He refused to be pigeon-holed into a specific style or genre, fusing traditional folk, blues, jazz and experimental music. This caused him no end of trouble with record companies. He was the first white artist to sign to Island Records and to be fair Chris Blackwell stood by him for many years. Martyn also had human frailties, as do we all, especially drink and drugs. He never got the fame nor fortune his music deserves, and maybe he had a self destructive personality. And yet he left a wonderful treasury of music and conveys emotion like no one else, perhaps because of his flaws. The only other artist who comes close is Sandy Denny. I had the privilege to see him perform several times, always a great experience. He doesn't click with everyone but if he does you are in for quite a ride. John and his first wife, Beverley, were friends of Nick Drake and his song "Solid Air" is about Drake. This clip is typical of his live performances, joking with the audience, even a bit crude then performing with such emotion. he died aged 60 in 2009, but he left a great legacy. 4 2
