FWIW the drivers are 30W100 🙂

From memory they are in around 160-180 litres for each driver. They have a total linear Xmax of around 11mm, and total Xmech of just over 20mm. They are obviously perfectly adequate for the design but they are not the same as high excursion subwoofers of today.

I sit corrected 🙂

those drivers are beasts with an amazing transient response.

That explains the noise.

@tubularbells was telling me about a brand new alternative that was available but he’d have to chime in and I’m not sure how exact the replacement is.

it was this one…

The foam has been stuck on the front of the cone which might change the voice coil height, thus x-max.....Those woofers feel like they have soft suspension so it might not matter as much. I assume Speaker Hospital butchered the woofers? They love sticking foams on the front.

I've had big horsepower amps shut down driving the Sovereigns but never bottomed out the woofers once. Had a pair of Accuphase monoblocks hooked up once with a digital readout in watts. I was getting peaks of 1500 watts and they never broke a sweat. Looking at the pictures you provided the room looks huge so maybe you were driving them too hard in an environment they weren't designed for.

Yeah the foam on the front is often done when the surround is the wrong size as a cheat.

It was all 4 Woofers that bottomed out at the same time and that track is ruthless and brutal and I am very sure it was just high level sub 20Hz content.

Maybe someone with a pair of Sovereigns could validate it 🙂

I currently have a pair of dual 12” servo Ryhthmik subs running with the Divas and it really makes them work. They have a linear range of 1.4" peak to peak and 2.6" peak to peak max excursion.

The driver in the link is 10” whereas the Dynaudio 30W100 is 12” - I gather there is a 12” version of the 10” one linked above?

The original woofers definitely had soft suspension. If a surround replacement has offset the cone backwards I could understand that being a reason contributing to the voice coils bottoming out.

Ohh I (and many other SNA's) will be getting flashbacks of the pain getting these into the church at my joint. Congrats and would love to hear a pair in a suitable room instead of mine which are essentially used as giant headphones.

These are the ones that Gotye’s big album was probably mastered on in Melbourne. The others were from NSW

If I take my CPs over he already has the marquis I sold him - we could recreate this promotional shot and try them all out

Lachlan worked with Frank Tetaz who mastered and recorded that Album, and as Frank has a pair of Sovereigns , Lachlan got a pair also when he branched off as he knew them so well. As far as I know Frank still has his.  Franks room is amazing and was built around the Sovs for a pretty penny.

Not sure if I should soil these hallowed pages with this info  but he moved to the Kii 3+BXT combo. This was his setup, the Sovs are in there surrounded by Neumanns .  I didnt get to hear this unfortunately.image.png.63c50383003c1e9c9a68e33e23063843.png

I'm new to this discussion so hello to all. Some years back, I purchased a pair of Black Night's (PCL-400) from Encel in Melbourne. I thought that my speaker journey was over but financial issues presented a situation where I had to move them on along with the Krell KSA-100's that were driving them. I am now looking again. I did manage just last night to pick up an IB-20 Thor sub woofer and wondered if anyone on this forum had any experience with them. I'm trying to get the schematic of the outboard crossover as this was built around 1986 so it's probably due for a re-cap at the least. Any help would be seriously appreciated.

Posted

Further to my post of 02.10.24, I have removed the driver of the IB-20 and discovered, of all things, a Magnavox sticker and a Total Recoil Sticker. The TR sticker indicates that the driver was most likely worked on as it has a roll surround fitted. In all my years of playing in this sand pit I've never seen a Magnavox driver with this type of surround as they were usually just a ribbed continuation of the cone. Also, why is there an early 1970's driver in a product built in 1986. Surely Mr. Dunlavy wouldn't have used a speaker of this type (especially with limited excursion) in his products. The plot thickens......

Posted

I'm not really all that peed off about what I found. Curious would be appropriate. The Sub works, The external Active Crossover works. So for $200 I consider myself to be way ahead. When situations like this occur, I have this innate desire to find out the history behind a situation. I would dearly love to know what the original driver was, even though I will not be able to find one. I'll refurbish the crossover and the plate amp, restore the cabinet and if I can't get this driver to do what it's told, I'll chose an appropriate replacement. You see, it's the history in this hobby (or rabbit hole) as much as anything else (for me anyway). Thank you for your response as it is most valued. I hope others will assist me in my search.
