WaveR Posted June 16, 2023 Posted June 16, 2023 Hello, can anyone recommend a good technician in Brisbane? Looking to get a few CD players to get looked at, maybe laser replacements? Also, any good tech to refurbish vintage Denon integrated amps? Thanks

WaveR Posted June 16, 2023 Posted June 16, 2023 I have an Arcam FMJ23 (plays but needs check up and refurbishing, I love the sound fron this unit, I want to keep it at optimum condition and put a new laser, recently it trips the house cct breaker), NAD C546 BEE (skipping) and Denon DVD3910 which I use for SACD but doesn’t recognize sacd at start up, if you play a few tracks of CD first and load an Sacd them it plays perfectly ( I bought a spare laser assy for this, I would like to refurbish it). @rockeater I hope you have time to look at them I know you’re the best with CD spinners, I’m happy to post them to you ar WA

These things run on quarter of the power other CD players do and it is VERY unlikely to to be worn out. But obviously something went wrong if it trips CCT breaker. Open it up (unplugged) and see if something isn't obviously wrong. Having a dCS RingDAC it is indeed worth keeping. NAD is I think just another CD player but it has a very good Sanyo laser. Maybe it just needs a clean of the gears or the head rails. DENON DVD3910 might just need a bit of power adjustment on the DVD laser. I am sure you will find someone local to have a look at them. I am trying to limit my work having tons of stuff piling up and waiting their turn. Including Quad 2905 that need refurbishing and taking space for 3 years now. ';-) 1
WaveR Posted June 16, 2023 Posted June 16, 2023 Thanks for the advice mate, will try to open them up and see what I can do
velvetanonblue Posted July 13, 2023 Posted July 13, 2023 I have a Uesugi ubros 3 tube amp with some problems (a long story) I am looking for a tech who can diagnose the issue and fix it, someone who genuinely knows what they're doing, is neat. Often too many times I try a tech and they really have no clue what they're doing, I'd appreciate if someone can suggest me a reliable, great tech they know for Hifi tube amps. Cheers,
BCHR Posted July 14, 2023 Posted July 14, 2023 Hello fellow people of taste, Recently purchased my first proper JBls (L112) but alas, having issues. Can't quite tell what the issue is, if it's the circuitry or if the tweeter is blown, my testing is inconclusive. Does anyone have any recommendations for a suitable repairer in Melbourne I can take them to be checked? Any advice appreciated

Do you have access to a multimeter, are you able to measure impedance for the drivers in question?

bensl Posted August 5, 2023 Posted August 5, 2023 Hi all. I have an old amp I use in the shed but lately one channel keeps dropping out. I sprayed a bit of contact cleaner inside which seemed to fix it but was only temporarily. Beyond that I have no idea. it’s a Yamaha a-500 so not sure if it is worth spending any $$ on. If so, not sure who/were to take it in western Vic. thanks. .

It could be anything from a dicky switch contact to dry solder joint to a hairline fracture of one of the traces on a PCB.

Just generally throughout…. maybe have been a poor idea but I thought worth a shot. It’s an old amp that was covered in a fair bit of dust. It’s one channel regardless of what input is used. When it comes to electrical circuits etc, I have no idea. Edited August 9, 2023 by bensl
IMDave Posted August 13, 2023 Posted August 13, 2023 Hi all. Just wanted to give credit to Tim Wilkinson from Tuned-In Audio in Sydney. My beloved Harman Kardon HK990 integrated amp had given up the ghost, and I was looking at close to $2.5k to replace it like for like. I reached out to Tim via email with a description of the issues. By the time I rang him later that same day, he had downloaded the service manual and had " a few ideas ". Believing we may be able to resurrect it, I dropped it in to Tim. To say I was impressed by the level of effort Tim put into the project would be a massive understatement. Outstanding work, for a very reasonable outlay. Very happy to have the HK back in the system. Can't recommend Tim highly enough. Thank you Sir. 1
Dive Pass Posted August 13, 2023 Posted August 13, 2023 I thought I'd add to this thread after my own recent experience with Donald Tan, repairing my Icon Stereo 40. I have nothing but praise for him: methodical and very communicative. That was important to me because I was sending the amp to him from country Victoria (as I knew he'd worked on these amps before) so it was a bit of a leap of faith.
headshot_g Posted August 13, 2023 Posted August 13, 2023 Anyone got suggestions for a cassette deck repair for my 1986 Toyota Sprinter Trueno GT APEX original headunit? I actually brought it with me to Brisbane because they seemingly have way more techs that "might" be able to work on it here than my hometown of Adelaide. It has the infinite loop (probably cassette reverse) problem where itll play for 1 second, hit reverse, play for 1 second hit reverse etc. It happened after I ran over a big pothole and its been like that ever since..... My best guess is its a belt issue from what I can infer from other people but Im not about to dismantle a priceless headunit that I cant source another of, myself lol. Best leave it to professionals. Ive got a few businesses Ive noted to give a call, but so many who do work on cassette decks, specifically say they dont work on car audio Any personal reccommendations or known cassette car audio guys in Brisbane would be much appreciated. And yes Ill drive as long as I have to if theyre good.

Dive Pass Posted August 16, 2023 Posted August 16, 2023 I got his number from Brian Maddern at Decibel HiFi, which distributes the Icon Audio amps. This might be the closest thing to a website!: https://www.whitepages.com.au/tan-d-721503875R
