Dr Good Vibe Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 Looking to finish the 4 way horn set up I need only maximum of 4 watt mosfet any suggestions.

Happy Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 very nice. i'd be interested in what amps you end up getting. why 4w 'max'?
Dr Good Vibe Posted August 23, 2016 Author Posted August 23, 2016 (edited) It's for the tweeter in the top pic the unicorn has a 3 x 245 2.5 watt Edited August 23, 2016 by Dr Good Vibe
Zaphod Beeblebrox Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 Why restrict yourself to 4 Watts and why MOSFETs?
Dr Good Vibe Posted August 23, 2016 Author Posted August 23, 2016 Not restricted why not mosfet? Ok I'll ask, what would you suggest? I'm really wondering if anyone has or knows of a mosfet amp class A it doesn't need to be more than 4 watt and the frequency it's working in you won't hear if tube or solid state it's part of a 4 way system. The system is around 116db
Zaphod Beeblebrox Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 (edited) Not restricted why not mosfet? YOU suggested MOSFET. I asked why restrict your choice to MOSFET. MOSFETs exhibit MUCH higher levels of distortion at low currents (such as those found in a 4 Watt amplifier) than BJTs. Roughly TEN TIMES the distortion, in fact. At higher currents, MOSFET distortion is around the same as BJTs. Ok I'll ask, what would you suggest? A Class A 20 Watt amp, like the Silicon Chip 20 Watt Class A amp offers spectacular performance, at modest cost. Happy Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 I use Eric's 6fd7 based amps for some of my horns atm. 2wpc direct-coupled SET. Works very well. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Steve M Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 (edited) The little Bakoon 7511 amplifier is the best solid state amp I have ever heard, if you can make use of its paltry 15w/ch. A magical sweet sounding amp with oodles of detail and finesse, it's very quiet too for your horns. It can be got for about $1600 s/h if you are lucky. The Nelson Pass First Watt amps can be quite special, if they are biased high to run hot (near the point of destruction!) in pure Class A mode. The F3 at 10 w/ch is the best one I have heard, a hot one sounds super detailed, airy and ethereal. The Audio Sector USA chip amp at 34w/ch using the LM3875 transistor is very good too, voiced nicely and sweet treble and quiet. While you may think 4w/ch is a maximum goal, in my experience a bit of extra power and grip is a good thing no matter how efficient the speaker is. I'm sure there are a ton of valve candidates too, but the main aim with a 116 dB horn is to find a low distortion quiet sounding amplifier.Regards,Steve. Edited August 24, 2016 by Steve M 1

Steve M Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 (edited) have you also tried any Sugden Class-A? Yes David, have owned the older A21 model superb sweet sounding Class A amp ...not sure how quiet it will be into a 116dB spkr though? Edited August 24, 2016 by Steve M
Happy Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 Yes David, have owned the older A20 model superb sweet sounding Class A amp ...not sure how quiet it will be into a 116dB spkr though? i guess im going OT here but seeing you've had a lot of experience with different Class-A SS amps, was wondering. Got an A21a recently and this is by far the best sounding SS amp I've heard in my office.
Steve M Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 I wouldn't disagree with that, by reputation the Sugden A21a is one of the best ss amplifiers out there. I owned the older A21 and liked it a lot and always wondered how the newer 21a compares? Steve
