I have decided to go down this path, get 2 more identical speakers as my fronts, Richter Wizard Mk4's (if i can find them) and a 5 channel poweramp. I have decided this after listening to my collection of DVD audios and 5.1 SACD's and have not heard anything better ever especially something like Dreams from Fleetwood Mac Rumours on DVD Audio. Anyone here have a similar sort of system that mainly concentrates on surround music, I know it was fairly big thing back in the 70's with Quad so maybe this could make a revival like vinyl has.

Have an interest in multichannel music, stereo and movies. Using Anthem AVR running Anthem Room Correction which is excellent for multi channel music. My rears are smaller than the fronts for WAF considerations (system in family room).

Your decision to get identical speakers is the ideal configuration. A good list of multi channel music is the

Quadraphonicquad Poll. Quite a number of them are 4 channel, ideal for your setup.

Yes I feel that is my letdown, my surround speakers which are great, B&w DS6 but really designed for movie sound effects.

Dipole speakers definitely not for multi channel music. Totally agree you need to change.

I had ancient satellite speakers and upgraded to Monitor Audio Apex A10s, about the largest I could get away with (for the family room). Excellent audio for its size, flat response. The reason why I survived so long on the old speakers was ARC on the Anthem AVR. It made a difference and with the addition of the Apex A10s, I am happy with the rears. My fronts are SGR Audio CX3B.

A few weeks ago, I went dual subs. Dreams on SACD was superb. Not sure you listen to Diana Krall, many of the jazz pieces have double bass, which presented well.

If you want good quad, get Chicago Quadio, cheaper on Amazon UK.

My ideal multichannel music system

PS Audio Memory DirectStream Transport
3x DirectStream Jr
5x PS Audio M700 monos
5x KEF LS50
1x JL Audio f110v2

5 identical speakers that sound reasonably good is IMHO always hard to do. And the LS50 is just best bang for the buck.

Failing that, an Oppo 205 might do - replacing the Transport/DSJ combo.

I did investigate the KEF L50, but they were larger than the MA Apex A10s. Plus being rear bass reflex, was not sure how they perform mounted on rear walls?

Plan A was surround music, but then I drifted more towards 2ch which now occupies 95% of my listening time. But I still have the 7.1 music capability, and it does sound good (I just bought Ed Sheeran live in concert at Wembley Stadium and played it last night in 7.1 PCM and it was almost like being there).

Gee how do you mix 1 guitar and 1 voice for 7 channels.:D

For SACD playback you'd want Pure Direct - no bass management, no time delays. So you'd want to have all the speakers equidistant anyway. That means IMHO speakers equally spaced around the main listening position.

By using ambiance microphones that will recreate the acoustics at a nominated listening position in the original recording venue when later played back on a surround system.

I use a 5.1 system.

Setup is multichannel files stored on a Synology NAS.

Using Roon for playback on a mac mini.

Audio over IP with DVS (Dante Virtual Sound card) on the mac sending music to a Focusrite Rednet 1 which outputs analogue (RCA) 5.1 sound to my multichannel processor.

Some of the DVDA/SACD multichannel mixes of classic albums are superior to their 2 channel versions (Fleetwood Mac - Rumours, Eagles - Hotel California and Elton John GBYBR, Captain Fantastic, Madman, Tumbleweed and Honky Chateau to name a few) IMHO.

Its a bit of effort and cost to set it up but the sound is worth it.
