Ive just heard from someone who went to inspect the sovereigns and the krells. The sovereigns need the woofers refoamed and one of the krells doesn't fire up and he reckons they are overpriced.

cheers,

Arthur.

Good info!
Speakers are an easy fix,

Krell not so much.
Still, all ammo to haggle with ?

Surely you could fit them in your room. Knock down a wall or whatever.

Need a big canoe but, with a motor.?

I’ve carried them before... My current speakers at 120kg each are heavy enough

Hi Kelossus ,

What Amps are you using for your Princess ( is it the PCL 1100 series or the newer C5000 series ) ? I’m currently using the audio research REF 610T w/ the KT120 upgrade all tube amp  and in my 6 x 4 meter room w/ a 9 feet ceiling it’s not lacking in Bass nor mid bass . Mid range as you said is quite good . I’ve heard the Sovereigns PCL 2001 and for me the Mids of the Princess are more open . But the bass of the sovereign is fantastic.

I use a Krell FBI, It's a Krell FPB300CX and KCT in one box.

The speakers aren't really lacking but when you compare them to a large pair of JBL's, they are. The mid-bass is what I would call a little soft on the Princesses. I went and listened to my friends 250TI's and forgot just how visceral the JBL's can be. It really showed me what I was missing out on.

Edit: I have the original PCL1100

Hi Kelossus ,

I had JBL’s back in the day but only the small model ( L65 Jubal’s and a 4312B ) . They had mid bass indeed but for me it was colored . The Duntech Princess is uncoloured and the bass is well defined , try a big tube amp like the high powered VTL’s 450 signature or the Siegfried’s or the ARC REF 250’s and newer 750’s and you’ll be able to hear / feel the mid bass wallop of your Princess . I remember my old ARC D250 MK2 servo and my Classic 150 monoblocks when I was using them to drive my C5000 Princess they’re  bass were not as tight , but the mid bass had visceral impact and a dynamic contrast like the real thing . Specially when this old amps are used  w/ my ARC SP11 MK2 preamp .

I really doubt a tube amp is going to have more impact than my Krell. It might roll off/soften the bottom end which may be bring the mid-bass out.

Really can't compare those smaller JBL bookshelves to a large speaker like the Princess. The 250TI comparison is in the ball park. Besides the 250TI's out punching the Princess' neither have a coloured bass IMO. More the difference of a well designed sealed speaker vs bass reflex.

I'm not trying to rubbish the Princess', they are my daily drivers and I can't imagine selling them anytime soon. What they lack in a little mid-bass wallop they make up for it in other areas.

Looks like the poor dead bloke in Tas had some serious gear running his Sovereigns. A whole stable of awesome ME amps as well as the KAS Krells.
Guy was in heaven even before he passed.

The Krell's are now 24k? No mention of them not working as previously reported.

Yeah I know.
Puts you off. Looks like a relative thinks he has a gold mine. Reality will have to settle in eventually.
But in its day, all working. Would have been spectacular

Is there a way to determine if the Sovereigns are the earlier 180kg version or the later 125kg version? Can you tell from the serial number? Is the older style backplate like Tubularbells' Sovereigns the clear indicator they are the original 180kg version?

By no means an expert but as far as I know two visual things differentiate the V1 (mine) to the V2 & V3 is the single terminal backplate and the big ass rectangular plinth (as opposed to the rounder black ones employed later on)

V1 is also slightly bigger I believe but not sure how true that is.  Given the state of the present world i've already measured myself up and can fit comfortably inside one if the insidious Covid forces me to take a dirt nap.

What are your serial numbers? I have seen a few with the large rectangular base but the back plate is the later bi-wire type.

Good to know they double as caskets. When I was younger I always said I was going to be buried my VL Calais Turbo. With shifting interests and an older perspective it's comforting to know this new hobby can also house me physically.

Will be picking up the woofer foams tomorrow. Have to say it was terrifying spending that sort of money. My phone just isn't ringing and I shouldn't be spending but I couldn't help it.

I may have to go work for wages. Scary times.

This also means my Princess' will be up for sale if any local is interested. They have one scratch on the back but besides that the cabinets are absolutely mint.

Hi Chris, only ever two types of cabinet. PCL2001 series and then the C6/7000 - C6000/7000 had same cabinet but C7000 had the Krell active crossovers. Later C6000 had some cross over mods and also the later version had updated mid range drivers.

Are the PCL2001 cabinets roughly 180kg?
