G'day all

I'm got a Raspberry Pi 3 for dad (with Digi+ board - the transformer version) to use as a Roon Endpoint.

Looking to get one of Clay's 5V @ 1.5A low noise linear PSU's for it but just worried it might not have enough juice.

He won't have any USB drives plugged into the Pi 3.

Has anyone tried the Pi 3 with 5V @ 1.5A.

I've had a chat with Clay and he mentioned we should ask SNA to double check because he hasn't tried it himself but it's likely someone out here has.

Much appreciated in advance

I've used pi3 as a squezelite machine with a teradak u9va with no issue I think it has around 1.5A also. I think you only need more than that for high processing application like kodi. for Audio I haven't need more than 1.5A

Hi, thanks for that. Do you have a USB powered hard drive plugged in also? For your music collection

I've run a Pi 2B with a IQaudIO DAC, on a 1200ma wall wart, using Moode or Volumio, without any power shortage issues, But I do use a separately powered HDD for my music collection. You can probably run it on a 1A supply with minimalist OS's. When you start plugging in parasitic USB hard drives, that's when you start to draw a fair bit more current.

At the moment, I'm using a 2A capable USB charge pack (battery pack), and the sound is vastly better.

No USB hard drive for me I stream using Squeezebox server. If talking hypothetical usage if you have 1.5A 5V supply it gives 7.5Watt of power. on normal load I think pi uses 3 Watt of power. so if your harddrive uses 3-4 watt power it should still handles fine. But if your hard drive uses more than than then you need to use a powered hub. but I don't know what's the digi plus board power consumption

Thanks again, I'll need to find out the specific consumption of each of the components and add them up and take it from there.

BTW, @Em84 the 5v Sbooster delivers 3a.

I am new to the forum, this is my first post.  Still need to introduce myself and update my details

Have you considered this power supply rather than linear? It has an extremely low noise level.

My SMPS driving my amplifier sounds better than a linear supply and has zero noise.

Ifi power pack are really good to. It's impressive how low noise switch mode chip these days I've used some smps chip in my DIY with really low noise

Yeh I used an iFi with my microRendu - great performance . But I found when I added a Gieseler linear PSU it stepped things up a level.

Using a down converter (12to5v)  DC/DC 10A adjustable supply from a battery. Nice silent supply indeed, certainly charges a phone well as a bonus :D Volts drop of 0.001v at 2a. Plenty of options out there.

Booting a new PI3 up this weekend and will measure the actual peak/constant demand for you, interested to know as well.

SMPS for amplification is excellent they way it delivers the current if its designed right and noise is not an issue.  Come along way.

I moved from the linear supplies with my amps but unfortunately have been waiting a long time for a high quality SMPS 5V 2.5A - 3A there hasn't been any.

The IFI power supply is the first decent SMPS low power supply on the market from what I have ever found. Its really not worth looking at anything else and better to spend the dollars on some other upgrade.

have you seen the new Kali reclocker on the volumio site.

I have just ordered  the Piano DAC and Kali reclocker.  to compare with my IQaudio DAC I currently have.

Please report back your experience with the kali. I've been thinking to add it to my raspberry pi HDMI i2s setup

The 12v Battery is a pack of Absolite AGM's 286 000 mAh at C10  ;)

The Battery is maintained by 750w of solar modules.

The power supply DC/DC down converter

Nice grunty little supply and amazingly adjustable at 0.001v. Very accurate regulation under load.

CA,

Care to post your impressions so far on the Piano & Kali stack?  Are you using it on a Pi3 or Sparky?  Cheers
