On reboot, It normally asks you to accept the license/agreement or something and click on no. I think it then reverts back.

What amazes me is that Microsoft think that they have the legal right to essentially take over your computer and install a product that you haven't asked for or want.

I realise there are a lot of tech heads on this forum who just love this sort of thing but I don't.  I like 7 and it does everything I want of it and I'd like to keep using it until Microsoft withdraw support for it (which probably won't be too long, on the basis that 'we offered you 10').

What about all the costs that people are incurring because their printer drivers don't work any more?

very true Bronal. for me its the annoyance of loosing the morning from being able to use my computer and get on with things. like yourself for a work laptop my needs are pretty basic really. i dont need the update. am pretty utilitarian when comes to work computers. as long as does the job ...

so glad I jumped ship 7ish years ago.

We still have to use windows for point of sale and wholesale. In our office the servers is still hanging in there... but only just. We use remote desktop from each Mac computer to use the windows software but otherwise happy on Mac hardware and software. We had a virtual windows machine (pos software) upgrade to Win 10 on us without my permission recently. Thankfully it went okay.

we put our htpc out on the nature strip for hard rubbish collection last year.... still stuck with a pc netbook "midget" as we call it for the stuff that we have to rarely do PC based ... mainly around updates audyssey pro etc... that all it gets used for ...otherwise for last 10 year we have been mac based.

AMAZINGLY our 2007 macbook still works flawlessly  ! great for web surfing emails browsing etc. and our 2011 macbook pro gets on with most other stuff. none of this forced update business !

anyways work laptop is up and going post update. bit slow... but its still loading some stuff in the background updating settings etc. will grb some lunch and get back into things work wise !  so far so good.

Glad it's worked out. My Macbook is the only newish computer here, we 5 old iMacs from around 2010 still going strong as work stations and used for graphic design at times, still plenty fast enough. The only newer iMac was a replacement for a stolen one and only doing POS duties and older one was performing perfectly till the shop break in some 18 months ago.

Windows 10 does not install itself. However, they give you two clear options of Install Now or Install Later, where you would normally expect one of those buttons to be Close or No Thanks.

This is deception and I think would catch out many, many people, particularly those with old eyes.

I suspect in my rush to get into and get started on working this morning have hit one of these by accident. it could have also been a click on something I was working on and while the infernal pop up that I have been avoiding was coming on screen. accepting it when was clicking on my work. I saw no acknowledgement asked either

as in are you sure you want to install this now or later or what ever. gee a new operating system isn't exactly something you do with one clicks ?????.

I can tell you this much with some of my work I do for this to happen as it did could have put me in quite a pickle stuck with a room full of people and a pc thats unresponsive and everyone really just wanting to get on with things. screwed up my morning but could have been a lot worse !

Get this with the windows 10 popup if you dismiss the upgrade popup by clicking the x in the top right corner this sends the message to Microsoft that you WANT to install Windows 10 and the upgrade will begin.

Shady as all hell...

It isn't giving you any choice - just 'now' or 'later'.  There is no way out.

If you postpone, you have to remember to be logged on when it starts up again,.otherwise you know what happens...gotcha!.

'Old eyes' be damned.  It is an underhand and arrogant way for a reputable company to behave.

Hmm, not so sure about that. I got the popup this morning (for the umpteenth time), clicked on the x, and it went away, as usual. Hasn't started upgrading.

You do have to be very careful where you click though. If you hover the cursor over the popup, you will see that the area covered by the x is really quite small, whereas most of the rest of the popup seems to allow for an acceptance click. It would be very easy to inadvertently accept the upgrade by not getting the cursor positioned exactly in the x box.

I would like to see one of those 'do not bother me again' options in this popup.

Might it have something to do with the version of Windows you are running, perhaps?

I am running Windows 7 Professional Edition on my desktop PC.

I must have done something right will configuration my Win7, never had even the popup.

I had the popup for weeks and always cancelled it with the X, until I remembered GRC and found their little fixit.

But Microsoft need to be investigated by the ACCC for being a pack of bastards.

They will say that you agreed to the ULA..........................I read it a long time ago but I don't recall them saying they could force us into an unwanted upgrade.

(I bet they updated it somewhere along the line and later versions are deemed as read and agreed to)

Maybe an amendment contained in an update to 7 somewhere along the line, but I'm not up on how they might approach such a thing.

I go from this machine (shitbox) Win 10 to the big rig upstairs Win 7 and the difference is stark.

I'm thinking I may eventually dual boot and use Win7 for entertainment and general stuff I do, and Ubuntu for internet surfing.

That way I don't even need a net connection on win7 once It's activated..

Oh, damn! games need a a connection these days :(

Windows 10 is better than Windows 8/8.1................but Windows 7 is better than all of them.

unfortunately with all the updates recently  windows 7 is a lot like 10 these days not looks wise but under the hood
