I cleared one room out with my Mrs Mills on a usb stick and then told the guy to bugger off with his led Zep and dsotm and DS snorefests and think about thinking outside the dominant paradigm at these events which is old boring middle aged men muzak.

He wasn't overly enthused but a quick flick of his ph found a track that blew him away and a couple of punters right out the door into the hallway.

Sierra knows the track... he thought his power amp had imploded when it was played at his place and djb thought his wardrobe doors had shorted out when he heard it on his system

Some of the requests from whining punters and the resulting music was also room clearing. I'm happy not to hear other people's stuff.

Go to their bricks+ mortar stores if you want to hear your tasty stuff,I reckon.

Congratulations to all the exhibitors, it must be a huge effort to setup a room and deal with hundreds of punters going through their room every day.

I remember the dark decades where we didn't have a hifi show in Melbourne at all. So to all the knockers, go easy on the guys exhibiting they are trying their best and we (I) want them back next year.

My favorite room was Warwick's, I really liked the Gauder Akustik's,

To the punters

1. If you need to talk, please go outside to the hall.

2. Be polite and say thanks to the exhibitors. They are really trying hard and this type of event is very taxing. I saw some quite rude behaviour.

That's an important point. On Saturday afternoon, during the Atmos demo (the room where they played a portion from Oblivion), we were thanked for attending, so I naturally thanked them for putting on the demo. It was appreciated, noting it was the first thanks they'd received for the day.

There was a lot of work put into that demo, with lined walls, etc.

thats is such an important point indeed. I suspect hardly any realise here just what effort it would take to let alone setup a full atmos setup in a hotel room (think of all the amps and speakers and cabling)... let alone then a projection setup...  hd and uhd capable streaming setup, ....calibrate it all do what you can with the room...and then also have a top end 2ch also setup in the room working off multiple source !  no mean feat !

with regards grumps on music and volume. these are such personal preference things it would be hard I imagine for those demonstrating to please everyone. can always ask for volume to be lowered ...if too loud for your tastes. same go with the music used...ask for something else or bring your own...whcih some might oblige ... given the risk :D

For me, the "I could happily live with this system" feeling was unequivocally attached to the JBL/Classe system put together by Convoy.  It was acknowledged by the presenter (CEO Convoy) that the system was very different to the B and W one next door.............and it was.

I like music to sound live, real and visceral.  The JBL's delivered and I'm more than happy to be a Philistine and embrace the gutsy chest-thumping "thereness" of the JBL's in preference to any refined nuances the B and W's might claim as their raison d'etre.

Edit: typo...............and i wanted to add that there were several other rooms that really impressed, but I'll leave it until tomorrow to comment further.

I was a big fan of that room as well. Something about the way the JBLs effortlessly delivered a muscular and relaxed sound... I'm starting to understand the allure of the JBL..

I was in the Melbourne Hifi room listening to some Kef speakers. A few guys asked whether the larger Kefs their could be played, or even the little LS50's which I know sound great, The reply was that they (Melb Hifi) were only allowing the one set of speakers to be played? Did someone order to much of the one model or something? or did some of you guys hear some music played through some of the other model Kef's as well?

Sounds a lot like Melbourne Hi Fi. They have a way of doing things that is different from anybody else

Yeah, I've got an old pair of Klipsch Belles with upgraded timber horns and higher quality mid and trable drivers and adjustable extreme slope crossovers.  They should theoretically be able to deliver this type of sound, but I took a respite from trying to set them up properly a few years ago and never got back to them.  They sit forlornly in the shed trying to at least look nice.

Must revisit when I get time as I'd love the get them at least hinting at the sort of sound those JBL's produced with such consummate ease,

They were the ones playing when I was there a couple of times.  They were not doing the KEF name any favours.

Yeah the Kef representative seemed a bit upset about it. and rightly so.

I don't think I've got any photos of equipment that haven't been done better by others, but here are a couple of random happy snaps that I took before I got worried this dude called Leeroy might think I was stalking him. ;)

I think Leeroy was from France..................    We could ask Sierra, who was sitting next to him.  Bear72 was assuming his rightful place in the back corner while Keith was having one of his rare naps in front next to Mr Luc de France.

L to R in the corridor Addicted to Music (Peter) , Froggie Luc, Joz and the little wimpy guy on the right is Yamaha Man.

Please don't tell YM I said that!

Edit - self preservation ;)

Oh, How could I forget the ever-smiling Father Jack (Dave Thompson) in the back towards the right in the first shot?

Like many have said here I thought it was a very well organised event and I had a great time - way to go Marc and other organisers.

The rooms/setups that i enjoyed the most were the JBL room (for me it was very musical, effortless and very engaging), the Osborne rooms and the Quad room.   It's been a long time since i've heard their stats and they've come a long way.

A number of the systems sounded to too 'hi-fi' to me (a lot of detail) but many of us have different preferences for sound presentation types.

I do think that a lot of it though comes down to what was playing at the time and the SPLs.  It's hard to judge the quality of what you're hearing unless familiar with the material.

Did anyone remember hearing a Julie London album?  I think it may have been in the JBL room - Sounded brilliant.  If anyone knows the album pls mention it.

Two points that may be worth considering here - because the same was asked about the Harbeth 40.2 speakers in our room (and we had the same reply). We knew the 40.2s would under-perform big time in the room we had, so it would be insanity to play them. The smaller speakers we exhibited at 1/3 the price would sound better (in our room). Also, even 30 seconds without music can clear a room of people (and potential prospects), so a speaker change involving minutes at a time can be detrimental.

I liked the harbeth lavardin? combo being demoed...so plan worked I'd say :)

The Number 1 standout room, audibly and clearly light years ahead of all others -The TELOS Room.

Crazy Con was a man on a mission, in complete control of the remote control, he was King of all proceedings!  This room was his show and he was in familiar territory, his serfs obeying his every utterance. :)

To the sound, WOW!!!  The new Doehmann TT was simply excellent, but then they rolled out the tape on a 40yr + old R2R machine.  I ask - just how have we audio officiando' been hood winked so completely by the marketing machine, re this supposed 'progress' of the digital era? ??

At 15 inches/ sec, I experienced Led Zepplin like never even imagined before.  It was astonishing, a real treat - and I dislike Led Zepplin!  How can that happen?  Well, it was just so dam good!  After 10 min, Con turned off the tape.   He bellowed, "What now boys?"  "More, we want more of that," was the common cry" from us, the great unwashed.  With a smirk on his face, maybe it was a grin like a cheshire cat, he again turned on the Studer and cranked up the SPL level to boot.  It was like throwing meat scraps to a pack of starving hyenas!  Oh yes, Con just loved it, theatre in motion, superbly pulled off.  Then more tape, Louis Armstrong doing 'St James Infirmary'.  I thought Louis died 40 years back, well no!  I swear he was in the room with us!!!  Oh yes, it truly was that good.  We then had some Frank Zappa, another muso I dislike.   Again, just stunning!!!

Next year at "The Show" perhaps?  ;)
