Signal wise my plasma had no probs syncing with all signals including 720/50p from the toshie.

Hi mozmo,

Can you please tell me if the Toshiba can sync with your Plasma in HD at 1080i? This is the main requirement for me in upgrading from the 2000A, and your comment would be most helpful.

Thanx alot.

Hi Marshall, I have a sony 42b1 and it's worked perfect with 1080i and the toshie, no singal droping or issues what so ever, it's also worked amazingly well with 720p too which i wasn't sure my panel supported properly until finding the display mode in the service menu recently. compared to the dgtech when I used it on my panel, the toshi gives much better colour, is sharper and more detailed. Very glad i got the toshie in the end. Of course you are aware that the toshi only has component out so you need to use a 5 bnc to rgb cable, connect the rgb bnc to yuv using some bnc to rca adapters, the cable and fitting adapters should end up costing around $40.

The only thing i've had to fiddle with on my panel was when i got my pal progressive dvd player, i used to get some brightness fluctuations in the signal, but i managed to fix that by going into the service menu and adjusting some of the cp settings for the 576p mode. Besides that it's all been sweet. If you don't know how to get into the service menu all you need to do is when the panel is off press on the remote.

display, 5, brightness+,on - buttons in sequence, when you press the menu button you'll have 3 submenus to choose from, there is a tonne of calibrations and various settings, but of course be carefull not to change something you shouldn't.

digicruiser, i saw the dick smith palm pilot one, looks cool i'll have to check it out, i take it you've had a good experience with it.

I cannot recommend this remote too highly - Home Theater Master MX-500

I also have a Pronto clone, the Yamaha RAV2000. The MX-500 beats it for ease of use. Hard buttons are much easier than a touch screen. Bought on-line and delivered from the US in about 8 days for under AUD$200

hi Mozmo,

No complaints, it does what I want very well. Especially the backlight. In the dark you touch anywhere on the panel to bring the backlight up and then you choose whatever... Sound indication etc. Hard buttons won't allow one to change the icon/text on the button although ones does have limited alternatives for each single button.

Of course the remote craign is raving about may be better, you just need to go and see one. One guy sat on his the other day, you would have thought this guy lost someone who died or something...

I did see a Sony remote which was full-on but pricey - It may just come down to how much you want to spend. If you have a pocket-computer or palm with infrared, you can buy $14 (?) software and set that up to control most devices - check on Inet for Pocket Pc software... Jsut check the transmitting distance of the palm etc.

Cheers.

Can someone with a Toshie in Sydney who are able to pick up the Woo'gong signals are you getting them under Sydney scan or are you selecting the Wool'gong menu to pick up the signals it appears my unit is bypassing the signals and is only looking for the pre-set channels under Sydney area

Yes, the Tosh remote is very sensitive, not just laterally but also vertically. It's generally okay though. I'd prefer the exit button to be isolated from the other buttons but you get used to it.

The first day I got the unit, all the functions were locked - no buttons would work unless I pressed the exit button first (and yes, I did have working batteries in it). Then when I did change a channel or something else, it would relock and I'd have to press the exit button before I could do anything else. I unplugged it a few times and after about a couple of hours, it started working perfectly and I haven't had any problems since.

One thing I noticed was that I didn't have to go through the setup process as the unit was already set up for Melbourne time zone and channels (I'm from Melbourne). I did a rescan though as a few of the channels were missing. I don't know whether this indicates that mine is a previously returned unit resold. There was certainly no damage to the box to indicate it had previously been opened.

Apart from the fact that you can't change the display from showing the time (as opposed to showing the selected channel or the output resolution), I think the only other ommission is a flip button that will flip between the current channel and the previously seleted channel. This would be handy to flip between channels (eg. comparing the HD broadcast with the SD broadcast) without having to manually input the channel numbers.

And for the Sony KVHR36M31 owners, I can't get the Sony to sync with the 720p output of the Tosh either.

That is one function that I really miss, is the recall (channel swap) button. I used this often on the old Thomson and find that really stupid leaving it out! I would think that the signal data would be different with the right / left buttons compared to the volume buttons when transmitted. So instead of duplicating volume and channel functions with the direction keys, they could make changes to the box software to recognise the difference and use the left right keys to swap channels. They also need to put into memory the last channel viewed...

It would be like the new Thomson 500au trick. Use the arrow right button to change video format while watching a programme, while not marked on the remote. It seemed to be a last thought to put it in but it proven to be a useful one.

It switches to the native res of the incoming transmission automatically.

Angelo

I may be doing something wrong but while the ch9 HD loop was on I changed the resolution to 720p and my pj noted that [720/50] when CSI Miami can on it remained at 720p! so what position is auto mode and I was using out 2

Hi Guys,

Getting back to prices, I just bought a Tosh S32A today for $789 by showing Hardly Norman some print outs of other peoples web prices.

I'm in Albury/Wodonga.

We can only get the ABC up here so far but it looks great.

Particularly the HD channel through a Projector.

Apparently Seven (Prime will start SD quality in a couple of months but HD will take a lot longer)

Does anybody know what resolution it actually is. The Tosh says 1080i but I doubt it.

Are they just upscaling from another lower resolution?

Can't wait to see native 1080i like the Melbour folk.

We better not start this S23 "A" bizo again, hehe. Even though some places advertise the "part" the Toshies we get home doesn't have it! Hmmm, Groover ready to go nuts again about 2 different Toshie models?

Let me clarify... is the Toshie saying it's 1080i or is it the projector showing you that? I'm just running a decent but not HD capable display so I don't know if the Toshie shows it itself on HD displays...

ABC wouldn't be running 1080i through HD as this is viewable on some SD boxes...

I presume your not using the DB15 XGA ouput on the Pana. With the Palsonic on this input I could not set the level of colour only colour balance.

RonF,

You are correct, I have mine connected via Y Pb Pr component to AV2 on the Pana

The ABC are upscaling their programs to 1080i during prime time but don't have any native 1080i programs. In between programs though, they drop back to a still shot of the ABC logo on the HD channel and then recommence broadcasting when the next program starts.

It's fairly annoying but it's probably because they're broadcasting the programs nationally and doing the upscaling from their central studio and then dropping back to the local ads and newsbreaks where they don't yet have the equipment to broadcast in HD.

Hi Laurie

If you force the Toshi to up/down scale it will remain that why unless you change the settings manualy again or change to a different channel.

How are you finding the Toshi ?

Very happy as this is my first use of a stb but was disapointed it did not have a coaxial audio out as my amp did not have toslink but managed to get hold of a converter was watching Chicken Run on 9 to-night and was fantastic on my Sony 10ht[@150" diag] pj BUT noted the tuner front end is not very sensitive as I have a Nebula hooked up across the same aerial input and it pulls in Wool'gong channels some 120 km away the Toshi does not see them and I tried to enter them manually also without success

I'm approx 15km west of the Sydney central area towards parramatta, but elevated giving me a good line of site towards south but the funny thing the nebula card can pull those south coast stations in with an indoor antenna hook the Toshie up to the same aerial and get only sydney stations! I might try a UHF outdoor aerial and see if the Toshie picks WIN,STC,Prime by the way Angelo the indoor aerial is the type with 2 rabbit ears and a half circle UHF aerial.

Hi comrades,

Just back from "Gilligan's Island" with the correct amount of sunburn.

FWIW & AFAIK "Auntie" is upconverting from 576i/50 SDI to 1125i/1080 at their Snell & Wilcox upconverter, then the Tandberg HDTV encoder re-samples the 1125 to 1440 for the DVN & transmission muxes. They have done quite a bit of fiddling with pre-filtering and GOP structure to lessen the bit-rate & HD bandwidth load, and "Polish The Turd" to the best HD PQ they can squeeze out of the available mux load.

But I stand to be corrected? (It's all bloody voodoo to me!)

Cheers,

G’day All

Hope this may prove useful to anyone out there who has the Tosh S23 (with component output) and who has a display device (Plasma etc with a VGA input (Like my Rank Arena)

I bit the bullet and ordered one of these Component / VGA transcoder’s

from The Gadget Shop in Melbourne.

http://jc.com.au/~jaswebpics/gadgets/componentvga.html

The device allows me to hook the component output of the Toshie to the VGA input of the TV. {The Rank Arena only displays 720p on this connection……. along with 576p and 1080i of course} and it has freed up the YPbPr connection for a progressive DVD – possibly the Momitsu if they can sort out the 1080i/50Hz issue. The YCbCr connection stays with my current DVD player.

The unit works famously and does all that it claims (What more can you ask).

It even comes with adaptor cables for the Xbox or Gamecube. (Not that I have either).

There are no synching issues and it worked with the default settings on the Auto mode. Didn’t have to change a thing.

The unit doesn’t convert the signal at all – just passes thru whatever is fed in i.e. 1080i in – 1080i out, 576p in – 576p out, etc.

Gotta be the cheapest and smallest transcoder on the market

PS

West Coast HiFi in Cannington, Perth, WA have the Toshie advertised at $688.

:blink::P

Does anyone know if I can output from my VGA port on my laptop to the component input on my TV? Is there an adapter. Is it as simple as a straight wire connection and then using something like powerstrip?

Not that it worrys me too much however there still is no audio associated with the Toshiba STB & Channel 99 in Sydney there has never been audio, yet there was with the DGTEC.

I assume there should be audio, therefore is there a bug in the Toshiba STB?

Any ideas?

I'm also in Sydney (as you know). I have a Panasonic HD STB.

The Channel 9 EPG intermittently looses sound for me.

The first time it happened it disappeared for a couple of days.

I did a re-scan and it re-appeared.

Since then, I've always ignored it and it has come back by itself.

Yes, and all my other favourite toy shops!

I notice that Harvey Norman has a new store opening (for computers and electronics only) in Martin Place soon - downstairs in the old Dendy Theatre.

Maybe they'll have some opening specials.

I can't decide between a HD CRT or a SD Plasma .......
