also, why is there an early 1970's driver in a product built in 1986. Surely Mr. Dunlavy wouldn't have used a speaker of this type (especially with limited excursion) in his products. The plot thickens...... -
Duntech Speakers Owners & Discussion Thread
AvSat44 replied to Mr Frank's topic in Speakers, Soundbars and Subwoofers
I'm new to this discussion so hello to all. Some years back, I purchased a pair of Black Night's (PCL-400) from Encel in Melbourne. I thought that my speaker journey was over but financial issues presented a situation where I had to move them on along with the Krell KSA-100's that were driving them. I am now looking again. I did manage just last night to pick up an IB-20 Thor sub woofer and wondered if anyone on this forum had any experience with them. I'm trying to get the schematic of the outboard crossover as this was built around 1986 so it's probably due for a re-cap at the least. Any help would be seriously appreciated. -
Just picked up a Pioneer SPL-110
AvSat44 replied to Fletcher Gregory's topic in Turntables, Record Players & Vinyl
I know this post was started years ago but I have to let you know that the Pioneer PL-110 and SPL-110 are two quite different turntables and the manual for the PL-110 on VE is pretty much useless for the SPL-110. If I could find a manual for the SPL-110, I would be handing them out by the dozen. -
How to connect turntable
AvSat44 replied to ronnybee's topic in General Hi-Fi & Beginners Discussion
If you don't want to buy on line, go to a Jaycar store. They have a couple of cheap entry level phono stages for you to look at. They also have retailers that distribute their wares in the regions. Have a look at their website or chose the one closest to you and call them. Cheers. -
I had recently been discussing the amount of equipment that I had collected over many years with a friend who had the same problem. We agreed that a lot of what we had just wasn't being used or ever would. He is very good at selling off gear that has sat in the corner for a while and just has a good focus on the equipment he is listening to and how he might improve it while I have just kept collecting (hoarding). I am now hell bent on moving a lot of gear on and up until a while ago had items listed variously on Stereonet, eBay, Marketplace and Gumtree. My Gumtree account was hacked so I shut that out all together as Gumtree required a new email address. eBay was just so damn expensive for the seller so I limited that to electronic components only. Marketplace is driving me crazy with the number of ghosters that respond to my listings. I've had a couple of ghosters and other issues (probably my fault) with Stereonet and I guess I'll move some more items on to this as it seems far more stable/genuine. It is Gumtree, however, that surprised me though. I decided last week to set up an additional email address and reinstate my Gumtree account. I then listed 2 items to see what would happen. All good so far you might say. But wait! Over the past week I have had nine, yes 9, responses to those 2 listings and Gumtree had blocked every single one of them because they were bad news. So much for that little exercise. I'll leave them there until they expire and that will be the end of that. Marketplace isn't much better. They don't block anyone so unless you are savvy, you can get pinged there. I think that I average one legitimate response in every twenty that I get. Even some of the "FOR SALE" adverts are dodgy! I should point out here that I am not a dealer or flipper of equipment. I love buying and restoring vintage gear (especially turntables and speakers) and that's why I've ended up with so much gear. I just couldn't bear to part with it. Is it just my luck or is it a sign of the times? I never had problems like these back in the day with the (paper) Trading Post. It was quite exciting going down to the newsagent early on Thursday mornings, pulling out the audio section and throwing the rest away . Any views on this?

What's the 1 LP or CD that makes your system shine?
AvSat44 replied to Teee's topic in General Hi-Fi & Beginners Discussion
And you’ve just reminded me that I’ve owned “Please Please Me” since 1963. It’s still playable and it’s mono. It has one problem and that is that someone turned the bass control to zero during recording! -

I could just imagine the Pseudo Echo version of Funky Town. I can even listen to it on YouTube. -

Hi Rafal. Agree with everything that VanArn has put up. I see that you are in Sydney but I would recommend Tanka Speaker Repairs in Melbourne. You can post to them. The contact is Adam Tanka and the number is 0404 529 489. Adam does excellent work as did his father (Atilla) before him who was considered a legend in this area prior to his passing. They specialise in vintage drivers. -

Just commenting on the Audio Nut choices. I had to look for it, but I have a 12" single of "Out of Touch" by H&O. It plays at 45 RPM, and it sounds absolutely sensational. Way better than the LP version or CD for that matter. As silly as it sounds, the 45 RPM 12" singles always sounded great. It was as if they were able to breathe. I've discovered that I have about a dozen of these. One of them, "I Hear Motion" by the Models, also sounds insane! I remember that they were a bit of a "thing" in the 1980's. Does anyone have any of these? -
How do you test second hand gear?
AvSat44 replied to Dandelion's topic in General Hi-Fi & Beginners Discussion
I would probably not buy a used AVR. Of the half dozen or so that I've purchased over the years, only one was fully functioning. How could you possibly know if the AVR was working properly with a 5 or even 15 minute test drive. As mentioned earlier, they are very complicated pieces of equipment with many features and walking into a respected shop front and buying new will get you piece of mind and WARRANTY! -

I can only think of Abbey Road. Probably not the best recording ever but I love it! -
Douglas Hi-Fi Melbourne?
AvSat44 replied to Mark Krause's topic in General Hi-Fi & Beginners Discussion
I bought an Akai reel to reel deck from their store in my 20's. Cost me a fortune. It was a GX-646. I still have it and it still works. It only gets cranked up maybe twice a year. I originally had it running into a Luxman SQ77T/II (which I also still have) with Wharfedale speakers. The other source was a Goldring G99 turntable with a grace arm and Lux cartridge. The amplifier and turntable were purchased from the MAN himself, Alec Encel, at his original Bridge Road, Richmond store (closer to the Yarra) where he also sold whitegoods. The Wharfy's came from the uncle of a friend who worked for Astor Records in Centre Road, South Oakleigh. The uncle used to supply us with new release 45's at the time. I'm also pretty sure that after the Douglas HiFi store in Bourke Street closed, they re-opened in Whitehorse Road, Mitcham. Someone please tell me I'm not dreaming. -
Obsession - a cautionary tale
AvSat44 replied to AJL999's topic in General Hi-Fi & Beginners Discussion
I have a friend who does not care to collect and/or play too much with his gear. He has a nice system (but not high end) and when looking for a piece of equipment to add to or replace an existing item he spends time researching products and will ultimately make a decision. He is far more interested in listening to the music and will be quite happy to listen to the same song on an iPhone, his car radio or his home system. It's the song that make him happy (I think). I was becoming a little bit Fritzy and recently woke up to the fact that I could listen to the same song on pretty much anything and am now in the slow process of reducing my collection of hifi equipment to what I will actually use. At one time prior to the pandemic, my amplifier count alone was up around 30 odd pieces. While my path was a bit different to that of Mr. Fritz, I find it a little sad that by the time he had finished building his (rather ugly) empire state building, his hearing would have been well past it (regardless of any other illness). I'm now happy to spend my free time listening to music on Spotify with my desktop PC through a pair of headphones or on my main system. It's a shame Mr. Fritz didn't as they say.... stop to smell the roses. -
Second-hand gear vs new gear
AvSat44 replied to Michael Loh's topic in General Hi-Fi & Beginners Discussion
I've sold a lot of refurbished/restored gear over the last 20 years. When a buyer attends my home I always try and get them to have a good listen, be it an amplifier, turntable or speakers. It's definitely worth it for the buyer who can decide after half an hour or so if the item is really what they want. I base my pricing on what the market will tolerate and I generally make a small margin on the sale as it's not all about the $$$. There is no warranty on this sort of gear so once they've handed over the cash and had a good play with the item, it's simply a case of "caveat emptor" and there is no responsibility on my part to come to the party if something goes wrong a couple of weeks later. This is pointed out prior to any funds exchange. It's also one of the reasons I dislike shipping items. It all may seem a little tough for the buyer but some of the gear can date back to the 1950's and I'm not selling them a new car. -
Vale John Barbuto.
AvSat44 replied to Be Quiet...Listen's topic in General Hi-Fi & Beginners Discussion
John was introduced to me in the early 2000's by a fellow audiophile. He arrived at my home with a friend in a little white "Bongo" van. I brought them upstairs and showed him the items (a very large collection of mainly vintage English gear) and he just bought the lot without any demo's. An hour or so later, I waved good bye as they drove off with John's friend leaning over his seat into the back so that all the gear didn't fall on them. In that brief visit I met a gentle but determined man and can only wish that I had continued the relationship. RIP JB. -

Pull all of the drivers out and let Adam inspect/test them. He won't charge for that. I'm certainly still very happy with him and he'll definitely charge you a lot less than Osborn who will just want to sell you another driver. I'm pretty sure that Osborn outsource everything anyway (correct me if I'm wrong). These speakers don't look that old, but never say never. If they are say 15 to 20 years old it might be time to replace the caps and any resistors that have become discoloured duet o over heating. As for the cabinets, they appear to only be discoloured and not damaged. I've restored plenty of cabinets with this issue as it's simply a case of rubbing them back and refinishing them but please... not with those oils and waxes that everyone seems to like so much! -
A beautiful (and rare) Luxman SQ77T/II Stereo Amplifier (circa 1968). The timber cabinet has been restored and looks fantastic. It also has a new complying power cord and new feet that match the original ones. The amplifier works as it should and all controls are quiet. It's rated at 30 watts RMS per channel into an 8 ohm load. It also has a sweet phono stage. Included is a nicely bound copy of the instruction manual and schematic diagram, plus a pair of connectors that suit the rather unusual speaker connectors. It does have a tiny mark on the front panel but it is barely noticeable. It would have to be the best one for sale in Oz today! Location is postcode 3128.

Further Information: Selling a rare Marantz Model 2285B AM/FM Stereo Receiver in excellent condition. Front panel, controls and cover all look very nice. All functions work as they should. The unit was serviced 3 years ago by Sound United (Qualifi) who are the importer and service agents in Australia for Marantz. This receiver is an absolute beast with an output power conservatively rated at 94 watts RMS per channel into an 8 ohm load with a frequency response of 10Hz to 40Khz. AM and FM sensitivity are impressive, even with minimal antenna. The M/M phono stage is also a cut above the rest. This “B” version should not be mistaken for the earlier 2285 version which was lower powered and didn’t look as good. It weighs in at 17kg unpacked and measures 440mm wide x 137mm high x 362mm deep. Included is a nicely bound copy of the owner manual, service manual and schematic. Collection is from postcode 3128. Shipping is not an option but I’m happy to assist the buyer with their own arrangements. I can demo for the buyer and I’ll entertain any sensible offer.

Adam Tanka (son of the famous Atilla) would be my choice. I take all my driver repairs to him MF he is very good and his turnarounds are excellent. He is located in Reservoir. cheers.
