Different record. A jazz standard. Unless you're being facetious in which case, well played.

Aah, OK - thanks.  👍  (I wasn't being facetious.)

I have this next album but it was only $5 (WTF?!) so I grabbed it. A very fine album, this also looks NM......Jeannie Lewis "Free Fall Through Featherless Flight" Oz 1st pressing.

Since getting that wonderful Kids In The Kitchen EP🥰, I decided to get some more of the same......having seen some other ones down at the bazaar last time.

12'' 45rpm New Romantic synth pop heaven baby!😉🥳

If the SQ is anywhere near the aforementioned, I will be a happy chappy. All 12" 45rpm, all Oz pressings, all appear NM, all $5 ea.

Kids In The Kitchen "Bitter Desire".

NB: The first two albums mentioned above were not $5.....a bit more than that but still quite cheap.

It’s taken awhile, but I’ve finally landed a copy of this. It is in legitimate near-mint condition. Made a “Hail Mary” offer on it on Discogs, and to my surprise the seller accepted. Very happy to have it in this condition at a reasonable cost.

Took the plunge on my 'end game' turntable, a new Technics SL1200GR2.🤘

I had considered the 1200G but after copious research and review reads, for my needs I couldn't justify the extra 2 grand for it......and was not sure my 64 year old ears were going to really notice the difference. Besides, this will be a considerable upgrade on my current humble replinthed and upgraded belt drive CEC BD3200. It also has the Sigma Delta drive motor technology and same quieter power supply that is found in the 1200G.

I am planning to get a 5mm Funk Firm Achromat for it, following Michael Fremer's recommendation. He reckons it goes 'some' way to making up for any SQ loss from it's lighter version of the heavy platter on the 1200G.

Purchased from Japan, it's 100V but my Tortech 100V step down transformer has two outlets, so all good there. TT will be arriving early October. Excited.🥳

What a great turntable!

You don't trust your own 64-year old ears, and yet you will trust Fremer's 77-year old ears? Don't lets pretend that gentleman can hear all those fabled distinctions he writes about anymore 😆

True , and posting file rips of different turntables on YouTube is pointless.

I'm curious ... what is a "Hail Mary" offer?

I am guessing it is a prayer they will accept your offer 🤔

Some might also refer to it as a “low ball” offer aka a desperate offer with little chance of success.

Whilst, yes, I can understand that ... I find it ("Hail Mary") a strange description to use.

After all ... if one prays to Mary - shirley, one believes that this will influence the outcome ... so you wouldn't pray for a lesser thing than what one really wants?

All I know is it’s a great record and I’m very happy to have added it to my collection.

I bought a Pearl-3 Phono Stage kit, designed by Pass Labs very own Wayne Colburn.

Separate PSU, variable gain, variable loading, MM/MC.

Its getting glowing reports.image.thumb.png.cd82ad1f02653797608cd5d56b7429e4.png

Big fan of Pass Labs,  l have their first Aleph Ono phono preamplifier designed by Wayne.

Very talented indeed!!

Mine has the PSU internally, this looks like a great unit with the separate PSU . 🤔

reports say the Pearl 3 stage is huge in both width and depth, imaging is nicely focused and its a detailed coherent response. Its all hearsay for me right now but I do plan to match L~R components including rail voltages to give it every chance of exceeding its already glowing reputation.

The Pearl 3 is a Jfet front end Class A Opamp design and there's quite a few compatible opamps readily available to slot straight in, its auto biasing. It has variable gain & loading. The kit comes with SE outputs and is ready to optionally add XLR out. Quite a slick kit. Wayne has been kind enough to touch on many of the calculations in the design, one of which allows you to truly customize the cartridge loading ladder for any cartridge known to man!

Wayne's words:

The original basis of the front-end (FE) used in Pearl 3 dates back to the Pass Labs Aleph Ono… and similar versions of it have been used in Pearl, Pearl 2, XONO, and XP-15. Having four parallel devices right on the input from the phono cartridge greatly helps with noise, linearity, increases transconductance, and helps improve open-loop gain with lower distortion. The cascode (Q5) is beneficial for noise as the JFET drains have an optimum bias point for minimal noise ,- usually well less than 15v - which the cascode helps to set properly. Additionally, the cap multiplier circuit (Q8, C7 and attached resistors) will provide additional, and importantly, focused power supply filtering to the input stage, which because of the very small signals generated from a cartridge, noise performance is paramount. Because of all of these features, the front-end benefits the most.

There are many great opamps available these days with low noise and high drive. However, when dealing with the amount of gain required for moving coil cartridges, the front-end is still going to benefit from the careful application of discrete, very low noise JFETs. So with Pearl 3, I took the quiet and optimized discrete input stage and combined it with a high-performance opamp, wrapping a single feedback loop around both. The result is a composite amplifier. Now that it has feedback, the total open-loop gain (OLG) is higher and has a lot more adjustability. The use of opamps provides great flexibility for the builder, and you can roll opamps, which many people find to be a lot of fun. Interestingly, all the opamps I’ve tried in the circuit measure quite well, but the harmonic structure seems to change between opamps, so they might actually sound different. This may have more to do with the 2nd stage, but I could see it on my Audio Precision system and HP spectrum analyzer. There are a lot of design issues that are easy to address with opamps but difficult with discrete parts - temperature tracking immediately comes to mind - and that helps with all aspects of the circuit’s performance. Also, having the feedback loop makes it easy to adjust the gain. Feedback changes the overall sound, at least to some extent. Changing overall gain results in less noise, so if you really want to tweak and tune, set R9 for the minimum value you need in your particular system

L & R channel PCBs

(using Jfet SMD option)

I like this very much as I lost interest after Turn Of A Friendly Card. Not the whole thing, but most of it. Sounds great!
