Tony Cox Posted March 8, 2024 Posted March 8, 2024 Television - Marquee Moon (1977) Rhino High Fidelity series, mastered by Kevin Gray (2024) Celebrated debut from the New York band at the height of the punk era, although it's more edgy rock with attitude (not unlike the Stones) than punk. A true original, anyway, that I felt deserved a place in my collection. I've owned it before but the pressing didn't do it justice. I'm told that it was Tom Verlaine's intention for it to sound a bit lo-fi grungy, but Kevin Gray has cleaned it up enough for it to pass muster as an almost audiophile pressing. I say almost - it's not up there with the very best, but he's done enough to keep it 'dirty' while improving the dynamics. Not cheap, but worth it for the amazing guitar work on the ten-minute title track alone. Was still available last week from Warner Australia's online store. This is a great series of releases (following The Cars and Van Morrison titles) and could be a good investment as well as a stimulating musical experience. Get it before the price rockets! 4 2
stevoz Posted March 8, 2024 Author Posted March 8, 2024 Me too! I have had Televisions "Adventure", their second album from it's release in '78 but thought it was time to get the debut. The above post reminded me. I didn't get the L/E KG pressing featured above but this one: https://www.discogs.com/release/4065893-Television-Marquee-Moon Television "Marquee Moon" 2012 remastered reissue, NM German pressing (Optimal), remastered (at BG Mastering) and lacquer cut (at RTI) by Chris Bellman.....and at a great price. Cheapest KG copy on Discogs was $40 more so this one will have to do. 2 2
Phill451 Posted March 8, 2024 Posted March 8, 2024 Not sure what pressing I have but this album is the real deal.

Was indeed excellent- I went to the merch tent straight after to grab the vinyl (already have Phase 1) to find they didn't have it. I'm not keen to get it during the day either for obvious reasons!!

stevoz Posted March 10, 2024 Author Posted March 10, 2024 I can't help myself.....but after listening to Kraftwerk's "Techno Pop" (Electric Cafe) last night, I decided to take another look at "The Mix" on vinyl. I have the CD, it does sound great but the 'Techno Pop' LP sounds incredible, so I want The Mix LP now......checked out Discogs and found a brand new 2014 remastered reissue at a reasonable price. Kraftwerk "The Mix" 2014 remastered reissue, 2 x LP, 180g German pressing (Optimal). 6 1
Tony Cox Posted March 11, 2024 Posted March 11, 2024 (edited) Inspired by the always inspiring @April Snow who has long championed these great Aussie pressings, I set out to add to my collection of three Maxicut records (Dire Straits and the Stones), all of which came out tops when compared to the UK and Japanese originals I had. Being Melbourne, there are record shops galore with crates to dig to your heart's content, and I managed to add a whole heap of titles to the collection in just 3 or 4 outings over the past week and a half. I have actually played them all in that time, and I'm happy to say they're all 'keepers' - although the Smokie compilation 'All The Best' remains elusive and now tops my 'holy grail' wants list! I won't resort to Discogs just yet - it's lurking out there somewhere, I know it! Edited March 11, 2024 by Tony Cox 7 1

One is $26, the other $26.50, both including postage. Bargains! Maybe go for the $26.50 one, the seller is higher rated and the cover is described in the comments as excellent....but you choose! https://www.discogs.com/sell/item/511867054 https://www.discogs.com/sell/item/2781650611 Edited March 11, 2024 by stevoz 1 1

anth0110 Posted March 11, 2024 Posted March 11, 2024 I thought ‘what the hell have I bought now ?’ when I saw the cardboard in the post. ‘Oh. That’s right’ saw this band all those years ago. 50 or so people in the crowd and they were fantastic. The power in Coates’ voice. Wow !! Coghlan had left and was replaced by Peter Heckenberg from Boss , who played on the studio release. . Rock n roll at its best 5

And supporting local sellers. I have about 20 records on my wants list and could get them all tonight on Discogs, but where's the fun in that? I do use it for really hard-to-find items, though, so I'm not knocking it - just not something I'd usually use for common or garden titles. That said, I will have a quick check of those links and if they have other items on my list I could still be tempted. We all have our limits when it comes to resisting temptation! 3

YMMV I haven't been to all the Melbourne shops yet, and besides, new stock comes in all the time. The Smokie compilation will turn up. There are other Maxicut titles I'm still after (plus 20 other records on my wants list) but I singled that one out because there was a humourous exchange about it a couple of weeks ago. I was having a laugh with it. Regardless, I've explained over three posts the how and why of the way I collect records. It's how I get the most enjoyment out of my hobby. I respect others who do it differently and I wouldn't dream of challenging them publicly over it. Steve meant well—I thanked him and respectfully declined with my reasons. That should have been the end of it. Now let's please move on. 2
HarveyMushman Posted March 12, 2024 Posted March 12, 2024 Amazing album, still a couple left on Amazon.jp Limited and numbered to 2500. 4
Tony Cox Posted March 12, 2024 Posted March 12, 2024 Then this afternoon this happened. After lunch in Prahran I popped into Chapel Street Bazaar and dug into a few crates scattered around the joint, and lo and behold, look what I found! Both are Maxicuts and both records are NM (from different stalls). That was enough good fortune for me for one day, so I headed home wondering how I'd ended up being excited by an 80s Sir Cliff record (@ $18, incidentally), but my elation was justified when I played it later. It may be the best sounding Maxicut of them all - and depsite the unmistakably 80s production, it's a very listenable album all the way through, so a win on that one. As for Smokie - all's well that ends well is all I'm going to say about that, other than it being another really enjoyable, great sounding Maxicut marvel! 6 1

I suppose it pays to have a number of decent record stores to peruse. Perseverance has definitely paid off! 2
