I'm only getting stereo from HBO GO (via shield) ? will have to get the disc later then. story now makes much more sense... although there are quite a few fats that could be cut, to make it more like 3 hrs. and he removed totally the Blackpink video ? (sorry couldn't resist ? ) -
my normal 15m copper cable has been here for more than 14 years already, no issue at all. 3D, 4K, whatever, all work fine. why ppl use fiber ? it's by and large plastic, and needs an active circuit to convert. just that conversion chip can fail due to heat or static. what's wrong with simple passive copper cable ??

bro boxerfan88 I'm with you. that Henry Litton QC article you quoted is very nicely written. Thanks for the link. "The One Country Two Systems formula was designed to last for 50 years and no more. Hence Article 5 of the Basic Law. There is no mechanism in the Basic Law for the system to continue beyond 30 June 2047." "All the calls for Freedom, Democracy etc have no meaning if the common law crumbles." HKers despise and look down on China on almost every aspect, just like many members in this thread. And yet eventually they will be ruled by China just like another province. They cannot swallow this fate. Did you see some protesters showing banners "We are British Nationals without Right of Abode", "We are born British National", with a big picture of that "British National (Overseas)" passport picture. They really hate China to the core. (btw all those expensive BNO passports in the end were totally pointless. all countries treat BNO and SAR passports as equivalent) With a fate like this, what should HKers really do ? "If the protesters truly value their professed aims, their focus should be on demonstrating to Beijing and to the rest of the world that the One Country Two Systems formula works, and to promote an atmosphere in which Beijing feels comfortable with the system – and when the time comes, to extend the Basic Law for another 50 years, 100 years. Then liberal democratic norms and values might have a chance to flourish." Wise words. I would even add "maybe by then, some revolution can happen in China and democracy finally arrives at the middle kingdom". I bet this could the message Lam trying to tell in the proposed "close door dialog with protesters". i.e. "look the elephant in the room is obvious, no one likes to be ruled by China; now how do we solve this ? you want to start a revolution ?" It's China's duty to ensure one-country-2-system work, really ? If you are the ruler of China, why should you ? Really, why should you even bother ? The CCP even survived all the atrocities and turmoil from the 50es, do you think CCP needs HK, especially now, when HK is merely 3% of the GDP ? HK now is only mainly used for offshore financing hub for China. CCP can always find another financial center for such business, no need HK. If you are genuinely concerned and sympathetic to HKers, please send them that article and ask them to calm down, and ask them exactly what they want to achieve , is it : 1) to start a revolution to "democratize" China ? then go ahead, prepare for sacrifice; sure all the violence part and parcel of a revolution; 2) to ensure current system works as it is intended ? then stop the absurd violence, meaningless demands that you know CCP is never going to accept Right now what they are doing, is damaging HK themselves, and by doing so they demand China to "feel bad and therefore relax the rule" ? How absurd is that ?

xxmp is one thing, size of the sensor still quite far behind a real camera, no ? 1/2in or 1/2.5in sensor compared to 1in sensor. plus OIS

Pioneer 4K player coming
c7221624705751 replied to askarmelayu's topic in Home Cinema General Discussion
so you also confirmed Pio failed in chroma resolution. in 4:2:2 pio did not upsample the chroma channel leaving it to the display. although i'm very surprised RGB works better. In order to do RGB, it must 1st upsample to 4:4:4. something weird is happening in the algo here. -
I dun want to say "I told you so" but I remember saying "what if the hyped auto tone mapping fails to live up to expectation" :) If I read your comments correctly, JVC is using the static metadata to do re-mapping ? btw do you have Meg 4k ? the max is 10,000 nits if I remember correctly. You are really supposed to be glared. See how JVC tone map this ? Frame by frame dynamic tone mapping is almost like a frame by frame re-encode, not to mention there are plenty of incorrectly flagged metadata. It's not a simple map lookup. Are you beginning to become a believer that such ops should be done at source ? htpc or a SoC player ? (because it can store the previous frame/look ahead the next frame to compute/guesstimate the proper range) It's almost like old dvd days, plenty of encoding errors/shortcomings requires player to do line by line correction by itself ("chroma upsampling error" and "motion adaptive compensation" remember). Actually just taking out the tone mapping "feature" that doesn't work, the JVC N is still a good 4k PJ. Now it's a fairer comparism between this and the Sony 4ks. You can then talk about contrast, brightness, sharpness, motion handling, etc. One thing I personally felt is, Sony is somehow sharper than JVC, and somehow has smoother motion than JVC, but JVC has higher contrast.

Pioneer 4K player coming
c7221624705751 replied to askarmelayu's topic in Home Cinema General Discussion
you got a LX500 is it ? is SG pricing "competitive" ? Pioneer player always has very good built. But the loading is known to be slow. Is the loading speed improved ? Btw Pioneer used to have this reputation of being "very sharp" and "very strong color" in dvd/ld days. Particularly the perception of sharpness. Sometimes it's actually due to the way its chroma decoding/upsampling. Some say it is a bit artificially enhanced. do you see any ? I see multiple reviews mentioning LX500/800 failing the chroma zone resolution, and recommending using 4:2:2 as the best output for the player and let your PJ to do the full chroma channel. -

well the Pioneer LX800 could beat Oppo for 2 channel. Look at its mechanical built (and the ESS ES9026PRO) : https://www.playit.hk/20181022-pioneer_lx800/ (This should be available locally. $$$) HDR tone mapping/"optimizer" aside, the problem with oppo (video wise) is the chroma resolution. The pioneer/panny all tested to have better chroma channel than oppo. This seems to be hardware limited (2 tap vs multi tap) -

very long time ago, B&W does FPMs (Flat Panel Monitors)... one of the better sounding flat speakers then (at the time, much better than the Def Tech), especially the mid range -

Yes the LX500 is a worthy contender; has it been tested on the chroma upsampling resolution and HDR tone mapping/"optimizer" functionality ? (btw I'm only looking at this for video). I value build quality a lot. The way how the chasis is formed, how the loader is placed, how the heat is routed, etc, is more than just assembling a few boards together. There have long been assertions that a stable disc loader leads to precision in transport even for digital media. signal interference happens all the time at board level. Proper engineering design aims to minimize it. I'm a firm believer in this. -

Let me give you a complete rundown of both. I have used both extensively. 1st the 980, then the xiaomi. If you are impatient, just read this: forget the 980. get the xiaomi. cost is *not* a factor for me. problem with the 980: 1) stupid algorithm. very frequently duplicating paths. always needs to go back to base several times during a cleaning as if it has to go back to starting point to "ascertain" something. So you see it goes to and fro on same path several times. The algo is also so "advanced" that it cleans half of a room 1st, then go somewhere else, clean another half a room there, then return to base, then go to the old room and do the other half. 2) due to 1), unable to clear tight corners, and some areas not covered for no reason. I have one small corridor that is just 2 inches bigger than the unit, for the 980, it *sometimes* can clean, *sometimes* it will miss. not consistent at all. And some corners in the room, for no reason, sometimes it skips altogether. 3) very noisy after a while. you will hate it. I think just after a few weeks of use. 4) battery needs replacement very quickly. (mine was 10 months) 5) "taller" than xiaomi, so some corners cannot go under, whereas xiaomi can. 6) "mapping" app is silly. no real time update of the map (so you dun know what has been done, what has not). only has the map when the job is finished; and even then you may not see the map because constant "cloud problem". 7) get stuck easily and can't recover. say you put a chair in this position when it does the 1st pass (it frequently does 2 passes due to the stupid algorithm), 5 mins later you move the chair due to some reason, the 980 will get confused, and the whole mapping is haywired. It will be totally lost and repeat all paths and spend 2 full hours circling around. 8 ) it needs light to work. and for some reason, the brighter the room, the better the mapping. when the room is dim, it takes much longer to complete the job, and some times it does not complete. (how stupid is that ?) 9) keep on losing wifi connection (so you will not be able to see map and job status.. anyway nothing to see in the app anyway, useless app). and once wifi connection is lost, you need to re-setup the wifi connection (it's not a reconnect. it's a re-setup !) Note this has nothing to do with wifi signal strength. it seems the robot can just totally lose the wifi setup. good thing about xiaomi over the 980: 1) mapping algorithm is much better. almost never duplicate paths. (I can tell what it is doing and I think its algo is much better.) 2) due to 1), it is able to clear tight corners and cover all areas , the job is very consistent. the same tight corridor mentioned above, xiaomi has *never* failed even once in clearing it. 3) again the profile of xiaomi is slightly lower, able to go under many places 4) still noisy, but more bearable than the 980 5) never has any wifi issue 6) cleaning map update is real time, you can see where it has covered and where it has not 7) it doesn't need light to work. can run in total darkness. no change in how fast it runs with lights on or not. 8 ) recovery from "obstructed path" is much better than the 980. (still not perfect though, but because of the way xiaomi's algo works, it inherently is better in this regard). 9)battery life is also better. ok some areas xiaomi is weaker : 1) curtains. it really has a hard time dealing with curtains. takes a bit of time to navigate along (It treats it as an object). the 980 simply barge through. 2) dustbin size. xiaomi needs to clean dustbin like every 2-3 days. the 980 can run for a week at least. Lastly, if you want to compare "vacuum power" : I think no difference on hard floors. Ang mo reviews say 980 vacuum better on carpets, I never try, cannot tell. To me the main problem of the 980 is its stupid algo and the noise. Go for xiaomi, no brainer.

the only real selling point of JVC is the auto-tone mapping. (apart from price). ... there are so much hype on this... at one point you may wonder, what if it doesn't deliver... Today I feel the Sony 4Ks are doing very well, something you have a real sample to see. tone mapping can be done in player... I read lots of good stuff on Panasonic players' "HDR Optimizer".... that is not an expensive player.. btw this year for me it'll probably be the screen (change of fabric only if possible...) -
yes I meant HDR->SDR+BT2020. SDR+BT2020 is not a standard, but Oppo does it, and my question is really: is the Sony projector being fed a SDR+BT2020 looks better than being fed original HDR? Especially since Oppo can let you specify the max nits your PJ can do, theoretically it should work. I read many PJs handle SDR+BT2020 poorly with all sorts of wield results (like clipping it at Rec709 levels). I wonder any members here can comment if your Sony (and JVC) can handle it properly. DH: did you try feeding oppo directly to the PJ (while doing the HDR->SDR+BT2020) ? Could it be the marantz avr that is confused by the input and is messing it up ? Panasonic "HDR optimizer" sounds cool, seems to be doing the right thing. Oppo guys should be able to do it too... (I hope)

Thx my pioneer is going strong :) Haven't seen Z9F, but the Z9D still feels a bit like monitor; maybe because my eyes are too used to the plasma feel. There is a certain fluid/organic sense of the picture that theses new LCD/OLED panels (that use refresh rate, no matter how fast) still cannot give. -

quite a while back , way before the hype (before even the idea of a movie) , I "discovered" this book... hilarious story and very close to home. I think I recommended this in the "book review" thread but ppl dismissed it as just junk. Glad to see it being made into a movie. Thanks to Kelvin's direct involvement, a couple of new lines/jokes are added in the movie, but as always, the book is much better. Btw Kitty Pong has a much bigger role in the subsequent books, I hope Fiona Xie can seize some opportunity. Will be interesting to see who will play "Colette", the center of China Rich Girlfriend ... and since this is not hwz or mothership, I'm going to say this: this film is very positive for Singapore. It's a very nice advertisement for us, and it lifts the image of Singapore. SG looks so pretty, so "happening". Anyone who has not visited SG, after watching this, will feel the urge to pay this place a visit. -
