Do U use THX processing modes on your Amp/Receiver?
HT replied to desray's topic in Home Cinema General Discussion
jonlee Did I hear Lexicon!!! How differrent is the L7 processing to Yammy's? HT ;D -
Hi All: Had a great experience at Jason's place last nite. :o All I can say is , when it comes to Home Theater, dedicated THX speakers are the way to go. After listening to Jason's M &Ks, it reminds me of the old days when HiFi specialists was demoing the THX demo disc, the impact it left me an impression that was unforgettable. That was experienced agian last nite. 1st off, the system sounded very balanced especisally between the front and surrounds. The soundfield seems to fuse making ambient surrounds more believevable. Jason uses dual tripole surrounds for his rear channels , as opposed to a single a single rear direct firing(like mine) , they are capable of delivering diffuse sounf and yet be directional is required. This is somthing I have not heard with my direct rear centre. ROTS dvd on M & Ks S5000 LCR, Surr with Tripole rears , dual SVS PB ultra and 1 MX 5000!!! (Phew !! :o) Even using Jasons; system, it is confirmed that ROTS has got NO midbass . Saber clashes lacks the lows experinced in ATOC(he played that after). In another forum, someone came up with a good explanation to the huge difference between ATOC and ROTS, (other than Gary Rydstrom not at the helm ) , it leads directly to New Hope., and the saber fight there isnt fantastic. Diagloue is good and clear , though not as forward as ATOC. Diverging a little frm title. Jason played a whole barage of other demos, (mostly horror with extreme shock factor!), DTS demo disc etc.. Jason HT is one of the refernces I have heard in most HT setups. With the very best being that heard in recent years' at CES, the DTS demo room using large active mains and Lexicon's flagship pre/pro !!!! :o Grt stuff Jason. It will take some time to re-adjust my expectations back to my system. Oh, yes, PQ was pristine , faithfull to the original HD transfer. HT ;D

Hi taken off the M &K Web site. :D Wonder if any M&K owners' in here can verify the full potential of EPIII DVD playback....... Here's the full Rick McCallum Quote: "As I began planning the production of Star Wars Episode I, 'The Phantom Menace', I realized that there was a great opportunity to fundamentally change the way we create movies. One of the ways we did this was to improve the production process by incorporating high quality audio monitoring into the earliest stages of filming and production. We selected Miller & Kreisel Professional's monitoring system based on its reputation, but its performance actually exceeded our expectations, allowing us to use our premix tracks and sound elements in the final soundtrack without re-mixing. "In fact, all of the work done on our Miller & Kreisel Professional systems translated seamlessly into the dubbing stage and cinema without any surprises. The Miller & Kreisel Professional monitoring system clearly allowed us to produce a superior soundtrack at a lower cost than any monitoring system we have ever used before." "We've been using M&K THX speaker systems on the Star Wars films for the past 6* years in both the sound design and picture editing suites. The M&K THX speakers' accuracy and imaging qualities let us hear all the nuances of dialogue, music and sound effects at every stage of the creative process. This gives us the ability to create the powerful, yet subtle and persuasive soundtracks that are the hallmark of the Star Wars films." — Rick McCallum, Producer, Star Wars Episodes I, II, and III* ...now 9 years, since Episode III is included HT

Finally got to watch EPIII DVD!, cannot wait anymore................. This dvd had much more sound elements in the mix than the 1st 2. Had to set my main speakers to large. Played this at near reference levels last night. General LFE: Battle over Corucent - Bass in the opening sequence was ssooo heavy, as, the camera pans down to a republic destroyer, the throbbing bass is mingled with the lows for the destroyer's engine bottomed out my sub. This mix IS actually more complex, there are many hidden sound effects happening at the same time. Saber fights 1) OBi 1 & anakin with count dooku, decent bass here, though not as aggressive as other scence, 2)OBI 1 With GG, there seems to be a light feel to the saber clashes, simialr to that heard in the cinema. 3)Climatic duel Ani and Obi, bass is very strong here, be careful . Danger scenes Volcanic planet Mustafa, has really lots of low frequency. The exploding volcanic landscape delivers system threatening SPLs when played at the SAME level as with the rest of the show. As this is a complex mix, there are multiple sound effects here, with the competion of Saber clashes, punches, molten lava hitting metal, MUSIC ... My system when set to 90Hz xo, everything seems mushed together. Dialogue is good, but a little inconsistent. Overall For this dvd levels have to be set to obtain "listenable" levels. Like, your sub can bottom out on extreme sequences and yet , you can't get bass from a simple saber duel.... There seems to be a problem with the midrange. Its not there! (Well , at least from my much less than perfect system) Overall, this is a good mix but I guess only the very best speakers, subs , amps and receivers can bring out its glory. Enjoy................ :D The surrounds were very heavy with

Remembered the light saber duels on EPIII at the cinemas had really wimpy bass compared to EPI and II. And this problem is pretty widespread in cinemas TAP approved across the US. Some forums are claiming a big blunder at the studios. Can anyone (lucky ones) with the DVD concurr? Would be a let down for this dvd :(

Opening scene of BB. there's a continous low LFE goin to the sub. Overloaded my sub, played it at 2dB below reference levels and my sub bottomed out. Have to re-calibrate the system again. On one very loud dream sequence my centre channel went "pop" ??? ??? I changed my cross over back to large fronts, recalibrated, "pop" stilll there but sub and dialogue much better. Last time I calibrated the system was with Flight of the Phoenix :'( SVS owner's with larger subs should not be too concerned , but the smaller ones calibrated to the edge , be careful with this one. HT :)

Flight of the Phoenix - R1 in DTS
HT replied to desray's topic in Movies - Box Office, Blu-ray Releases etc.
The sandstorm scene is quite aggressive. With early settings on my fronts, the bass overloaded on this scene overloaded them. After re-calibrating my setup. Now I can play this scene at near reference levels. Very good infrasonics . Only a well calibrated system will take this DVD at near ref levels. HT ;D -
Seems like this release from Outlaw will definitely be a threat to the big guns like HALO, THETA and LEX A full review here. http://www.prillaman.net/990_review.htm (BTW: this unit unlike its pre-decesser the 950 is made in KOREA) ;D

Saw it last nite too. I must say , of all the SW films, EP3 is the one that had me thinking most after the film, - Is Mace Windu a powerful jedi or is he also a victim of the sith where he succumbs to "anti-jedi" tactics and very much responsible for the downfall of the Jedi knights ? - Who IS Darth Tyranus? who also recruited Jungo Fett? - Why did Count Dooku looked so suprised in ATOC when Mace beheaded Jungo (not a Jedi trait")? Attachments that lead to the DARK side. - Anakin's weakeness is the LOVE for Padme'. - Mace's WEAKNESS? is in the LOVE of ................... the REPUBLIC?. Quote abt Anakin RTOS - Pade' "There is still good in him. EP6 - Luke " I sense the good in u father...." SPOLIER !!!!!!(Do read if you have not watched!!!) Similaritiers on VADER'S actions EP6- Luke " Father , Please...... " looking on a weaker being (Luke) " Vader removes Emporer RTOS - Palpatine, Help me, ........ Anakin removes MW. Both of which leading to Anakin ending up helping the weaker... And much more.........

Its actually similar to those found on exotics high end Pre Pros, it compensates for any delay in the dialogue "on screen" should a device like a "Line doubler or quadrupler " be inserted in the video chain.

Wow :o Looks tempting. May decide to hold my Processor plans till this guy arrives . At abt 3k , it is retailing abt the price of the older flagships like the AZ-1 , but if it has more adjustability and features , it is worth considering .

FLIGHT OF THE PHEONIX (Bass) Made me change my XO .
HT replied to HT's topic in Home Cinema General Discussion
Hi: The mix on this is deliberately made on the HOTTER side, at playback reference levels it is really ssystem damaging. It would be interesting to challenge most subs. The LFE content on the sand storm is quite impressively put together, there is a supplement on this in the extras on the bass. Though my sub has a built-in limiter, I am worried abt it with the new settings. I am sure the larger SVS (PB 12 or 16-46??) here should be able to take the demands at near or even ref levels. http://www.guidetohometheater.com/moviereviews/305flight/ Any SVS owner care to cotribute a playback review ? Hi: I have pretty large front channels , originally I have the cross over on the fronts at 60Hz, as they go down to abt 55Hz. Watched FOTP , there are a few scenes that BOTTOMED out my fronts!! :'( Was playing at -9dB 1) The crash sequence, my right front channel woofer went "pop" a few times. 2) Expolosion where the BBQ sparks ignited the spare fuel, "poped" the woofer again Changed my crossover to 90Hz, dropped the ref level by 2 dB , problem solved. B careful on the ref volume on this one. It is system damaging!!! Anyone with this problem? HT
