lonewolf Posted May 27, 2016 Posted May 27, 2016 Hey guys, I have been given permission to convert the garage into a HT room. I have some people coming over to do some mods and paint the room. Is there any type of specific paint or colour i should be aiming for? It will have a projector as well as a TV in there. I was told generally dark colours are good as something about they make the projector image look brighter? Is there a specific type i should also aim for? Probably will be going to Masters / bunnings in an hour to purchase it.
Mr 57 Posted May 27, 2016 Posted May 27, 2016 Hi LW, when I had my home theatre painted (10x5x3) it was done in the heritage red with black ceiling. It worked well with projector mounted to the ceiling. Good luck with it all !
cdave Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 Dark red walls mixed to match the darkest colour of the curtains and matt black ceiling and front wall. The black paint was for theater sets and looks a really deep solid black when watching the projector but marks very easily, so definitely not for traffic areas. Sent from my SM-T520 using Tapatalk
Kaynin Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 Certainly the darker the colour the better the performance of your image. I went dark brown on the walls and ceiling, broken by white cornices. A dark ceiling is ultra important, light colours are like mirrors for lighting, especially in front of the screen. Also, we went a matt finish, this has better light absorption, but is harder to keep clean/with scuff marks. 1
lonewolf Posted June 2, 2016 Author Posted June 2, 2016 Thanks for the advice guys, what do people feel about colouring the skirting on the ceiling. The skirting on walls / floor connection is white and looks quite nice i think with black paint walls and white skirting. I was wondering if my ceiling and walls were black, maybe it would be good to also have the skirting on the ceiling to be white so it will sort of match the white skirting on the floor....? what do you guys think? So then the ceiling and walls are black and the skirtings both at the top and bottom of the walls are white so it sort of provides a nice contrast. Questions was can a small area like the skirting area on the ceiling still negatively affect the visual advantages of a dark wall / ceiling for a Home Theatre room? As in i know the dark colour is meant to absorb and not reflect light etc, but then would the white skirting affect it even though its quite a small portion? P.S I have noticed that matte walls really do scuff very easily

We have 9 foot ceilings, so we believe it's to good effect - No, I don't believe it has a negative impact that would affect performance of your image. 1
lonewolf Posted June 2, 2016 Author Posted June 2, 2016 Cool, thats what i was aiming for as well. Shame they had already painted mine black with the really expensive paint before we realised that white contrast would work so well. It was onloy after they attached the white skirting on the floor that we realised how nice it looked.

Dennis Erskine has been known to make them light blue (creates a nice ambiance on all accounts): "Here's the mix numbers using Olympic Interior Latex Flat Base 3 (72003). 101 0 Y 6/48 102 3 Y 6/48 115 2 Y 2/48 113 1 Y 12/48"
Kaynin Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 Nice, beautiful ceiling. I wonder if the performance would improve if he went the night sky option... 1
