I don't know whether what I am seeing is peculiar to the Sony IDTV or is common to all sets. I am using a Nextwave STB, but it is the same with the Sony tuner.

When FTA digtal broadcasts 4:3 programming, the picture on my set is considerably wider than the normal 4:3 picture, closer to 14:9. Also, when watching Foxtel channels on satellite (excluding the 3 16:9 channels), the same thing occurs when I have the STB set to Wide Screen. If I set the STB to Auto, the 4:3 channels revert to the narrower 4:3 picture.

Am I correct in assuming that the extra picture real estate I am seeing is simply that which is normally overscanned by a 4:3 TV or when my TV is set to 4:3.

I've got the KD32DV40AS and decided to check out what you described. I use the internal DTV tuner for digital, the internal tuner for analog and have also got an Austar satellite box connected. I get the same outcome as you, whether using the internal decoder or Austar decoder set to WS. So it seems it's not peculiar to your specific TV or set up.

I've got the 76cm screen. I get about 2 cm less image each side on the 4:3 picture when watching analog than when watching the same 4:3 image via the DTV tuner or Austar. The smaller analog 4:3 picture is not in any way squashed but is "cutting off" the image at the left and the right that would otherwise be in the extra 2cms. Weird.

It's not a geometry issue, I think. I'm hoping a friendly techie reads this and gives us some advice, as I can't get all networks on digital and need to watch a mix of DTV and analog. My TV is way down country so it's difficult to get a technician in. (Now, if Austar would just carry all of the FTA networks - I don't think so.)
