aechmea Posted September 21, 2022 Posted September 21, 2022 (edited) This didn't happen because I have no pictures! A very good friend's significant birthday last weekend with some people from his wine club, me and another drinker friend. All his wine. I didn't write anything down so this is from a now vague memory. A French fizz - missed this completely being a bit late getting there! Arras fizz - OK - over-hyped? 2018 German (dry) riesling from Rheingau (a Grosses Gewatch maker but can't remember which one). Top year, top maker but considering the price differential, just as happy with a Tassie riesling. 2004 Keith Tulloch Hunter Semillon. Excellent. Normally made in a high acid style this one is about right now. Unusual vibrant green/gold. Not even one of the selected single vineyard wines. 1976 Trimbach Gewurztraminer. Well past it. 1983 Guigal Cote Rotie. OK - a bit tired. 1987 Penfolds St Henri (magnum). Good. 2010ish Ridge Cabernet (California). Very Excellent. 2004 Ch. Pichon Longueville Lalande. OK but expected better - a bit dull, maybe. 2009 Kracher No 6 - an Austrian trokenbeerenauslese. Made from chardonnay of all things. Seemed known amongst the group but I had never heard of the maker nor the wine. Morris Old Premium Rare Muscat. Excellent of course. Of course they were all very good; I'm just being overly picky. IMO the 2 best were the Keith Tulloch and the Ridge cabernet, both exceeding expectations considerably amongst some tough competition. Edited September 21, 2022 by aechmea 9 1 1

2Brix Posted September 23, 2022 Posted September 23, 2022 (edited) @tripitaka I'll report back or update after i finish the last 1-2 glass worth tonight. While I absolutely love smokey, and peaty, whiskeys I feel i didn't really enjoy the flavouring and (slight) smokiness that has been imparted to the wine by ageing in whiskey barrels. It was only a $20 buy but to my palate there's much better taste to be had. Edit: thinking back to the first couple of glasses (2 nights ago) i found the taste to quite biased towards a savoury, lightly smoked ham for wont of a better description which i found distracting, it tasted warm and a bit dull, masking or confusing the Shiraz and Cabernet characteristics...but as i finished the last 1-2 glasses tonight the savoury smokiness was gone (possibly aerating in the bottle despite vacuum sealing) and i felt it had diminished to merely a run of the mill cabernet of medium tannin and low sweetness. Overall not one i'd personally hurry to buy even at $20. These days my bias is to big shiraz's that are juicy, full bodied but counterbalanced with enough tannin to cut through and make an interesting drink (to me). Fortunately for me i find quite a few of these at an economical (c.$20) price point. Beer taste on a beer income Cheers 2B Edited September 23, 2022 by 2Brix 1 1

lemarquis Posted September 23, 2022 Posted September 23, 2022 Think of this as your standard Ballantynes blend with a dose of mature caramel toffee on top. Good drinking and value if on special for 50. 7

Dont Judge me OK? so way I look at it is this - wine lasts for 10 mins but the LP last me forever - you can all say "practical girl is that April" LP is Aussie press 1978 from original UK stampers - so freaking good I to replay it and decided to devour with a tipple in hand 6 1 3
