Couple of other questions regarding living with a Dev more than it's performance

  • I know the supplied remote is RF. Can I control it with a Logitech universal remote?
  • Can you rename inputs to make family friendly? Couldn't see a way to do so on the Configuarator, but I haven't registered a devise...

Short answer, no and no.

Long answer - the Logitech universal remote is infrared and the Dev is radio. One of the super expensive Harmonies might if it also has a  radio transmitter.

You can access the configurator if you create a login on the Devialet website. There is no scope to rename inputs on the Expert series.

Simple functions can be operated via phone app, on/off volume and input, also direct play from phone.

Also found this when I searched the Logitech website;

"

Devialet le expert 120

This device was not found in the Harmony database

If this device is operated using an infrared (IR) remote control, Harmony may be able to learn the command in order to control it. Learn more about adding a device that's not found in the Harmony database.

We also recommend double-checking the manufacturer (Devialet) and model number (le expert 120) that was entered. Learn more about finding your device's model number."

Thanks,

That is a deal breaker for me I'm afraid. My RF Harmony doesn't actually send RF commands, it only sends IR commands via RF to it's blasters.

I know there is the phone app, but I hate using phone apps for streaming, never mind something as easy as volume control.

It is very simple to rename the inputs. You   Type over the existing name in the configuration.

Didn't realise that.

I am curious why there would be a need to re name inputs. Is there something very different in a Dev to other amplifiers in this respect?

Makes it easier for the family. I have one for the tv, CD player, Antipodes rather than toggling through it is clearer.

Not for me but my wife and kids. I thought being such a computer orientated device, it should be an easy feature to implement, and it appears it is. But the remote issue makes it a moot point for me.

I also found it surprising that the remote often required a 2nd press to get the Dev to turn on or change inputs. Being RF I was hoping I could use it in the kitchen whilst cooking, but the range appears to only be around 6-7m

Something not right.

My D200 always responds to a single press. Even more than 20m and several internal walls away.

My internal walls are plasterboard over 100mm thick aerated concrete.

Could  it possibly be batteries that are nearly flat?

Having said that I've had the D200 for nearly 4 years and still on the original remote batteries.

If I were you I would wait for a 200 to come up second hand. They do come up and it will give you more flexibility with subwoofer and more power. You won't need to pay much more than the demonstration unit. In terms of remote I haven't had any problems but have noticed it is sensitive.

Thanks. I think I could get a 2nd hand 200 for a fair bit less than the demo unit actually. I know the last one went for closer to 5k on here, but the remote issue is a big one to overcome. I'm looking for an all in 1 primarily for ease of use and already have a premium Harmony to make input selection easy. The requirement of 2 remotes would make my wife's eyes roll back in her head...

Have people that demo'ed 120 vs 200 found the sound much different? I don't need the extra power, but a fuller sound signature would be of benefit.

The original D-Premier did take Infrared so if you can find one of those you can have your cake and eat it too ;)

As for the difference between 120 and 200; When I bought mine it was still a 170. Then when the new firmware magically turned it into a 200 there was no change in the sound as such but the extra power made it sound fuller at lower volumes. Going to 900 Watt per channel with the Original d' Atelier again gained more clarity and warmth at lower volumes than at higher volumes. (on my Dynaudio C1's that is)

@blybo

I spent hours to program a Harmony remote for wife and kids - only to go back to the normal remotes. Sold the Harmony.

Others may differ.

Also not a fan of the Harmony remote.

But a big fan of the Devialet remote. The best remote that I've ever used.

I've owned 2 Harmony remotes and I ended up selling them. I have simplfied things right down to their basics so I don't need a remote at all now in my listening space.

@blybo How are you planning to control the laptop/player/server?

Roon on my wife's iMac, controlled via iPad or iPhone

My living room is also a TV room so the remote turns on TV, Foxtel box, and controls volume on my Elektra gear, and inputs on the DAC, but input selection on the pre is still manual, as is on/off, that's why my family won't use it.

It looks cool, but can't see why people love it soo much, it doesn't work with every press and has limited range. My Logitech will control my volume etc from my kitchen some 14m away, the Dev one gives up half way there...

I am not a huge fan of the remote either as you cant see what the button press /dial turn has done whereas on the app it is very clear.

I guess it depends on what the family will want to use the Dev for, but if its primarily for music then its all doable from a phone or tablet and you are there anyway. If they can do that then they may be able to change inputs etc occaisionally if required.

My kids will use multiple remotes to wrangle music movies , game consoles to do what they want. My wife struggles with one remote to watch tv

This 'smart' remote replaced the Harmony at our place.

The remote has a nice heavy tactile feel about it. I love the old school big dial! In practice though, i only ever use the Devialet Remote as a secondary remote. 99% of the time i'll use the app from anywhere in the house to turn the unit on, select input and volume. I'll then swipe over to either the sonos app or roon and select my tune. Couldn't be easier. When i'm sitting down on the couch though, it's nice to have the app on my iphone/ipad showing so i can see the volume level whilst turning the wheel on the Dev remote. Nice having several ways to do something.

I think one of the biggest let downs with the Devialet, is the basic nature of the app. They really need to update the app so that you can control all basic functions like bass/treble SAM % etc direct from the app. I reckon once the streamer board is released there will be an update of the app. It's been needed for a long time.

Well after finally buying a devialet 120 a couple of days ago and discovering this thread I got excited. Two and a bit hours later..reading 17 pages..I have dead set forgotten what I wanted to ask.

I am now more confused than ever...did I buy the right amp? Is it what I need? Will my sub work? What was my initial question/questions, queries??

:emot-bang:

Might get back to this tomorrow after having a sleep...the price you pay for being a newbie I guess.
