So I usually use basic contact spray

But with my bias adjusted but unlevel channels I decided to use the deoxit from Jaycar (the twin pack)

I was not aware it was so greasy (mineral oil) and thought it was more evaporative like contact spray and I may have overdone it a touch. I followed up with the Gold.

Now my Sansui has a very distorted left channel that was not there before. I only waited an hour or so before powering up.

Is it possible this may be a an issue with residue that may resolve itself?

The caps all look good, it was playing fine this morning before the deoxit????

Any help please?

Try putting a piece of cloth around the pot base and then blow it with compressed air from one of those cans.

But wait till others comment as this is just a quick fix thought on my part.

Forgot to mention that I also put new thermal paste on the heatsink and output transistors, Could that have had an effect?

Hello Earth man,

I would say very possibly, with no  electrical knowledge.  I had a very scratchy volume pot which I overloaded with Deoxit. I then had sound quality problems, frequency response anomalies. I ended up having the pot fully disassembled and correctly cleaned. My sound then returned to normal.  Yeah I would be very suspicious of the effects of too much Deoxit. No idea what the best route from here is, much simpler with a single pot.

Good luck

But how to flush the deoxit? If thats the cause.

The twin pack is for contact treatment and is not really suitable for potentiometer use - there is a larger single can deoxit treatment that is better/more suited, or the contact cleaner/lubricant from Richard Foot or Servicesol.

It can be difficult to flush out the insides of a pot without removing the shaft lubricant. Any treatment should be limited to a very short spray, just a touch should be all that is needed. Did you just do the bias adjustment trim pots, or the front panel pots as well?

What model Sansui?

Were the mica insutators in good condition when you replaced the thermal paste, and what type of paste did you use?

Cheers

John

I actually didn't use the deoxit on the bias, but I did use it on the volume/balance, Input selector, Loudness button, and Speaker selector.

Its a Sansui 8080db

The mica insutators looked fine, the thermal grease is just called Heatsink Compound 'thermal conductive grease' R001 made by chemtools.

Thanks for your interest John.

I am considering flushing out with a standard contact cleaner, will this be the best strategy do you think? I could then use Faderlube if I have removed too much lubricant, yes???

If it were me

a. problem = oil inside pots

b.  flush the pots with a solvent that is able to dissolve the oil and carry it out leaving no residue eg white spirits

d. Id do it outside on a windy day due to the fumes danger in a fire proof spot and use absorbent paper towels to soak up the yuk and repeat it 10x

e. leave if for a day in the sun to dry out

f. then have a listen and replace the pots

O.K So...

After lots of research, help from you all, and a conversation with CAIG Labrotories (makers of Deoxit) I went to Jaycar and purchased some isopropyl alcohol in a spray from, as well as some electrical clean and lube, both made by Servisol (apparently same ingredients as Deoxit D5).

Deoxit contains isopropyl alcohol and I was instructed to give the pots some Isporopyl alcohol, then wait an hour and follow up with Deoxit D5. They assured me this would remove the conductive material as well as oily residue, and that the D5 would lubricate post flush.

When I got home I decided to use the Servisol electrical clean and Lube (D5) on the bias trim pots, as when I was adjusting them last I noticed they would drift up, I gave the tiniest squirt - worked the pot back and forth, set the bias on both channels (1 had drifted from 30 to 45) and low and behold no more distortion on the left channel, both channels now even.

Yay!!! Yay!!! Yay!!!

I've been playing it for three hours now and all is well.

All this was to get it in order to sell, I should have left that to the buyer.

Thanks to all of you who contributed.
