  1. The SVS sb 1000 does not have DSP ( the new sb 1000 pro does,) so no my subs do not have built in DSP. I have been trying to set the cross overs, phase and gain all by ear, and while I have improved things with minor adjustments getting the balance right is troublesome. I wondered if DSP might help, but it looks to be difficult to integrate in my system.
  2. Thanks for the link. I have had a quick look at the Antimode 2.0 but I might be missing something. To use with an integrated amp they suggest using power amp in, but as indicated above I don’t have this on my amp. The other option shown is to connect all sources directly to the Antimode and then connect the Antimode to the line in on integrated amp. The only problem I note with this is there is only one set of RCA inputs on the Antimode, but I have 3 sources to connect. Am I missing something or is there a way to connect 3 sources using RCA?
  3. Thanks Andy, unfortunately my integrated does not have a power amp in, only line level in. Does this effectively mean I can not use any form of DSP in my system as it stands?
  4. This question is posed as a follow up to my post about the use of subwoofers in a 2 channel system; firstly thank you to everyone who contributed to that discussion. Following on from my subwoofer question, I ended up getting two SVS SB-1000 subwoofers, as 2 subs seemed to be recommended to give the best in room response. One of the topics that came up was the use of DSP to help integrate the subs into the music system. Now I confess I had not heard of DSP, I know nothing about DSP, and I am somewhat ignorant when it comes to understanding computers, software, apps and the like and so am looking for any education and advise on this subject. There were a number of opinions on how to connect the subwoofers. I initially tried to connect using RCA from my pre-amp to sub 1 and then RCA out of sub 1 to sub 2. However when playing around and trying to integrate these it did not work very well. I contacted SVS and they advised that the RCA out on the SB 1000 is high-pass filtered of bass below 80Hz so can not be used to connect to another sub, and that both subs should be connected from the pre-amp one cable per side. This is how I have now connected the subs, effectively in stereo, which are located L and R between and near to the main speakers, and I have been playing around over the last couple of weeks trying to get them integrated the best I can by ear. I have also been reading a bit about DSP and looking at how to measure and set crossovers etc. but it is all going over my head a bit. My system is mainly based around vinyl although I do have a CD transport and DAC, but I do not stream music. Below is how my system is currently connected. So to some of the questions I have running through my mind. Can DSP only be used in a digital system? Where in this system would I put DSP? What sort of unit should I be looking at? How would I connect it? How do I use it to blend subs with speakers? Do I use the sub cross overs at all or is it all done via DSP; if so where is the frequency, phase and gain set on the subs? What do I use to measure the response ?(presume a calibrated mic and some form of software). How is the sound generated and connected to the system? Any and all information and discussion on this subject welcome. thanks Derek
  5. I have Graham Slee phono stages and really like them and a benefit is you can do a home trial with no obligation to buy and see how they are in your system/room However GS does not do a MM/MC combined phono; more info here https://www.hifisystemcomponents.com/phono-preamps/ One component he does is a MC step up with variable loading - The Elevator. You could use one with your MM phone stage, and I believe there is one for sale in the Classifieds at the moment at a pretty good price.
  6. This is the back of the subs, it has both line level in and out, so I am assuming I can run L&R RCA to line in on sub 1 and RCA s out from sub 1 to sub 2? Or would it be better to run L to one and R to the other? The position of the subs will be symmetrical and close to L&R mains as per attached picture. I will put the second sub where the guitar amp currently is near the R main.
  7. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread, I have been learning a lot. One thing that seems to be consistent is the view that 2 subs is better than 1. I got the SB 1000 at home and it is actually smaller than I was imagining and fits in well, but better still I think if I move things a little I have room for a second sub. Better still my wife didn't seem to object when I suggested it. So, I have now ordered a second sub. I still don't have the RCA cables yet as I ordered these from Bill through this Forum and they have not been made yet. So a follow up question on how to connect the second sub. I initially ordered a pair of RCA cables to connect from my pre amp out to sub. Do I get a second pair to connect from RCA out of 1st sub to the second, or do I change my order to get different cables and connect L to one sub in and R to second. The subs will be 3m and 5m approx. from the amp, would it be detrimental to have rca's different lenghts if I connect one cable to each. There has also been some discussion about using DSP, but mine is an analouge system and I don't have or know anything about DSP and will be using the Sub x-over to integrate these. Thanks again Derek No I don’t have speaker cables, and I need 3m RCA cables to reach from my amp to where sub will be located. I'll just have to wait a bit, hopefully not too long though before I can try it out. Have been listening today and can't help wonder what the sub will add.
  8. If you do decide to get the re-tip done, I can endorse Chris's work as it was my DL 110 he did, I'm sitting here listening to it right now, it really is very good
  9. No I don’t have speaker cables, and I need 3m RCA cables to reach from my amp to where sub will be located. I'll just have to wait a bit, hopefully not too long though before I can try it out. Have been listening today and can't help wonder what the sub will add.
  10. Thanks, my new SB 1000 will hopefully arrive tomorrow but I have to wait for cables to be made before I can try it out.
  11. Thanks Mike, I have taken advice to try the RCA from pre amp and have ordered appropriate cables from Bill. Cheers Derek
  12. Thanks for the confirmation, I have an sb 1000 on the way!
  13. Excellent, thanks Dave. Looks good and somewhat similar to what I am considering in relation to positioning with sub near to the mains, albeit mine will be to the inside between the mains but close to one of them.
  14. Thanks Snoop, although they look good a bit out of my price range at this time. I may well experiment with a single sb-1000 and if it makes a noticeable difference I might be able to move things around and fit a second one in down the track.
  15. Thanks again Andy. As I said I am somewhat limited in my available placement for a sub, but it will be between the mains, albeit much closer to one than the other, and almost exactly the same distance from my main listening spot as the mains, so hopefully I should be able to integrate this well into my system. Looks like I now just have to spend some money and then do some more experimentation. ? Cheers Derek
  16. Thanks Andy. You have confirmed my thinking on the SVS. Unfortunately any sub that goes below 20Hz looks to be too large for the space I have available, not to mention WAF. My amp does have preamp output, so can I confirm the best way to connect the sub is separate RCA cables from this output? Thanks again,, Derek
  17. Thanks, your comments reinforce a lot of my reading on the use of a sub
  18. OK, so I have very little knowledge about subwoofers and in particular their use in a 2 channel music only system, so thought I would ask the more knowledgeable members here for some insights and advice. Firstly, and I know this can be a contentious question, do I need a subwoofer or is it likely to improve my system; I have read several threads here and on other Forums about a well integrated sub adding a richness and depth to a 2 channel set up, but I really don't know. I currently have Monitor Audio Silver 500 speakers; these have 2 x 8" bass drivers in each cabinet and a frequency response of (-6 dB) 30Hz - 35Hz; my amp is a Rega Elex-R. My room is 8m x 5m but open on one side to a staircase and hallway. I get pretty good bass from my speakers, but will still lower frequencies potentially provided by a sub going to improve things? I have been considering something like an SVS SB-1000 Pro or perhaps a Rel T/5i as these seem well regarded for music and are within my budget; I don't want to spend too much initially as I don't know whether a sub will make a difference and space for a sub is limited. Are either of these sufficient to make a difference in my set up/room? I am leaning towards the SVS; this has a 12" driver and a frequency response of 24Hz ±3dB, whereas the Rel only has an 8" driver and 32Hz at -6bB, which is no better than my MA speakers and according to Rel, prefers to be placed in a corner, which is difficult in my room. Am I missing anything here, or are there other options? Another question is about how to connect these to my integrated amp. On this Forum there is a basic set up guide that says "connect the subwoofer in parallel with your main speakers. If your sub is near the mains, simply connect another pair of cables from the main speakers to the sub amp. If closer to the amplifier, you may connect another pair from the amp to the sub." I am limited in my placement options for the sub due to room layout, being open plan to one side and with full length windows along the opposite wall. The only real option I have is on the front wall between, but close to either one of the main speakers. So to confirm the above information, am I able to connect the sub using speaker cable from one of the main speakers posts directly to the High Level input on the Sub? Can anyone see any problems in connecting in this way? Any further advice/information/ guidance on how to set up and integrate a sub is appreciated. Thanks Derek
  19. You already have VM95 body, the ML stylus will bring out the detail without loosing the mids, and is the most cost effective of your options. That would be my suggestion.
  20. I don't have any cassette tapes, and agree back in the day I only had them for the car, but its not just Hipsters rediscovering tapes. My wife had boxes of them stored away, mostly all pre-recorded and some even signed by artists she had seen in concert, so she had a sentimental attachment and did not want to get rid of them but she had nothing to play them on. I actually got her a vintage deck, cleaned the heads and fitted new belts for her to use in a secondary system - she is now very happily listening to these again.
  21. Thanks for the link, as I said there is always something to learn. My initial thoughts were that the Sorbothane was not thick enough, really interesting to note that I actually had too much of it based on the calculator. For me that is sort of counter-intuitive and perhaps why it is difficult for people to get the right size of Sorbothane product for their needs. I guess it would help if specific Sorbothane products had min and max loading indicated, but my experience has been that is not the case, so you just try and guess what will work (without knowing about the calculator). I might try and trim the pads down that I have and see how they match against the Whites pads as a bit more of an experiment; one thing for sure though they are too big to use under any of my components.
  22. I hadn't heard of the Whites anti vibration squares before reading about them on this Forum, so thought I would give them a try. My listening area is on the first floor of my house, so my floor standing speakers are on a suspended timber floor and need some isolation. I have them sitting on bamboo chopping boards which had Sorbothane pads between the boards and the floor. The Sorbothane was 10mm thick and 50 x 50 squares; this worked quite well. But having read about the Whites squares, I was in Bunnings the other day and thought that for $11 for 2 packs of for, I might try them out as an experiment. I bought the 100 x 100 x 12.5 pads and tried them under the bamboo boards. I was surprised by the noticeable improvement; the bass tightened up significantly. My speakers are nearly 23KG each, so the Sorbothane I had been using may not have been thick enough or large enough area to be sufficient for the weight; the Whites pads are thicker and a larger area so that may be why they are better, I really don't know. But for really very little cost and a bit of experimentation I have an improvement to my system. That's the reason I enjoy reading these types of Forums - there is always something new to learn or try.
  23. I think we are talking about the same thing, but to me Tax is a duty set by the Government and paid to the Government i.e. GST or other import duties. The cost charged by a distributor would include the cost of the goods, shipping and import duties and distribution cost to retailers as well as their profit margin. It is when there is no competition that a distributor can raise their profit margin and the RRP increases. I could see no valid reason for the increase in the cost of the speakers I wanted; import and distribution costs may have increased a bit, but not 25% so to me this was the new distributor just hiking prices and increasing their profit margin. We all want to support our local HiFi retailers, but sometimes their hands are tied with the cost charged by the distributor, so equipment here can be considerably more expensive than overseas.
  24. Is it tax, or the distributors mark up? When there is only one importer and distributor they have a monopoly and the individual retailers are stuck with the price. A few years ago when I was auditioning some new speakers at a local retailer, the ones I liked I was told had just changed Australian distributor and there had been a corresponding price increase to RRP. This was in the region of nearly 25%, even though the cost had not changed with the manufacturer. Luckily for me, the retailer had some in stock from the old distributor I was able to purchase.
