I currently have an Emtech 1150 SD box, Foxtel Digital box, LG VCR & Conia DVD player connected to an old 68cm Akai 4:3 TV. Looking at buying either a Thomson 32WX610A or 36WX610 TV as these seem to have plenty of input options. Would appreciate comments from anyone who owns or has owned one of these models. Other suggestions of suitable brands/models also most welcome.

Thanks

I've got one of the cheaper 32" models - apart from a minor problem (with sync jumping) that's currently being fixed under warranty, it's been pretty good value

Not sure what the "higher" models are like though.

I have one of the Thomson 32WX610A tvs.

While the picture is great and they have a few AV inputs, one problem (which could be classed as a major one) that I experienced is that when watching Region 1 DVDs that contain macrovision, the macrovision signal appears to make the TV put itself into standby.

It only ever happens on Region 1 DVDs. I did hours of testing various combinations of having different equipment in different AVs and using different connections and couldn't get around it. I also tried several different DVD brands and models of DVD players and all did the same thing. It was actually when the service team from where I bought it from (Videopro) had it for a while that they discovered it seemed to be the macrovision in Region 1 DVDs that was causing it. They tried a couple of the same model TV and they all exibited the same issue.

After much agonising over what to do I ended up keeping the TV and they supplied me with a 'macrovision remover' which gets around the issue - though obviously now I only have the DVD player hooked through composite. S-video being the best I could hook it up through previously as my DVD player (Pioneer DV344) doesn't have RGB output. I kept the TV because I like the picture - thought it was better than other TVs around at the time - Philips and Panasonic 150A. The Panasonic 200 was about to come out, but I couldn't really afford to upgrade the TV. It's my intention to keep it for a few years and then go plasma, LCD or projection.

On a side note though, Videopro service tried a Thomson DVD player and didn't experience the problem. So, I am not sure whether the DVD player was macrovision free, or if it was perhaps SCART or something that then bypassed the problem. I meant to get the model off them, but never got around to it.

I even went through ATS (Australian Support for Thomson). Last I heard was that they have reported it to Thomson for testing and comment. I haven't heard anything back from them since then and they haven't replied to numerous e-mails I have sent asking for an update. This was now probably close to 6 months ago and so I have pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I will never hear back from them.

Re macrovision...You can use your macro killer on your s-input by splitting the cable and running the LUMINANCE signal through the macro killer. This will probable also work on the "G" of RGB and the "Y" on component (Works on S but not tested on rgb or component as yet). Have a look at the back of the Dick Smith cat for info on S-leads, easiest way is to make up a lead with the right plugs/sockets. Good luck !

Have you tried the Wintel SCART DVD player from Radio Parts?

http://www.wintel.com.au/

Have been considering seeing if I can trial one of their DVD players. I would know within 15-20 minutes whether the problem is still there or not. Unfortunately at the moment it is still a case of trying to find both the time and money to upgrade.

At the moment I'm still happy with how I have things setup. When initially going through s-video I never really noticed much difference in the picture quality

Not really up to scratch on all the technicalities of the various video outputs. Though I might give it a look into at some stage.

Thanks. Are there any sites that show the wiring of S-Video - ie: which pins, etc are for what?

I've seen macro killers advertised that have both composite and s-video, but the one I got was free, whereas these were ~$70.

I have one of the Thomson 32WX610A tvs.

Hello,

Though this is a few years down the road, I wonder if anyone could please help me source a remote and owners manual for the Thomson SCENIUM WX610A (3 AV input ports, scart, on the rear, one composite on the front). I bought a set at a closing down sale without them 13 months ago and was using it in conjunction with a KAON pvr which had scart output and evrything was groovy since I could operate the whole set up using the pvr's remote.

But then the KAON died and I was given a DGTEC as a replacement, but this does not have SCART output, only component and composite. Got a scart -> component cable, but this did not work showing no picture at all. Scart to composite gave me a picture but the aspact is wrong (DGTEC service told me that composite output from their unit displayed the correct aspect on a 4:3 monitor). When I connected the DGTEC to a friend's plasma tv (AV input set to 16:9) using component (the green, blue and red rca connectors) everything was OK. This suggests that my tv's scart AV input port must be defined to accept component before I can get any picture (it was doing it automatically in the case of the KAON scart ->scart setup) . Of course defining the AV input can be done only when one has a remote and a manual, which I don't!

Any advise and tips would be appreciated.

BTW, I am in Perth and none of the local electronics retailing outlets has any idea who might be handling Thomson products after they pulled out of the Australian market. All the leads I was given (Shriro, Prima, etc.) have gotten me nowhere, unfortunatley.

Cheers

Giarth
