kenneth1503559512 Posted June 23, 2004 Posted June 23, 2004 (edited) This is an explanation of why I am putting DBA_ARCHIVE on some topics. After discussions with captainatomic over email and PM'ing, he has informed me that he is stopping all contact with this forum. Why? "Its not just the last few posts about other members correcting me, the last week i have been reading posts that have had smart remarks that kinda pissed me off, but then its like 'hey lets attack captainatomic! week'" So he isn't stopping his deletion of posts and he is " to cut to[o] want to deal with this ****y forum". It's a shame that he is leaving the forum as most of his posts are useful and informative. And Jeremy. I have posted this so that other members can understand why you are on a post deletion "rage". EDIT: I should add, I am stopping the DBA_ARCHIVE thing as it is too time consuming and Jeremy is beating me to some posts of his. EDIT 2: Damn, it looks like he is gone. gclark8 Posted June 23, 2004 Posted June 23, 2004 He is welcome to join me on the bike forum, lots of fun there...
kenneth1503559512 Posted June 24, 2004 Author Posted June 24, 2004 Can't we all just get along?!? That's what I was thinking last night. Guys, captainatomic is a 15 year old and there is a big chance there are other's on this forum younger than 18. I think we need to chill down a bit. Also, maybe add a "I'm only suggesting" line to topics where you are talking to people you know that aren't working in the industry.
ijd Posted June 24, 2004 Posted June 24, 2004 . . . and he is a pretty smart and enthusiastic 15-yr-old. However, one also needs a fairly thick skin if one is going to post opinions on a public forum: There are plenty of snipers just waiting to [anonymously] pounce if they think they can get a laugh! 2i cents, Ian
datvman Posted June 24, 2004 Posted June 24, 2004 Can't we all just get along?!? i hope everyone could its a pity, i actually found his 90 examples of ACT bad broadcasting quite a learning experience. Seeing how bad some pics really were was a surprise

I have noticed that people in the industry can (I'm not saying they always do) have a negative attitude just because they are usually in the "know".
tonymy01 Posted June 24, 2004 Posted June 24, 2004 . . . and he is a pretty smart and enthusiastic 15-yr-old. I have to agree somewhat here. While he needed a little bit of education in terms of certain artifacts in the early days, he was able to pick most of the issues more recently pretty much spot on (dot crawl, cross colouration etc). His mammoth thread on various aspects of Win (well, digital TV in Canberra fullstop!) was certainly well worth reading. Although it seems a bit silly to go deleting everything now.. Regards
Scorchie™ Posted June 24, 2004 Posted June 24, 2004 Tis rather annoying to do so. Realistically, he is entitled to delete his own posts but I would have hoped for the benefit of the DigiTV community as a whole, he would preserve the information. You do need a thick skin. If I deleted posts based on every time someone told me that I was wrong, there'd be no Internet!
John_Barber Posted June 24, 2004 Posted June 24, 2004 I have noticed that people in the industry can (I'm not saying they always do) have a negative attitude just because they are usually in the "know". Look, I too will miss captain atomic's contributions, but I do not think a dummy spit is a very productive reaction to whatever caused him to leave. Deleting his posts is a bit of an over the top "take my bat and ball and go home" reaction. As for the "negative" attitude of "people in the know", well there's a lot of old wives tales, myths and wild conspiracy theories being bandied about. Just look at the discussion about Channel 10's coverage of the Grand Prix and the widescreen vs 4:3 arguments. Channel 10 was being bagged from armhole to breakfast table with mentions of the 16:9 telecasts in the UK. As it turned out it was not Channel 10's fault and the "fault" lay with the host broadcaster (which supplies Ch10). This sort of misinformation can be rather tedious and is probably the main cause of any perceived "negativity". Cheers (positively) JB
steveb1503559504 Posted June 24, 2004 Posted June 24, 2004 John, You are quite true in your analysis of the situation. Even when there were inside people telling the true story in the thread about the F1, the 'informed' pish poshed it and chose to believe their own conspiracy theories. This is just one case, to name them all I would be here all night and most of tomorrow. The industry insiders want to help, but when you have 15 year olds telling you that you don't know what your doing, then you can understand our position. SteveB

John_Barber Posted June 24, 2004 Posted June 24, 2004 I'm 19, and I usually accept the advice of you professionals. No one's infallable, least of all me, and I think we all welcome positive critique, comments and other viewpoints. I do hope captain atomic will reconsider his decision, it will be his loss. As for the young 'uns "versus" jaded old buggers like me there's a saying. At 7, your father knows everything, At 17, your father knows nothing At 27, it's amazing how much your father has learned in the last 10 years! Yup, that was me too! Cheers JB
kenneth1503559512 Posted June 24, 2004 Author Posted June 24, 2004 It's strange, this isn't the only forum where someone has left. A forum I look at (aquaxp.com) has lost (from what I can tell) a member. All his posts say "left" and he is now in the validating users group. It's stranger than captainatomic's leaving as captainatomic has a reason. This person on the other forum doesn't seem to have one.
Santa1503559644 Posted June 26, 2004 Posted June 26, 2004 Good grief! I leave the room for a week, and all hell breaks loose! Half of the value of forums like these are the varied points of view. I, for one, wouldn't hang around too long if the forum "degenerated" into a simple, dry, "yes", "no", "press play on tape" pseudo-FAQ. In order to get enough people on board to help with a range of advice/answers, you need to make it worth their while, in terms of "chewing the fat", "arguing the toss" etc. (Well, thats IMNSHO!) I survived a transmogrification early on, only to become (more annoying)! Well, at least George stayed on, after his threats a while back! On the subject of the Captain, I can't from memory recall any/many particular stunts like those of that a certain (name witheld) drongo who cant spell, shouts, and rarely makes sense. Maybe we need an ITUS/ITYS icon? (Or will do). PS: Was it the captain who did that (quickly deleted) wierd rant about rocking up with a hooker? Even that could be excused! PPS: Regarding "jaded old buggers", {while I'm not sooo old myself(I just appear to be old)}, we certainly need a decent proportion of people who aren't so easily swayed by marketing hype and the race to offload cash faster than they can make it. A few people who, even with bifocals, can clearly identify whether the emperor's in his birthday suit, can make a useful difference.
hab01i Posted June 26, 2004 Posted June 26, 2004 Neighbours eat you heart out !!!!!!!!!!! We have got it all here on the DBA Forums !!!!!!!! LOL
Groover ! Posted June 26, 2004 Posted June 26, 2004 There has been quite a few people who got their noses out of joint on the forum. So Captin what ever his name is not alone.
