I just bought one off eBay, in excellent condition, very lightly used.

As a transport sounds great into the Goldmund DAC.

Was it a good buy?

I do know that some Sonys had laser issues.

Hopefully yours isn't one of them!!!

The Sony's 3000ES's main claim to fame is SACD playback......... but you are only using it as a transport.... so.........NO DSD (if that matters)

IMHO a used (and lot newer) OPPO 103 offers MUCH better features for transport use like..........USB.......... an opportunity to explore other (hi res audio/video formats...........and will even output DSD via it's HDMI port.

FWIW.........I run an OPPO 105 through an HDMI de embedder into a Benchmark DAC2 and listen to my (tiny) 2.0 SACD collection using PCM 88.2 conversion with no sonic issues.

Considering the quality and price point of Goldmund DAC's you should probably be looking at transport solutions that reside at similar heights!!!!

the 3000es was a later release, basically a stripped back version of the 9000es. good player though and great buy for the money. shares a lot of the underpinnings of the upper model :)

It wasn't a Laser issue but a Phillips manufactured Mace 2 Furore chips set that was doomed from the start. ALP's Alex Peychev  found this out and there was a big stink over it, because in the end it could't be fixed

Below is what I had saved as, it involed many SACD players at the time,, Krell Sony, Mucical Fidelity, Phillips and some more I can't remember.  Even with these mods it didn't fix it, as he later found so did I.

Yes the latter one 3000es was offered free in place of I believe the doomed 9000es by Sony but it was a much cheaper unit compared to the 9000es

Read the Attched PDF at the bottom re the chip problem.

True, but I wanted try something from yesteryear. These had good wrap on the internet and certainly a pleasure to look at. For this kind of money it was worth a try.

I listen to CDs about 1% of the time, the rest are done via a aria piccolo streamer.

Ah good to know, I found a lot of information about the 9000es but not a lot about the 3000es, now it makes sense.
