JPete9 Posted September 20, 2017 Author Posted September 20, 2017 (edited) Keeping in mind i am just an enthusiastic listener and i dont pretend to know lots of audiophile lingo. My impressions from 2-3hrs solid listening. -there is a lushness to this that my yamaha vintage SS does not have. The sound is rich and lush. -the highs never get to a piercing tone that my speakers are capable of - means you can play stuff that might have otherwise have a sharp edge (maybe some folks call it shrill?) and now it sounds full and round? -everything about it feels and looks like it's hand made high quality. its quite big in person. -i havent done much AB testing, but i will on Saturday night. -there is something very very different about the impact (maybe there is a better term for this) but the impact of percussion for example is much more dramatic. -the bass is deeper, nicer toned and again more dramatic. I really really like the sound. The best way i can describe is lush. I'll spend a little more time and listen side by side on the weekend. Edited September 20, 2017 by JPete9 2
Willmax Posted May 10, 2018 Posted May 10, 2018 How are you going with your Weston Acoustic amp and the NS-1000WX speakers? Do you find yourself listening more to valve or solid state these days - what is the split? Sound considerations aside, I was thinking that a good valve amp would really go well during the winter months while could leave the SS amps for the summer.
JPete9 Posted May 10, 2018 Author Posted May 10, 2018 Yeah I love the Weston. I would still call it lush. If i suddenly had no amp, i would ring Earle and order another today. I used the SS this year once this year, as a comparison. SS is very clinical and works very nicely with the cloth domed NS690, but not a patch on the Weston with the NS1000XW. I wont be changing speakers or amps for a very long time. I don’t think I can overstate just how nice the highs and mids are – by comparison to what they were. You read is everywhere, but in practise, the following is really important and makes huge improvements in SQ. Speaker height. Mine were too high lowering them made the biggest difference so far. Even 80mm makes a huge difference, in my room. Changing the position, measuring the differences and finding the best spot where I had the smallest Low Freq dip and excellent stereo imaging, was just as impactful as height. I listen to very little rock on this system. Most of my rock is on the 690s or in the car. When I sit down to listen, its generally something a little more gentle. Generally, at not very high levels. But it can be louder if I want, 35watts is plenty for the 1000 series. My Weston is the USA version of the Euro EL34 type, 6CA7. You don’t have to spend big dollars. Earle can ship them very easily, he lives in neighbouring suburb to me Earle is very honest, ask him what you need and listen him. I said I wanted that silky smooth valve feel, something to contrast the SS. He could’ve upselled me, and I tried to upsell myself, but he talked me out of it. You’ll get your money back if you don’t like it, but I doubt that will happen.
