And this why it really is different strokes for different folks. I don't mind watching a good movie several times in a year, and since I have a crap memory I like the convenience of being able to flick between movies quickly.

oh I've got memory of a gold fish when comes to movies it seems... so can watch again. but tend to leave a bit of time in-between. also have a good watch list...we have so many great new releases so busy enough watching them and like that can pop in and just watching it without any further messing about.

but yes definitely a case of different strokes different folks when comes to this stuff. things change too...as has done for me in my approach :)

Got the media PC fired up and making noise though a TosLink connection to the Ground Sound DCN28.

Specs on the PC aren't bad considering I probably built it two years ago or more.

Also just listening to some music through Pure Player which was a favorite Windows player the last time I was dabbling. The sound stage is completely different to the Oppo, sounds like I am in a bigger room.

True, yes the UHD will be locked up tight for a while, but in a year or 2 things may become more liberal as it becomes the "norm".

I very much doubt that UHD bluray will ever become the "norm".

Give it 10 years, the next, better thing will come along, seems to be the real nature of AV formats, DVD then HD now UHD, spanning 30 years ago there was talk that a 1080p TV would be too expensive to produce, let alone broard cast.

Anyway

The next big thing or "norm" will be streaming if it isn't already.

Streaming is fine but there will always be people who want to watch some 1920's movie that isn't available for streaming (or even stuff more recent).

Besides streaming is predicated on decent internet, and like political promises they are all fine in theory but delivery is a whole different story.

@Silent Screamer It is what it is I guess. The requirements for steaming should go down in the future as new codecs like H265 are released although I don't know how much more can be "squeezed".

Anyway so where are you at with your HTPC? I've managed to replace all devices with mine. I don't bother with a NAS and just store on PC drives although I don't bother ripping my own Blurays.

I updated my XBMC 12 to Kodi 17 and found Kore for mobile phone management. So far I am fairly happy with the way it is going, not having to use a wireless keyboard is a real bonus.

Netflix are streaming some 4k content, but at 8Gig an hour could chew into download quotas quick quickly.

Looks nice though, I'm using a Telstra TV box into an inexpensive hi-sense 4K TV.

I have a spare Raspberry Pi sitting around I might just try Kodi on that over the break.

I think one of the reasons I parked the HTPC in the first place was because when you display PC over a TV it often doesn't line up properly with the TV resolution and you are missing a bit here and a bit from there, but I changed the setting on the TV from 16:9 to full and now it fits on the screen perfectly. Keen to see what difference a better sound card makes, but the video seems fine.

Anyone know of a remote on for PC so I don't have to get up every time? Kodi shuts it down nicely but doesn't start for obvious reasons.

I use a Linux based HTPC and use a Windows MCE remote kit. I have a USB port active on sleep, so a long press on the power button wakes up the PC.

I have also set up scripts so when the PC thaws from sleep it turns the telly on. Same when I press the power button to make it sleep, it turns the telly off.

Do you use that remote to control Kodi or just turning putting the PC to sleep?

Also where do you set wake on USB? trying to figure the best place to do it. Couldn't see anything in the BIOS.

I control many programs from it. Kodi and MythTv.  I have also setup scripts to power on the receiver and adjust volume as well :D

It is set to wake from USB at an OS level. I'm not home at the moment so I would need to look through it all to remember how I did it.

I guess you are running Windows so yeh, will be completely different to implement any how.

Google is awesome for this stuff!

I already have this network based TV hooked up I might just get this other one out of the box and plug it into the HTPC. That way I might be able to watch TV through either Windows Media Center or Kodi.

I run a full network TV based system. Based on MythTv which is a Linux only system (although there are ports for Mac and PC) which allows me to use either the native MythTv front-end or Kodi as a front end on the various clients throughout the house. I use this with 4k TV's and also a 4k projector although I am yet to actually watch anything in 4k through any of the clients.

The above link will get you started on doing some cool things with your remote. It's the same software already baked into most Linux distributions but ported over to Windows. (I am still assuming you are using Windows?)

Give it a go, + 1 month on an install to something or other. Listen to it as well,:)

I don't care, it's faster.

(edit) and I don't mind the power consumption to update, briefly normally, as its free off grid.
