long term reference Dynavector XV-1s fitted to the SME 3012-R.  sounds beautifully rich but still dynamic and detailed.

I believe it is a tuning device.

The left bolt is tuned to middle C, while the right is tune slightly higher, to Verdi middle C.

Provides improvements to the full range of recordings.

As long as it was not something mundane like blind threaded holes and a lack of suitable short bolts. Looks an elegant solution though. 👍

Even cold and using an ( albeit a good one!!  )archaic amp and some ( not so good ) speakers SQ is Dynamic detailed and HUGE!!.....even with said  auxiliaries.....

Adding the Karousel and Radikal 2 has given me a whole new system. The slighty "Lazy" quality of the Univector/XV1s has virtually disappeared.

Proof again if needed that source first (espicially the TT proper) rules!!

Nice looking TTs! Since you are running the same cartridge in both,  curious how the turntables compare?

I've never liked the flimsy SME headshells on my 3012R.

Can sometimes be hard to fit a cart too.

I agree.  However,  a few SME experts say the flimsy SME head shell is the best head shell for a 3012-R regardless of price.

Complicated question as the sound-chain is different. For the Project, Yamaha A-S2200 class A/B (in brief I'll introduce a Musical Fidelity MX-VYNL preamp) and Monitor Audio Silver 6. For the Thorens, Parasound Z-phono, Denon PMA-50 (class D) and Klipsch RB 61 II.

Obviously, better sound for the former but...I must say, upgrading cartridge in the Thorens (from TAS257 to ATVM740mL), the increase in quality was exponential (in the meanwhile I tried an Ortofon 2M Red that went back into its box in a week, such a bad cartridge, even the TAS257 -a rebranded, conical, AT3600L sounded much, much better).

Maybe someday I'll put the Thorens in the main setup and judge in a more fair comparison.

Definitely, ATVM740ML is a superb MM cartridge!

Thanks for the response. Interesting about your experience with the Ortofon 2M, it seems to divide opinion.  No arguments from me on your main cartridge  - I agree that the 740ML is great.

Look forward to hearing your comparison if you plug the Thorens into your main rig!

After almost 12 months of waiting due to COVID and a host of other pesky delays I now have my PTP5 Lenco up and almost running. Simon and Ben at Hifi Guru have delivered a fine piece of turntable.

HDF, MDF and a heavy acrylic provide mass and dampening. Kuzma Ref 313 12” and a yet to be setup Helius Orion tonearms. ZYX Ultimate 100 on the Kuzma and probably a Miyajima Spirit mono on the Helius. A Phoenix Eagle and Road Runner set the pace. ZYX CPP1 head amp into  a Music First 632 MM phono stage.

Unfortunately, my SOtM Dac/Pre decided to have issues so I only have the pre in my Topping headphone amp to do Pre duties which is robbing me of hearing the very best of the tt.

Apologies for the pics, the black gloss makes it difficult.

Looking through this thread, there are so many amazing turntables ... not just capable of sounding amazing, but stunning looking as well.

I've literally had three turntables through my life: a Garrard SP-something ... 25, I think, back in the 60's. Then a Lenco GL75 in the 70s. Ironically, it was considered quite average, even mediocre back then ... if you followed what HiFi Answers believed. In the 80s I really wanted a LP12, but was a recent graduate and newly married, and settled on a Thorens TD150. I think it was a Mk2. Not sure which model. It came with a SME 3009 arm, ran a Dynavector 10X (the original in red), and for quite some while I was in love.  I was recommended to upgrade the arm to a Rega RB300, which I did. And that was the state of play until the late 80s, when kids and dogs and family took over.

Several months ago a friend got me interested in my music system again, and I decided to rebuild my old Thorens from the ground up. At that time I had not read this forum, or this thread. Had I done so, I may not have gone "old school" on the turntable. The build and modifications went as well as I could have hoped, and the sound is excellent ... of course, the rest of my system has changed completely as well, but the Thorens/Rega/Supex 900 Mk IV remain at its heart.

Details of the build are here, for those wanting all the details:   http://www.inthewoodshop.com/Furniture/NotReallyFurniture.html

The plinth is fiddleback Jarrah. The armboard is 10mm black acryclic, as is the base board.  Dynamat insulation under the platter. The Rega received mods including Origin Live counterweight and coupling, as well as VTA adjuster. The mat is Herbie's Excellent II. New springs and a whole lot more.

Decoupled sub-table (Jarrah and acryclic), and IsoAcoustic Isopuck feet.

With custom lid ...
